The best time I ever had at bonnaroo was during what I thought was the worst lineup I'd seen in my time going. It allowed me to check out artists I might not have listened to and it was way more relaxed because I wasn't constantly checking the time.
2016 still had (and this is obviously subjective to my tastes) - Tame Impala, Father John Misty, LCD Soundsystem, Miguel, Vince Staples, Blood Orange, Dead and Company, M83, Kamasi Washington, Jason Isbell, Tyler the Creator, Ween, Vulfpeck, Claypool Lennon Delirium, and Lizzo.
I thought 2016 was bad and didn't go. But to me this year's lineup doesn't come close to topping that.
Two sets from Bon Iver is probably the most interesting undercard thing they’ve had in years, plus Anderson Paak is potentially about to blow up and so far hasn’t done a ton of fests. But that’s basically it for noteworthy stuff on here. If I rank ordered all of the last 3 top 4s these headliners would all be in the bottom.
On a personal level, even though the Bon Iver booking is really cool, we’re two years into his album cycle and I’ve managed to already see full band and acoustic shows from him in the last year. Plus I can’t help thinking that back in the old days Bonnaroo would have shaped a lineup around a booking like this and loaded up on the type of stuff Justin Vernon books at Eaix Claires instead of having the bottom half of this lineup filled with corporate sponsored nobodies. And on a very spoiled note, as cool as Paak is, whatever he does probably won’t top the set I saw him play with Kendrick and Dr Dre at Coachella.
Yep, my jadedness comes from a place of privilege as well. I saw Bon Iver last year at Coachella, so despite how great of a booking that is it's still consistent with the Bonnaroo habit of getting the good stuff a year late.
I understand that's not the case for most people though and I give them credit for doing some more interesting things this year. But that's one of very few gems, and the overall lineup is still such a downgrade from years prior to 2016.
Just a reminder, no one cares that you don’t like the lineup. If you don’t like it. Don’t go. Simple as that. Trying to appease everyone is what brought their sales down a few years ago. They no longer give a fuck about their older, heady crowd cause you guys are going to fests less and less, regardless of lineup. They are trying to bring younger returning customers. It’s pretttu simple
Can't we all just have fun looking up the undercard that we have no idea about. Finding what we love and listening to it for the next 5 months to jam out to a band we just found out about or a oldie we have always loved. Lets have fun at our camp and eat all the food and go home for the weekend.

Yup. LiveNation doesn’t care if you want a unique curated experience. They’re just here to sell tickets and market their own acts. And based on the last two years they’re doing a bang up job!*

I actually go to more fests now.
Exactly. The claim that older crowds don't go to more fests is horse shit. I have more money now, so I'm going to more fests. I'm just gonna go to fests that book good lineups.

I spent Thursday of 15 in the medical tent watching my friend get her foot fixed, rolled her ankle in the fountain and it was like a purple potato. During this time, I saw multiple kids losing their shit and also had a nice chat with the helicopter pilot who was a pretty chill guy to be under so much pressure. There was a pregnant woman who had to be air lifted out because she broke her leg, and everyone was discussing how difficult it would be to move her via airlift without sedation.
I am pretty sure that 4 or 5 hour set in the medical tent will beat whatever they put together for Thursday 2018.

I get the "were getting old, music changes" thing, but nowadays it is literally just the same artist every festival that is close to an actual human population will have.
Those headliners would have been a lot cooler 6-10 years ago. Otherwise, I think there’s actually a lot to work with and discover on the undercard. It’ll work for me.
Didn't some guy on reddit say that we could lynch him if Arctic Monkeys arent on the poster? Not down with lynching, but we should def tar, feather, and paddle him.

If you’ve come to accept that Bonnaroo will never be what it was, this is a pretty decent lineup, if you haven’t you’re only gonna continue to be dissapointed. That’s really all it boils down to. Probably not going, but for those who do I hope y’all have a great time.

I still remember when I started lurking on this site in 2008. Everyone was complaining so much I wondered if this site was pro or anti Bonnaroo. Realized later it was mostly just tough love for the festival. This thread, as bad as it gets at times, is one of my favorite things each year.
After looking at it a few more times, I’m torn between “I really, really want to try and like this festival and this lineup is somehow better than I expected” and “Don’t be an idiot and financially support this.”
