Euphoria had a 2 for 1 deal a few days ago. I think Middle Lands is going to squeeze it out. It might have one more final year to attempt since it did very well last year and every year before it.
Can't believe Philly is shutting down the Roots Picnic....any reason why?
Unfavorable to me but I wonder if MW keeps Sound on Sound going after this next year.
One of our friends just got back from a roll out there for the Friday sets. He said for the 49.00, he got Pretty Lights Live which he said was great and 3/3-5 hours of Disco Biscuits, also great. But he said 3-4K people at most. That's not going to work going forward.
Holy shiz. That is bad. I heard last year they hit 10k just in camping sales. Middlelands must have sucked this market dry. Euphoria may be done or scale back a ton.

What I didn't ask was if that's for the whole thing or the shows they were at since there were big name conflicts. Still, even if they only did 6 or 7k, it's a fail. We had fun last year, and VIP was great. But the lack of food in the campgrounds, the dust from the aggregate materials and the haul up and down the hill probably burned people out on it even if they fixed some of those issues.
Ouch. Haha. But to help pile on, Losing My Edge may well be in the Top 10 Most Annoying Songs that aren't on pop radio. A cool story? Okay. But an annoying delivery.

It's definitely a song that you either get or you don't. I love it. But I have played it in front of people and gotten really negative reactions.
I love that band. But they appeal to a very niche but dedicated fan base. The younger crowd (who are the bread and butter of the fest industry), have no idea who they are, and don't care. Its kind of a bummer to see their "reunion" falling flat on its face, and hurting the entire industry.

How are they hurting the entire industry? Whatever morons thought they were a good choice to headline an EDM fest deserve to fail.

Bonnaroo sales last year, ACL sales last year, Wayhome sales last year, Panorama as a whole did pretty awful (and thats in their own backyard), ect. Whereever they headline (except Coachella and Lolla who always sell out anyway), the fest does poorly.

Didn't ACL sell out? Bonnaroo has been trending downward for years. I thought you said Pano didn't sell because there are literally zero people in NYC in July?

Yeah the time of year for Pano is why I think it hasn't done too well. I think LCD is still a huge draw in NYC proper (ticket sales for last weeks shows were rabid, I ran into ppl who paid upwards of $400 to be there); but it is another example of a fest that didn't draw too well with LCD at the top.
I know WayHome sales from last year lead to a budget cut (and the horrible lineup they have this year).
As far as Roo goes they are doing just fine this year from what I hear. Did fine in 2015 too (over 70k in sales). Last year was a problem (LCD headlined, a little over 40k showed up).
Chiming in on ACL - Yes it did sellout (weekend passes) so to understand the value of the fest you have to look at resale value of day passes on stubhub.
2015's resales I believe we're ALL above face value of approx $90 (Foo Fighters, The Strokes, Drake, Florence and the Machine)
2016 resale of daily tickets were at one time: (because Fri/Sun didn't sell out of day passes)
Friday: $60 (RadioHead - Major Lazer) Saturday: $150 or more (Kendrick - Chainsmokers) Sunday: $35 (Mumford - LCD Soundsystem)
To LCD's defense, they weren't even the mainstage HL or bigger of the 2 mainstages. That was Mumford who drew a much bigger crowd. Together they had the least valuable day.
As far as music trends go, one thing I noticed during SXSW this year as how hip hop and trap rap absolutely crushed every other event imaginable. Not much EDM occurs during SX but I think fests bread and butter at this point is hip hop and EDM. Kids wanna get lit.

The fact that LCD headlined every festival last year is a symptom of the festival bubble starting to burst, not the cause of it. Festivals were so desperate for fresh acts they treated them like Outkast, and it shouldn't surprise anyone that they're not Outkast.
There's a market for LCD as a headliner, and if they had played only a handful of fests and then dropped some new music, they'd be on much better footing.

True. Like I said they have a dedicated fan base. Its not a huge one, but big enough to be a draw for select performances. Problem is the live shows have saturated the market and the base isnt big enough to sustain them all.
I think it's not so much that the festival bubble bursting as normalizing to like how festivals in Europe are. Very few of those sell out far in advance.

You might be right on that. I don't think it's really going to burst either - at least not completely. But some will fail. Most of us will continue to hit at least a few of them every year. But since there are so many, there's only so much shit up and coming and so much shit that can be recycled at or near the top.
Normalizing is definitely a better word that burst. Of the big 5, I imagine if Roo does "poorly" again then it will just re-brand itself or scale down. The demand for a "festival experience" is still high and may continue barring an econimic recession. Some fests will grow, some will die like any business. Even the likes of Hangout Fest is looking at expanding to Australia.

Regarding how well/poorly Bonnaroo is doing this year, I guess we'll have an idea when we see the map. If BFE camping is back, they are probably doing OK.

Roo selling 70k tickets is definitely an improvement over last year. But they have their biggest single headliner ever, and arguably their biggest top 3 ever in terms of salespower, and they're still below their 75+k average. Deadmau5 and Billy Joel's corpse sold over 75k. Eminem, Arcade Fire, and WSMFP sold 85k. Bonnaroo has some issues right now, and there's more going on than "they booked LCD Soundsystem last year"

This probably says more about my brain then it does Bonnaroo, but several times I have forgotten who the non-U2 headliners are. Like I have to stop and really think about it for twenty seconds or so, then I remember.

Without going into politics, do you think our current atmosphere will here hinder festivals attendence? My guess is people feel less secure about their future and don't feel as confident spending extra cash on a 3rd or 4th festival trip. (Not me though).

Is it? 2015 they did over 70k. 2017 they are inching to that marker (doubtful they hit it, but still a huge improvement). Last year the sales were in the toilet, for not just them, but a bunch of festivals where LCD also happened to be the headliner.
I think Bonnaroo's problem is their crappy undercard. Fix that up and we're in business.
I know thats what people say around here; and for me personally I agree, the undercards have taken a huge dip in the last few years...
But if they are doing much better this year (when the majority of inforoo thinks the undercard is just as crappy as last year), then maybe that wasn't the problem from a big picture perspective?

Much better than what? If they sell 70k this year (and you're saying they won't even make that mark) that would be their second worst sales total in history.

Close to 30k more people is still a heck of an improvement. Last year was only about 45k.
