“DUB DOWN BABYLON” BY DUSTAN LOUQUE, FEATURING NELS CLINE (WILCO) AND LOCAL LUMINARIES
Dustan Louque, a musician/impresario from St. James Parish, will make his directorial debut at the Music Box Village with his favorite musicians blending folk, dub and noise music. “The scene is set in post-apocalyptic New Orleans. After centuries of degrading the planet, humans destroyed nearly all life on earth and have fled to inhabit and deplete other planets. On this night in New Orleans, the survivors commune to regenerate through sound and movement.”
The eclectic list of musicians include Nels Cline (Wilco), Josh Werner (Lee “Scratch” Perry), Margaret Hebert (Classical Pianist), Rob Cambre (New Orleans Prophet of Noise), Eric Heigle (Arcade Fire, Lost Bayou Ramblers). More special guests will be announced soon.
That's fucking crazy. I wanted to go to the one that Stanton Moore and Mike Dillon are hosting on Thursday, but it's 6:00 and I'll still be at JF for another hour or so. I'm never on that end of town and have been wanting to hit the village forever. Wilco played it when it was still a mobile village in City Park. Now that it has its permanent home, I'm going to go there sometime this year. About 2 or 3 pages back are a few videos describing what that place is. It's literally fucking insane that anyone even came up with that concept.
Oh and I'm telling you there are a shit ton of shows still to be announced.
Amazing.
Was it you who mentioned that Tipatina's still hasnt announced their late shows? Do you know what type of acts they've had in the past?
I Don't think it was me on that though they may have more to announce. Joy hasn't announced their late shows for Weekend 1 (have 2 am New Mastersounds shows the second weekend, and I'll be at Saturday's)
Edit looks Like they have them all but 2nd Saturday.
More shows are out and the Grids at jazzfestgrids.com are starting to fill out. Red Barat has added a Monday show now per Backbeat Foundation email.
Many of the smaller clubs like Banks Street Bar and Chickie Wah Wah are filling in. Of note for recent additions:
Egg Yolk Jubilee - Banks Street Bar first Friday @ 10:00pm
Peter Tosh Tribute - Carver Theater first Sunday @ 9: (Featuring Cyrille Neville, Oman Neville, Zak Starkey of The Who, and Oasis, Nicky Glaspie, Brady Blade, Chris Mule and More
MidNite Madness @ Chickie Wah Wah first Saturday and Sunday at 11:59pm Sat - James Singleton, Skerik, Johnny Vidacovich, Jonathan Freliich Sun - James Singleton, Mike Dillon, Will Bernard, Aurora Neeland
Midnight Preserves I think went on sale this past Tuesday for Preservation Hall
James Singleton's Annual Jazz Fest Orchestra @ Zeitgeist first Friday
Mike Dillon with Jean Paul Glaster of Clutch and Claude of Ween @ Siberia Tuesday 2nd week
Huge week ahead for everyone going! I might catch the Thursday night Manic Focus set to start the week off, but I'm not sure yet. Also, Break Science Live Band set on Saturday is a 1:30-3:00am set. So it's pretty likely I'm going to be able to see STS9 (electric) and head to the after-party late night show at Howlin' Wolf.
Also, it was good to catch a couple of hours of Trey Anastasio Band streaming from Sweetwater Fest in Atlanta on Friday. This means I can spend a few extra minutes at Nas on Friday.
Here are two decent links from this morning's Times Picayune. One is the schedule of food demonstrations, and the other is the food writers' recommendations heading into Weekend 1. They'll resample everything in Weekend 1 and put out revisions for Weekend 2 after seeing if anything has changed or improved. Apparently there aren't many new dishes this year which is fine with me.
Anyone else going to the Foundation of Funk show at Republic next Thursday? What time do you think it will end? Trying to decide on getting a hotel room that night or just driving home.

No. But Republic can go til 4 or 5. I doubt that show will, but figure 90-120 minutes from whenever they come on. Looks like show at 9 so 12/12:30 looks reasonable. Hitting the J5/Blackalicious down the block. Hit me up if you step out for a cigarette.

Will do! You going to be at the fest that day? Also jealous of that J5 show, was listening to them earlier today and have never gotten to see them.
Yeah me either. I have been wanting to see Gift of Gab, preferably solo, but I'll easily take Blackalicious with J5. I am going to JF that Thursday as well.
sswright, I don't think Break Science Live will sell out. They packed Blue Nile last year, but Howlin Wolf is bigger. I'm risking it too and will buy at the door.

I have an extra STS9 two day pass for sale as well for under face value, if anyone is interested I can meet around the venue! we are staying at wyndham garden barone plaza
I'll be at the Wyclef jam tomorrow night. $75 for VIP and all the crazy access/free food and drinks was too much to pass up on. Plus, Usher and the Roots will apparently be sitting in.
Day 1 was pretty chaotic and awesome too. We got there around 2 and wandered. I got a bowl of meaty white beans which were delicious. Then I got the crabmeat stuffed shrimp which was even better. We walked over and watched some of Trumpet Mafia and then James Andrews. Next we went and watched the whole Kermit Ruffins and the BBQ Swingers. Kermit was great as always and worked a smoking reference into every song. Hahaha. Next we posted up for Trey Band. They were as sweet as ever. We planned on going to that for about 45 minutes, hitting Nas with Soul Rebels for 45 and catching the end of Trey. Nas and Soul Rebels was killer. Nas went all the way back to Illmatic and even an old cassette tape rap or two. Pure greatness. So we walk back to Trey but it was over like 15/20 minutes early. Not sure what happened with that.
On the way out, I got a DiMartino's Roast Beef Poboy which was great as expected and also had a chance to try the Cuban Ropa Vieja which was also very tasty.
We came home to recharge before moe. I felt guilty because they were in town doing a 3 night run, and I wanted to go to all of the shows. So I had to get a night in (was night 2). It was pretty incredible and as good as anything else I've seen this year. Turkuaz was good too, and the show ended with all of Turkuaz and moe. up on stage. Awesome shit. I'm laying low until tonight. STS9 electric should be the show of the weekend, but last night will be hard to top.

Saw dumpstaphunk last night that 12 year old phenom guitar player taz sat in and that was pretty amazing. Any idea when the joy box office opens to her will call tickets for sts9?
Yeah. 7 they said in the email. Look for the stumbling old guy with the grey cap and blue bill (Pelicans with an N on the front) and I'll buy you a drink. At a crawfish boil. \m/

Phew. Sts9. Just thanks.
That was indeed a pretty good show. We had a ball though that was as packed as I've seen The Joy in a while. I lost my fn hat though and have no idea how that is even possible. We went over to Break Science Live band afterwards, but we didn't get there until about 2 and the door was stil 35. So we just hung out outside dancing in the streets. It sounded great. Can't wait for Axe the Cables 2 sets tonight. I need a bit more sleep though.
My middle kid who is a giant Tribe fan said it's Top 1- [tm] Tribe show. Had they busted out Baraka, this show was probably Top 5 for me in 50 years. As it was, bad ass as a mf.

Thanks for the video clip. I was going to bed early and was like "oh hey what is this".

For sure, and I hoped it wasn't too late. The show was really incredible. Offbeat did a short review of it with photos and the set list.
