Kind of disappointing to see them book such a great hip-hop lineup only to have Sunday, the weakest day for that genre, sell out. I'll never understand the devotion people have for RHCP.

It's not even devotion of people who grew up on mother's milk and blood sugar sex magic, it's kids who like all the garbage newer stuff. Weird

Is the RHCP fandom really that surprising? They created a fuckton of radiohits during the second John Fruscianti era that people can easily sing along with.

Most people in their 20's love Californication, By the Way, and Stadium Arcadium. Everyone my age grew up with Cali/Otherside/ScarTissue/ByTheWay/Snow/TellMeBaby. I don't think anyone cares about I'm With You or Getaway.
I get everyone has their own taste but it's not like it's tough to understand why people love them. They have insanely recognizable and catchy songs and riffs and have been around for 3 decades.

This is inaccurate. I'm not even that big of a fan, but John Frusciante-era RHCP gets a pass.
Dammit, I've had a family quasi-emergency and can't go. If anybody in the DC metro area wants a great deal on two wristbands that have been upgraded to VIP, send me a message!

I get why people like them, I'm just saying I personally don't get the appeal. 3/4 of the band are extremely talented, but Kiedis ruins it for me. I'm sure they still get a shitload of play on whatever is left of the radio and they're an easy, accessible rock band for people to get into. I think Nick Cave summed it them up best for me.

People who were into Californication in high school are now in their early/mid 30's. I think they just somehow stayed relevant to kids even as the years went on. Not surprised the VIP sold out for Sun as that is likely RHCP oldsters not wanting to deal with the mess.
EDIT: Is Sun sold out? You can still buy both GA and VIP tickets on the site.

Never liked RHCP to be honest. I always recognized that Frusciante and Flea are extremely talented. I also respect that they basically have established a sound that everybody recognizes as being theirs and hasnt really been duplicated. But its just not really my thing.

True and, as mentioned earlier, their hits on Stadium Arcadium and By The Way brought in people my age (early to mid 20s) as teens. I remember loving them for a brief moment when Stadium Arcadium came out. I guess I'm just surprised by how many people my age still love them because of those songs.
I'm only going on Saturday, but I'm curious about the age breakup of their crowd against the other two headliners. I'd imagine Gorillaz pull the youngest crowd, but at my last job I worked with two early twenty-somethings only a few years younger than me and they had no idea who Gorillaz were but definitely knew RHCP. I was pretty shocked that they didn't even recognize Feel Good Inc.

I assume that mainstream music festivals, for the most part, cater to a 16-25 crowd. After age 25, there are still people that go but they're the ones standing in the back and showing up at 5pm to only see a few headliners. Gorillaz popularity seemed to peak in 2005 which means, if you're 25 now, you would barely remember them so I'm not sure if they'll be pulling in the youngest crowd but who knows. What I DO know is that the sets I plan to attend (RHCP, Weezer, Foster The People, Tegan and Sara, Marian Hill, Two Door Cinema Club, Milky Chance, Circa Waves, Broken Social Scene, Broods, Sleigh Bells, Sky Ferreira) will likely be the sparsely attended ones with the exception of RHCP, Foster and (maybe) Weezer.

Nonsense! RHCP albums ranked (worst to best): selt-titled, Freaky Styley, Uplift Mofo Party Plan, I'm With You, One Hot Minute, The Getaway, Stadium Arcadium, Mother's Milk, By The Way, Californication, Blood Sugar Sex Magik

Wonder what that 16-25 demographic will choose between Gorillaz and MIA... curious to see how much of a fanbase the latter can still attract.

I really don't think the Gorillaz pull a large 16-25 mainstream crowd in 2017. They've taken on more of a cool-kids indie darling feel lately.
I have no idea what all the kids are going to do Saturday night. They'll just wander around after Future until they hear sounds and lights that they like.

Ah, I made my comment without looking at the schedule. I just figured there would be some diarrhea-sounding DJ on at the same time as the Gorillaz. I suppose the youngsters will choose Gorillaz over M.I.A.

Weezer will have a healthy crowd. All of those other bands aren't even in the same universe of popularity as Weezer and they packed the field at Boston Calling earlier this year.

Which makes the conflict even worse. I'm thinking I might just say fuck it and see all of TV on the Radio, the first fifteen of MIA and just settle for a shitty spot for Gorillaz. Gorillaz will have a big crowd, but I'd imagine less than what they'd have in say 2010.
On the reddit page someone took photos of the set up from the train: imgur.com/gallery/ebeVx
Good News: The VIP section of the main stage really cuts in more than I expected and will allow for some good viewing. TY Everfest.
Bad News: No Turf, just a whole lotta parking lot
Lol how can you tell anything from those? Also, did we really expect AstroTurf to be put out? So other festivals actually do that because it seems like a ridiculous idea
Just trying one last time--I'm stuck in Rockville Maryland with two wristbands. If anyone in the DMV wants a great deal and a last-minute trip, send me a message.

People are pretty outraged. Apparently they've been handing out hundreds/thousands of free tickets at Yankees Game and NYU - like just handing out the wristbands like candy.
I gotta be honest as someone who paid full price that feels like a bit of slight. Why would anyone buy from Meadows for this ever again.
Stuffing the place with casual people who just were handed tickets might not create the best atmosphere.
I mean idk anyone that is using the Everfest deal for this fest is getting a pretty comparable deal, the fest giving out free stuff to help market it more and make people want to go. Im not gonna complaint that other people get to also enjoy a deal that is as sweet as the one that i got.
