Thursday: Hotel Vegas (Levitation showcase) Meatbodies (killed it, DO NOT SLEEP on them) Wand (good show but was expecting older songs, played mostly new songs, which were really interesting) Death Valley Girls (crushing hard on the bassist and drummer. They rocked. 10/10) Tim Darcy (boring, depressing, good show, not my style tho) Mint Field (big discovery for me. Super cute Hispanic girls doing psych rock.) Emo's (Eno's) Spoon (great show as usual, plus they filmed the video for Hot Thoughts at same gig) Hamilton Leithauser (surprisingly awesome) Sweet Spirit (one of my fav austin bands, played a good show but seemed nervous for some reason)
Friday: Barracuda (Chronicle showcase) Black Lips (fun show, was cut short, dig the new stuff a lot and love the addition of sax) Think No Think (really cool, would see again anytime.) Creepoid (another Austin band that knows how to do psych rock right) Coppertank (YouTube showcase) Migos (was good but I was so wasted that I barely remember a minute of it. Video proved it was good tho.) Lil Yachty (was also good and was wearing an epic Chicago Cubs throwback) they had free mixed drinks and pork slider and pork bao so u know it was lit. Downed 11 drinks in an hour and didn't end up on a stretcher. Really proud of that. Empire (Mazda/Spin showcase) missed Mastodon and that bothered me but who cares, seeing them on tour next month where they'll play 3x as long. Got in for Show Me The Body who was a pleasant surprise. Moshed with LIZZO (she hugged me) and had an awesome time. Homes had an electric banjo and was playing heavy thrash in like drop C on that shit. Wtf. So cool.
Saturday: Emo's (Ham on Everything showcase) Denzel Curry (one of the best rap shows I've seen. Dude was on point. Such a great performer. Crowd was fun. Got sound cut but still finished Ultimate, yelling acapella in the crowd. Xavier Wulf (been a fan for years and finally saw live. Didn't disappoint.) IDONTKNOWJEFFERY (was cool but literally had no idea who he was.) 24hrs (super crunk and had an apparent YouTube famous 11 year old Asian girl throwing stacks of cash into the crowd.) Smokepurrp (was cool too I guess.) 800 Congress (Bud Light showcase) Roots Superjam (was my main event and HAD to make this. Last year they were a great experience and this year topped that. Redman & Method Man were a bucket list for me. TI always shows up to SXSW shows I go to and crushes. Brandy was an interesting surprise. Rae Sremmurd were cool. Jidenna was cool. Shakey Graves was awesome. The Roots superjam at SXSW is now a tradition for me.)
Ended up at Mohawk somehow and saw Yachty for a third time and it was a great show. Moshed out, etc. people hate on this dude for no reason. He's got nothing hateable about him. I do regret seeing him so many times tho. There's some shows I wish I had gone to but missed. Whatever. I still had fun abd had the best SXSW of the 9 I've done.
Rumor is that next year we may no longer have separate festivals but all one mashed up badge system.
i got some of that on video also. So next year it's just 1 or 2 badges for everything? Big if true.
Yeah there was Houston newspaper/website that interviewed someone from SX about making it less confusing and that a single badge may be in the works. Im trying to find it.
