First line up release last year came out in late November. This is a >month early than last year, not counting the "sneak peek" last month. I wonder if we'll see other fests dropping line ups even earlier. (420 fest released their major artists already)
Funny this thread was bumped because for my class today the Conference Programming Manager for SXSW and former Head of Press + Publicity for SX Interactive is speaking to my class today about social media strategies. Should be a fun lecture.
I just realized Modern English is that band that does "i stop the world and melt with you". Their new song sounds nothing like that. It sounds like something that could be produced out in Joshua Tree CA.

Been to this the past two years (without a wristband or badge) and loved it, but unfortunately starting a new job and don't get any vacation in the first year :/ Best I could probably do is come out the Friday through Sunday, and I usually have trouble finding a ton of great stuff on that last Saturday and Sunday

I will probably try and make it out briefly this year and may just hang out in Austin for the most part. Tinnitus has wrecked my future festival plans and I confirmed my ears can't tolerate festival bass levels easily anymore. I have to be much more picky about shows nowadays, but this will be the last year my friend has his house on 7th street before it gets turned into condos. I will see what happens as it gets closer, but can't go as hard as I used to. I will be all about the acoustic sets now.
Don't forget some decent earplugs. I recommend musician quality plugs from an audiologist. They are $200 but sound light years better than any other plugs. I waited too long to get mine, but my ear had issues from diving in my teens that ultimately made my right ear more susceptible to noise damage. Deep bass just resonates my tinnitus regardless of protection and makes it worse for days and possibly permanently.
Also, I will add that Empire Garage's system is insanely loud and probably contributed to my ear issues last year. Jack Garratt totally killed it though, but it was Oscar and the wolf that was too loud for me. Listenening to your ear ringing every night when going to sleep sucks along with the fact that I don't get silence anymore.
Another small batch of artists added. I don't recognize any except for a few local Austin and Philly acts. See below:
There's also this Willie Nelson headlining event out in Spicewood Springs along with Conor Oberst, Margo Price, Parker Milsap Lukas Nelson and more. luckreunion.com/#2017
Location Willie Nelson's Luck, Texas|1100 Bee Creek Rd Spicewood, TX
Everfest's Take Willie Nelson's Luck Reunion brings a day-long lineup of the both up-and-comers and well-known stars in Americana and indie-folk to his "Luck, Texas" ranch each year during SXSW. The night before the musicians hit the stage, a special dinner event is hosted for a limited number of guests at the Old West-themed ranch, and a portion of the proceeds from both events go to charity - in 2015, the SIMS Foundation, which provides mental health services for Austin musicians, and Wholesome Wave, which helps provide affordable access to healthy, locally-grown foods in underserved areas.
Also, first official line up showcase (from what I can tell)

Any locals ever done the Music Wristband? It's $169 and this is what it gets you "Wristbands guarantee no cover charges. Admission subject to legal capacity. Many venues fill up. Badges get priority entry." (https://wristbands.sxsw.com/music/#how)
Don't know if its worth it. Do you get to skip the line with it? Or does it just waive all cover charges? Are cover charges to shows that much? This will be my first south by and I'm not really sure how to approach it.
This year will be a slight disservice to wrist band holders because they expanded badge holder's access.
Before, only Platinum and Music Badges would have first dibs to showcases, then wristband holders, then the public. If you had Gold/Film/Interactive badge, you filed into the public line.
This year, those with G/F/Int badges will be accessed AFTER Music/Platinum, then wristbands, then the public. (This also work for those with Music wanting to attend Interactive/Film and so on)
So before it was: (what Finch already posted)
1) Plat/Music
2) Music Wristband
3) Public + Other Badges
Now it is: 1) Plat/Music
2) Other Badges
3) Music Wristband
4) Public
5) Sneak, Lie, Bribe your way in.
Granted, most interactive and film folks are there for business and flyout by the time music is really ramped up so I don't it will be a HUGE uptick in attendance.
When do they cut of sales for the wristband? I'm not sure how involved I'll be. There are only a handful of acts I really want to see so idk if I should get the wristband. There will also be one day (tbd when) that'll I'll be tied all day doing a SXSW workshop for work, so that day will likely a loss as far as what I see music wise.
I'm just really undecided if I'm going to attended SXSW the way a real attendee would or if I'll just try my luck at seeing Autre Ne Veurb& Minus the Bear. Is it worth it to go all week?

By the time the full schedule drops, there will be so many new bands you may want to check out, the wristband is well worth it. IF, by the time SXSW happens, and you TRUELY only want to see those 2 bands, no wristband. They will prob play 8-10 shows each(cause its SXSW), and you can catch them at one of those.
I have friends that come every year to SXSW, and spend NO $$$ towards the fest.....
They go to ALL the free day parties(RSVP, free food and drink sometimes, same bands there are at night), then go to local bars at night, with unofficial SXSW stuff(free)..............
Thank you! You've been amazingly helpful! We'll see if I end up getting a wristband or not. I'll be doing nearly every show by myself, so it really just depends if I want to go every day (or most days) or just cherry pick who and when and take my chances. Hopefully the wristbands are up for a while tho so I can decide sorta last minute.
