just wanna tell you to check your expectations on Griz this time around. I have seen him like 5 times and enjoyed it each time UNTIL the last show (NYC on NYE.) It blew, never touched his sax and just sounded like some of the most generic, awful womb womb edm I've ever witnessed in person. I hope he doesn't make a habit of that and you enjoy yourself. I am just letting you know so that you aren't blind sided like I was.
We saw him a month or so before at Mardi Grad World and it was fantastic. He was with Muzzy and it was mostly live rather than just dj'ing. Didn't he do another show on NYE and fly up there for a second? I could have sworn I read that somewhere. I've seen him probably 9 times and they were all great, but definitely thanks for the warning.
I'm sure you saw the guy telling me why it was so different just before you responded, so there shouldn't be too much reason to worry. And, yes, I'm pretty sure he performed elsewhere and then flew to nyc for the second show ( I don't think he started until like 4a.m.) I went because my friends insisted and it was at Webster Hall. I'm just happy I didn't pay the ridiculous amount they wanted for the tix
I'm hearing GRiZ will be doing the Joy after show on Friday. Only way I possibly don't go is if Tycho or RTJ end up at Republic.

You missed some really great events while in New York.

Yeah he played in Asheville earlier on NYE and flew up for the late night DJ set.

I just got drug to the griz nonsense. I went to the Hot Chip/Crystal Castels/Justice show and that was amazing. Also, the main show I cared about going to on NYE was the AnCo DJ show with Deakin and Avey. That show was really cool. I didn't really worry too much about shows outside of those two. I also had a bunch of friends that went to the Phish shows, but they don't appeal to me (especially for $85)

I was considering the Justice show, but passed since I heard from a few people the venue wasn't great.
Also going on that week was Bonobo DJ set, Recondite, RPR Soundsystem/Zip/Ion Ludwig, Dixon b2b Solomun and Maya Jane Coles. Had looots of fun.
They announced a few more late night shows which only leaves Republic Saturday open. I like Sunsquabi, and I like Muzzy Bear. But I'm not sure if I'd pay to go see a GRiZ DJ set. I'll wait to see what my other options are for Friday.
No. It looks like they went with Griz DJ set and Subsquabi. That's a good enough show in itself, but I would rather have seen separate shows by RTJ since it's only a DJ set by Griz. I haven't decided yet if I'm going, but I have Gramatik tickets for the night after so I'll be at that for sure. Here's to hoping some of the other rap like Young Thug and some of the EDM like Ganja White Night helps fill in the gaps. Like I said, Tycho, RTJ and Grizmatik make it worth the money to me. If Deadmau5 Hau5 music doesn't annoy me, that's also a potential plus.
Schedule is out on the app. Kinda weird flow for me, but I'll figure it out. I'm looking at:
Friday:
Roar! - 3:00pm Main Kaiydo - 4:15 Ballroom San Holo - 4;:45 Float Den Car Seat Headeest - 5:15 Ballroom TroyBoi - 6:00 Float Den (some of Young Thug) Opiou - 6:30 Ballroom Thundercat - 7:30 Ballroom (suck conflict for Grizmatik) Grizmatik - 7:45 Power Plant Sleigh Bells - 9:00 Ballroom Big Wild - 10:45 Ballroom Leave for Sunsquabi and GRiZ DJ or maybe some Lil Dickie
Saturday Minnesota b2b Space Jesus - 3:15 Float Den Soul Sister - 4:15 Riverboat Rezz - 4:45 Float Den Tycho - 6:15 Power Plant Ghastly b2b Herobust - 7:15 Float Den Washed Out - 7:30 Ballroom Run the Jewels - 8:00 Main Vince Staples - 9:00 Ballroom The Floozies - 10:45 Ballroom Ganja White Night - 11 Riverboat Leave for Gramatik or some of 21 Savage
Worst conflict for me is Thundercat and Grizmatik. I love Thundercat. He was Top 5 for me, but I haven't seen Grizmatik. So I'll see him again next time. I also haven't scheduled either of the headliners. I have gaps enough to see a few minutes of Deadmau5 and Travis Scott. But idgaf about either.
I am so glad that I am not going... Two of the four bands that I would want to see are conflicting. I am sad that there is no RTJ late night show though.

I hear you. I'm so glad that I am going, particularly with that Saturday evening run of Tycho > Ghastly/Herobust > Washed Out > Run the Jewels > Vince Staples > Floozies > Gramatik aftershow. That's a bad ass day. Friday is a bit more sparse for me, but Opiou > Grizmatik > Sleigh Bells > Big Wild should be great too.
I am pretty broke since buying the house and doing all the stuff to it. We still are living without a stove and need to get it hooked up, so I guess it is good that there was really nobody I wanted to see and that RTJ isn't doing that late night show. At least that is what I keep telling myself.
I'll be at Gramatik after party on Saturday night, but mau5trap presents Dead Mow Cinco at The Republic with Rezz, Attlas and No Mana. That's probably the smallest venue he's played at, so that's pretty good for them.
Also Washed Out had to cancel, so they are adding Sunsquabi Saturday 5:15 and Yeasayer Saturday at 7:30. Washed Out was on my schedule, but I'll take the Sunsquabi trade off. So I'll do the Sunsquabi > Tycho > ghastly b2b Herobust > Run the Jewels > Vince Staples > Floozies > Gramatik run on Saturday. That turned into a pretty great day.
F the world. We just saw Zoogma mix some Mississippi Delta Blues with EDM. Very few (have survived a the spice) can pull that off. It's gonna be a great weekend.
A wild Day 1 is in the books. Some idiot jumped into the river and got rescued but c'mon man. It was glass after glass of old forester, not my whiskey of choice but...
I think we saw a little of almost every set. Some of the best music was under the culture tent with a pop up band fronted by a dude playing some type of sitar (African bass harp?). Very nice. Day went like this:
Roar! Opened the day with their typical sounds. I'm pretty sure Carly was drunk off her ass. They aren't the greatest, but they're fun. Next we walked over to a few minutes of k?d. This was to be his first festival appearance. It seemed pretty generic to me. Next was a few minutes of Kaiydo, a 20 year old rapper on his first tour. He was putting out some effort so I appreciated that. We also caught a couple of minutes of Lido. Think a slightly more chilled percussion and EDM sound than Robert Delong. We went to San Holo. Things were obviously moving into higher gear. While certainly decent, I expected and wanted a little bit more. Next was a disappointing walk into the ballroom for Car Seat Headrest. I wanted this to be a lot better since I love guitars. It was kind of a somber set, and they hit some bad notes and off tune vocals.
Next we went to TroyBoi. This was on another level than anything we had seen up to that point. He wasn't afraid to come out from his boards and interact with the fans. He played a lot of trap. The set was definitely fun, and I'll catch him again at a festival sometime.
We were supposed to split the Troy set with Young Thug, but he wasn't able to get to town. So they brought out Juvenile. That was pretty ratchet as you might expect. Haha. Project Bitch, Back that Ass Up and Slow Motion were all great along the river. Unfortunately with this reschedule, I missed all of Opiuo. More than one person chastised me for missing that, and it was on my schedule. Sometimes shit happens. I did get over for a few minutes of Thundercat which was nice to see him play again.
Next was Grizmatik. This version was GRiZ, Gramatik and Muzzy Bear. It was kind of a little odd to me that they played so much down tempo/low temp shit. But then they would break out the mind warping crazy. I think that set goes down as historic for the younger generations. That's a very rare act for here, and it was very good. Light work was great and featured more gels than screens. They played some GRiZ, Gramatik, Grizmatik and a few covers including a 15-20 minute riff on Superstition and Funky Town.
Following Grizmatik was my favorite show of the night, Sleigh Bells. Their stage was about 8 double slacks of Marshall Amps. It was loud and high energy. I don't generally listen to thrm, but they don't usually disappoint live. Super fun if somewhat under appreciated.
After Sleigh Bels we went back to the Power Plant stage for Travis Scott. I didn't really care about seeing him after the Day 4 Night set. But he blew that shit away this set. He brought more energy than the crowd did, and even though he overuses voice tuners, he was keyed in for this set. This was a redemption as he ascends to headliner status. I still wish he'd drop the voice tuning though.
Next was Big Wild and exactly what you expect from him on the boards and percussion playing remixes like he is known to do. Fun for sure. Next we went by Lil Yachty. I had Ekali on my schedule but didn't feel like going back on the boat since I had found everyone at that point. Surprisingly Yachty wasn't all that terrible. His DJ was decent, so all he had to do was not completely suck. I guess I'm saying that yeah, Yachty sucks, but it could have been way worse. Finally we went by a few minutes of Zeds Dead who were way more turnt up than any of their recent material I have heard. I had planned on skipping this completely, so it was a good surprise. I later heard after their Republic set after party they went to the Joy and did a b2b2b with Griz and jauz. I heard after last night they played the Dragons Den. Lots of sets for them this weekend. Also Lil Dicky was going on at the same time, so we stopped over there for a couple of songs. Decent.
All in all a fun day 1, with Grizmatik taking the day and Sleigh Bells being a sentimental favorite of mine. Grounds were great, heat was low, ice was melting fast in my triple whiskeys and the weather was good. Two food items to note: 1) they had these locally made frozen coffee ice cream bars in mocha and cafe au lait flavors that were bomb as shit. Each was about a cup of coffee worth of caffeine. 2) Umami Bites out of Ohio had these spectacular stuffed fried wontons. We had a pork belly one early than this outrageous bulgogi one topped with pickled onions and a balsamic reduction which I went back for twice since it was the best thing I've eaten this year.
RTJ and Tycho today along with late night Gramatik should be a blast. Friday was a solid B with some A moments, but I was always looking more forward to today. My feet hurt like a mf which I guess means I was a dancin fool. Hahaha.
Day 2 was awesome. I started out at Minnesota b2b Space Jesus. That was a crazy set alternating between rap, trap, drum and bass and heavy beats. They mixed in some Afroman as well as Still Tippin. Then I went back to the boat to pay my respects to Soul Sister. I caught about 3 deep groove/funk cuts. After that, I walked out to see some of Alina Baraz's set. She was a singer with a 3 piece band. The music was pretty good, and she was talented. It was mostly chill with her swaying gently while she sang. It seemed to me like it was Sade influenced. She'll probably go somewhere. After that, we stopped by a few minutes of Rezz. It was okay in parts, and it does have an edge, but it was a little too house for me.
Next I went to the Ballroom and saw Sunsquabi. I knew this would be a highlight, and they didn't disappoint. It was pretty straight forward jamtronica. The crowd was into it. Immediately after that, I waked to the main stage to see Tycho. This was my 4th time seeing them and by far the best. It's like they even got markedly better than when we saw them in December at D4N. Almost everyone I talked to was calling it the show of the weekend with others suggesting it was an all time level show. It's the best set I've seen probably since Claypool Lennon in October.
Next we walked over to Ghastly b2b Herobust. It was an okay set but much better when Herobust was leading. They called it getting Ghostbusted. I was able to catch a couple of Yeasayer songs on the way to Run the Jewels. Run the Jewels was as good as expected. I've seen them 4 times now, and you generally know what you're going to get from them. They were in a good mood. Next set was Vince Staples. Vince was great. He didn't preach or talk that much as he is sometimes known to do. This was a quality set. We watched a few minutes of Deadmau5. It sounded okay, and the light show was good, but I don't really like house/rave music that much so I didn't pay that much attention.
Next we went to Suicide Boys. That show was packed. A lot of people knew his/their songs so I guess they have a following but they were new to me. I read that even though they are from here, this was their first local show. Think trap on meth, might be some sarcasm involved. We also caught a few minutes of The Floozies who were The Floozies. Finally we caught a few minutes of Zhu and 21 Savage on the way out. I don't much like Zhu's music, but I respect him for who he is. 21 Savage was kind of wimpy which was not what I expected. We left and went to Space Jesus, Ganja White Night and Gramatik until about 5 this morning. Gramatik was awesome, and Ganja White Night was entertaining. That's the first time I saw that act.
A+ day with that Tycho set. Overall this was a much stronger Buku than it looked like it would be on paper. They don't ever disappoint at that festival. Most everything was well run as usual, and we got in some quality sets. Best shows were:
Young Thug didn't show? What a shocking development.
No. He didn't show citing a "personal emergency." I guess it's expected, but there were people dressed as him (from the last album cover), so apparently he has appeal out there. I planned to split 45 minutes of his and TroyBoi's sets before Opiuo, so going to Juvenile ended up fucking that up for me. But I was okay with it because I like Juvenile better over the limited listens I'd given to Young Thug anyway. I still would have liked to have passed by and see if he was any good live.
Consensus among the brood was GrizMatiK, Tycho and RTJ. Funny those were all second wave and also my 3 most looked forward to shows even if RTJ was standard RTJ to me.

Good running into Damoss and cheesedickordie as always.
Super random at this point, but you weren't on the VIP boat holding a Run the Jewels banner during their set were you? If you were I saw you on the snapchat, but the video quality wasn't good so I could be completely wrong.
