upstairs, kind of above where the robot exhibit was. i caught the end of some kind of performance there that was really rad. it was a video of some types of indigenous peoples dancing/chanting/singing. Candles and incense and whatnot were burning. I thought it was just a movie but afterwards some guy stood up from a control panel of some kind and bowed and said the next performance was at 9:40pm and everyone clapped. not sure what he was doing.
7. of Montreal - The Past Is A Grotesque Animal was the best song of the weekend.
I second this! Forgot to mention them in my favorite shows, but damn their set was a bunch of fun. They played Hissing Fauna in its entirety for anyone who missed it/didn't realize.
Nice! That song is always amazing live. They used to rarely play it. It wasn't until like my 7th show or so at Bonnaroo '09 that I caught it. Was definitely the highlight of that epic Roo for me, especially since them playing there was what got me to pull the trigger on going in the first place (and Mars Volta / NIN). They completely destroyed all of their equipment. I had never seen a band do anything like that before. Getting all the feedback and sounds from destroying it and playing the instruments until there was nothing left...wow. Kevin and James Husband had to get IV fluids after the show they got so dehydrated.
Would def be cool to catch Hissing Fauna all the way through. I saw them in Pensacola Thursday night before D4N and they blew me away, as usual.
This smaller band is very tight and the small changes to the Hissing Fauna arrangements were awesome at the show I caught. In particular, the bass lines on Gronlandic Edit going towards the four part vocal harmony.
Faberge Falls for Shuggie was also extra badass this go around.
If you are a fan of Hissing Fauna, def check out Icons Abstract Thee, it is an EP that is the fourth side of the vinyl of Hissing Fauna. The best song on the album is on it, imo, No Conclusion.
Anyways yea, the other takeaways from this tour that y'all didn't get were the Paralytic Stalks songs, We Will Commit Wolf Murder and Dour Percentage. I wasn't into that album much when it dropped but they really blew me away. Wolf Murder in the context of Kevin's trans stage persona was very fitting.
Glad y'all had a blast at D4N, I'd been keeping up with this thread throughout the weekend, sounded like a blast, will def try to go back next year.
That jacket is badass btw

of montreal > perfume genius was a fucking great idea.
How was St Vincent? I'm disappointed to hear she's not touring with a band.
she was as good as usual. she sounded great, looked perfect and the visuals were super cool.
Seconded. I literally just stared at her and the screens and watched. You could sing along with the songs you knew (she played a couple of older songs and then did the entire new album I believe), but I just chose to watch. I rarely ever just watch a show. I'm usually more involved as an audience member in singing, dancing, bobbing, call and responsing or whatever. But this was just kind of watch and take it in. There were actually several other shows of different genres at D4N that fit in with that general theme (GY!BE, The Album Leaf, Forest Swords, etc. - maybe even much of the Thom Yorke set) that were being performed I think for the listener to take in and internalize.
But she was great. I had no qualms about only catching the first 15 minutes of Justice even though people here say it was a highlight show. Maybe if I had seen St. Vincent before, it would have been more of an equitable split. But I really wanted to see her perform.
LOL. It's too early. What would it even be called, "Day for Night Where all of your coolest and most interesting friends are going to be in the middle of December!"?

Not his Ship audio installation, because that thing was a joke.

Damn that's disappointing to hear. I hadn't looked at anything about it after III Points happened. I forgot to mention Sheer Mag should play in the same slot as Priests cause that was phenomenal. My new turn ons after this festival are tight blue dresses and any group of three powerful black women after seeing En Vogue

Before we wrap this shit up I'll make my plug for Movement.
It doesn't have the art or the level of production that D4N has, and it doesn't have any non electronic artists. But it's got heart, it's got the talent, and you will dance.
If you love electronic music, specifically techno, you need to head to the city where it all started and try Movement at least once. It's a special event.
Memorial Day Weekend Sat/Sun/Mon. You can find me at the RA underground stage complaining about my back hurting.

This thing is in my backyard. You can find me stocking chips by morning and dancing on droogs by night. Come my ladies, come come my ladies.

i wouldn't define it as good per se. it was incredibly bass heavy, the higher frequencies could get drowned out. i wouldn't fucking dream of going near that stage without earplugs, it was insanely loud. it worked for me for the type of music they had on that stage, but i certainly would have liked the higher frequencies to be boosted.
You know what, this is actually one of the first festivals that combines insane good (underground) music artists with my favorite kind of art (visually and lights) and it really makes me wanna get involved with this festival and possibly even go. But, it's across the goddamn ocean and plane tickets aren't getting thrown out the window just like that haha

Well after reading everybody's takes and opinions on the festival it seems safe to say that everyone who saw Mount Kimbie and Tim Hecker thoroughly enjoyed it. They were probably my favorite acts of the whole weekend. James Blake would have been up there but since I was at the blue stage when they moved the red stage up an hour I missed almost half of his set Still loved what I saw tho. Wish somebody would put the setlist up on Setlist.fm. Also Mount Kimbie's. Oh and LOL to the hate for Tim Hecker from all the Thommo fans wanting a good seat. I found it hilarious. In fact I had personal experience with this when some dude in front of me turned around and said "Wow the stuff we put ourselves through for Thom Yorke right?" I chuckled "Speak for yourself man this was expected to be the highlight of my weekend and it is" To which he just gave me a weird look and turned around without another word. Also heard several people behind me talk about how awful it was and that the dude must have some "serious psychological problems" lmfao. I just wanted to turn around and be like you all have no idea. But yeah foreal can we get some of those setlist posted if possible? Mostly interested in James Blake, Mount Kimbie, Forest Swords,Shlohmo (tho.I understand this one may be harder) and Jenny Hval.
All these Justice rave reviews are really making me itch to jump on Sydney City Limits tix...
Dooooooo it.
It's really spendy for just a one day thing tho.... :/ And we have a lot of shows lined up in the first 3 months of 2018, along with being in HI for 2 weeks.
and the line up is only ok, but its not worth the $200. Particularly bc its just a day fest.
How about that $125 rain jacket though? I encountered some bros in the Club Quarters lobby proudly wearing them. Outside of having an outline of the DfN logo it looked like some cheapo rain jacket you could get at Dicks Sporting Goods for $20. I ended up buying the red on black striped sphere shirt in Large. Hopefully it fits...
I don't think they are what you think they are. They aren't cheap material, and are actually pretty thick for an outer wind/rain jacket. I ended up getting one, and so did one of my friends. Admittedly you could probably get something similar in the $65-75 range retail, but there is a difference. The entire point of that jacket was that it was photoluminescent. So when light shines on it, all of the shades of grey on the jacket reverse from dark to light, and the light colors go dark (see the logo, as it's reversed in the flash from what you normally see). The whole point was a creative if not a bit cheeky take on the entire premise of the festival (reversing day for night). Here's a photo we tested with a flash to see how legitimate they were:
I have a hula hoop that does this. Only instead of fabric, it's wrapped in the same reflective tape that is used on construction equipment. It's super cool and is fun to record with flash on- as I imagine this will be fun to take photos with the flash on.

Honestly if any of y'all are still doing festivals sans earplugs (a proper etymotic pair, not the shitty foam variety), you are making a poor life decision re: your hearing. They make even poorly mixed sets sound decent, with the added bonus of avoiding Tinnitus when you are your parents' age.
this thing broke my heart and made my body hurt. it was beautiful and sad and kind of threw me off for a while after.
What in the hell was this? I now feel regret for missing this veritable "Grandma's House" diversion from the future-noir cyberpunk scene of the fest, even if it would result in heartbreak and unexpected phsyical exertion. My feet were already hating me after trudging thru the Saturday evening deluge.
How was St Vincent? I'm disappointed to hear she's not touring with a band.
Apparently after her run of shows in the spring, she's bringing the band back. Presumably for the summer/fall festival circuit and I'm sure additional legs of her own tour. Someone asked her at a VIP Q&A recently.
I am amazed how many people went to this fest solely for Thom Yorke, at least after perusing the /r/dayfornight subreddit. Most of them seem to be displeased by the festival overall due to how they didn't bend over backwards for him. I suppose I'll never understand the perceived genius of Radiohead (or MMJ for that matter).
Figured I'd give my .02 on Day for night. Traveled to Houston for it, been doing festivals for a little over a decade now and can safely say that D4N is the best festival i've ever been to. This includes major players like Roo, ACL, and Jazz fest.
The warehouse experience was like something out of a movie, the first floor stages and then the journey around the insane art installations. I loved how you could literally get lost for hours in that warehouse, and it never seemed crowded.
Top 3 acts: NIN - regardless of rain, the band absolutely killed it, still bummed it was cut short James Blake - this guy is something special.. I'm not really in to newer music, but I can definitely get behind what he is doing. Shlohmo - stumbled on him in the warehouse and he definitely grabbed me. Never heard of him prior to D4N and really got lost in his set. -- i'd say overall the fest organizers crushed the lineup, simply in terms of vibe of the festival and music being played throughout. I honestly couldn't think of a better headliner for a fest like this than NIN. My friends and I discussed and the only names that came up that could beat them were Radiohead, Pink Floyd (only in my dreams), Daft Punk and for me personally Glitch Mob
Biggest Disappointment: Thome Yorke - i'll be the one to speak against him here. The room was too small for his act (not his fault). But I was really amped up leading up to his show when I realized he was playing inside the warehouse. -casual fans were talking the entire performance -sound was too soft -'light show' was dull in comparison to everyone else across the entire weekend.. especially when it was double billed with the visual artist he was performing with. -started the show super dull and slow and literally lost me right off the bat
This leads me to my biggest complaint, there is too much of a break between the last headlining set/outdoor shows to the 12:20-2 headliner. I feel like if Thome played from 11-1 and then they had a DJ close it out after him it would have had a much better flow. Instead after Jusice ended there was some stuff going on briefly in the warehouse, but people were more or less standing around (or searching for water like myself) waiting for the Thome show. Just killed the mood for me, and everyone I was with.. Sounds like I should have went to Nina Kravitz but even getting to Thome 45 minutes early I was towards the back of the warehouse. It also got super stuffy in that warehouse as people filed in for Thome, just too much waiting for me.
Favorite Installation: The long tunnel with the yellow beams into the bright spot light tunnel, that one grabbed me, i felt like aliens were calling me to their planet.
That being said, i will 100% be going back, the fest is just so unique, it's like festival meets warehouse rave meets sci fi movie. I would love for this to turn into a legit 3 day fest instead of a VIP Friday and a Saturday/Sunday general fest day. Do 3 days and end Sunday early, after the headlining set.. and have a better flow between sets. Do a VIP day Thursday night if you must.. but 2 days was just not enough especially when the majority of fans left early Saturday due to rain.
