I doubt Moderat and Nico Jaar pulled particularly well at Coachella either, but they book them anyway.
Todd Terje, Underworld, and St Germain all had pretty thin crowds. Every set doesn't need to be packed.
Your entire argument is the undercard is the problem... so you are saying they need to book more acts with pretty thin crowds that arent packed? You think that will move more tickets?
Why does Coachella bother to book those smaller, niche acts if they have no impact on ticket sales and they could just cut them out to boost profit margins?
Is there a difference between judging lineup value on the day of your purchase and the individual decisions you make after you've made that purchase, on the festival dates, about which act you choose to see in each time slot?

It's more than just about the music. 'The Farm' is a shithole outside of music. The Coachella Valley is a venue that cannot be replicated.
I'm not just dick riding here, I truly feel its festival's best parts all polished into one. I realize what you mean they are THE brand at this point, but I guess all I'm saying is it's a reputation they've earned, built on quality and consistency.
I haven't been but anyone that I have met absolutely loves the experience there. Of course, if you don't like camping, which a lot of people don't I assume they'd prefer the polished and boutique Coachella over the rugged Bonaroo experience.

Lineup Diversity probably = larger and more diverse crowds

You can go to Disney or Astro World. Take your pick.

You think those acts cost them a lot of money? Acts want to play Coachella, being part of the brand name helps their career. Plus Euro fest season hasn't started, so its not like they have offers to play anywhere else this time of year.

No, but they obviously do cost them some money. If I was running a business and I could cut out a cost without having any effect on gross income, I would do it. If there's not any value there in terms of profit for the festival, then is there value in booking them at all?
Nice job cropping out the second, related question in my argument.

Roo could always just book Widespread Panic, String Cheese, Dave Matthews, and Phish. Boom, 85k tickets sold again.
Middle of Nowhere Trip: Your Favorite Early 2000s Memories Relived!
Seriously, in a few years those fans will start to have the income that the stones, macca etc. fans have and they could charge a stupid amount for this and make so much money

Nice job editing it in after I already started answering.
Somebody has to play in those slots. Its not cutting any sort of cost. Playing Coachella helps an artists career and gives them exposure. If Moderat says they dont want to play, another 100 acts are standing right behind them wanting to take that slot.
Playing in the middle of nowhere TN, doesnt help an acts career the way playing close to major media markets like LA or NYC does. Bonnaroo is a brand, but not in the way that Coachella or Lolla are. Coachella/Lolla can sell hundreds of thoudands of tickets, regardless of the lineup. Roo also has to compete with other offers that acts are getting to play elsewhere.

Side note, at the end of the Bon Iver performance JV mentioned Eaux Claires and that if people like that type of music they should come. Not saying that his fest is dying, but does anyone think they might be struggling selling tickets or was that just a genuine plug for his own hard work and brainchild?

Not familiar with Lock'n eh?
Very very true. I was thinking more of a big blowout weekend like East/West and Desert Trip

I don't know what any of this has to do with Bonnaroo should stop booking such shitty lineups. It was able to work up until the point AC sold out and other fests are grabbing worthwhile artists in June. It's pretty obvious when this festival started sucking.
This year is probably more appropriate to discuss considering those stacked lineups like '14 are in the past. I don't recall how this sold, but I guarantee you Billy Joel and Mumsons had little do to with why it did. Shitty headliners aside, one could still catch acts like Jamie xx, SBTRKT, and Flylo in addition to flavor of the month indie rock and poor EDM.
Edit: also adding unique shit to your undercard like Atomic Bomb and proven bands like Spoon probably helps when being force fed Billy fucking Joel.

Roo used to book acts like Nick Cave and Darkside... Remember how empty those shows were? Remember how packed Skrillex was?
I dont think Roos problem is that they arent booking more empty undercard performances.
Nick Cave ---- Frank Ocean --- Flaming Lips ---- Skrillix Superjam
Darkside ---- --- Kaskade ---- Zedd
Hard to compare without an overview of what was going on that night.... which shows a better variety of choices. Much better, IMO, than they've had the last several late nights.

Skrillex, Kaskade, and Zedd overwhelmingly outdrew the rest. Not even close. Can you blame them for booking Borgore, Getter, or Nghtmre (essentially Skrillex-lite). Thats what ppl want.
Dude Mumsons probably had the most packed What stage show in the history of the fest.
It wasn't as big as RHCP, but that's not surprising considering the fest. Plus it was probably more a product of, "I mean we're here I guess". Now swap those headliners with the past two year's undercard and see how it sells.

IF THAT'S THE ONLY THING PEOPLE WANTED THEY WOULDN'T BE SELLING SEVERAL THOUSAND FEWER TICKETS THIS YEAR.

No, and that's not my point. There is a need for variety to max out ticket sales. Which is why it's kind of short-sighted to leave out Frank Ocean and Flaming Lips in the comparison you made.
There was a nice choice of options going until like 2am that night.

They are doing nearly 60% better than last year, and I bet if they stay the course theyll be back to normal next year. The problem is they tried to pass one of those "popular niche acts" you love so much, off as a headliner, and they drew flies. Just like Mysteryland drew flies with them and had to cancel, just like Wayhome took such a hit with them they had to cut the budget this year, just like ACL tickets to see them were $30. Enjoy them at Pitchfork in front of 20k ppl. They had no business headlining a fest meant for 75k. And the way back to 75k isnt with more "popular niche acts" playing to empty tents.

And now you're blaming this shit on LCD? What in the actual fuck is wrong with you this morning? It's Easter, dude.
