What's wrong with MSG? Genuinely curious as I've never been, but I love a Peruvian restaurant right across the street from there.
I've only been there three times, but to summarize:
-Overpriced even by arena standards due to its prime location. -The general admission floor (when applicable) is sectioned off between East and West, rather than one big communal floor. -Sound volume is way too low and doesn't properly reach the back of the venue. -Fucking freezing inside due to the A/C being cranked all the way up.
Admitted, I'm also salty that one of the times I attended was totally ruined by a bunch of cunts near me in the crowd. Luckily on my next visit I manned up and confronted these types of characters, which made the experience more tolerable. Obviously that isn't a strictly an MSG thing (though I think it's amplified due to it being in Manhattan). I also will admit that arenas in general aren't great places for concerts. But I have no interest or intention whatsoever in visiting again. If there's a band I want to see that's playing there, I would much rather travel further and spend more money to get a better context to experience the show in.
If you're really interested in getting liquored up beforehand, I think the Hooters that is a block away sells alcohol for relatively cheap. There's also a few terrible Irish pubs nearby which won't break the bank. Otherwise, yeah, you're in the center of a city now basically only for rich people so alcohol will be expensive there.

There's a Peruvian restaurant across the street where you can get a half pound rotisserie chicken, French fries and a salad or beans with rice for less than $10.

Thanks for letting me know. Though my comments regarding "overpriced" were mainly referring to the ticket prices. If you look at any given tour, you'll notice that the MSG show is always a fuckton more expensive (Depeche Mode comes to mind). I get that this is because of the location and the unionized employees, but it doesn't make for an attractive venue. Good point in bringing up the corporate ticketholders as well - it's definitely hard AF to get good tickets there.
The east/west thing for general admission floor happens with other venues as well - Agganis Arena in Boston, for one. That venue sucks as well, but it's a slight improvement over MSG.

I also think, as much as people don't like to admit it, bands/management put a fair amount of those West GA tickets directly on the secondary market to make good $ from them. And, yeah, I bought upper tier Depeche Mode tickets since I didn't feel like breaking the bank for 2 and since all the good ones only come with the VIP packages anyways.

Very true. Even Depeche Mode is selling off their top seats for between $800-$1,200 a piece. It's insane.
Also, re-listening to The War On Drugs "Lost In A Dream" at the moment. Would be awesome to get them doing a 6-7pm set at Gov Ball next year, even if they strike me as more of a Panorama type band.
They were at GovBall 2015, so it's not out of the question. Also, I wouldn't mind this, as I skipped them that year to check out "Weird" Al Yankovic, instead. I have no regrets.

Same. Weird Al was awesome and an excellent booking, given how little he does festivals.
I hope Gov Ball keep on booking these unique and rare gets like Bjork, Weird Al, Air, The Avalanches etc.
I second this. Hopefully the EDM/pop-leaning bookings don't break the bank so there's budget left over for more "botique" bookings which might not move a ton of tickets but still give them cred while allowing for sales to remain strong. I'm basically of the mindset that if an act doesn't appeal to the 15-25 year-old group, Gov Ball will be weary of booking them.

I'm sure there should be a way to book both EDM/pop-leaning acts and more boutique acts at the same time. At least the founders of this fest are still doing the bookings as far as I'm aware, so I have some faith in them.
The best thing a festival can do in my opinion is get exclusives. I think that is what really put GovBall an edge over most fests this year and why Coachella has thrived. With a bunch of festivals having a ton of the same artists it detracts from the experience. By having a handful of artists that don't tour frequently or first US shows etc you get to experience something special with that artist and see something not everyone will that year.

Not sure if she's still active but if Founders could pull Tracy Chapman for a mid-afternoon set I would die. Kinda feels like something Coachella would do, though. Also I'd love to see Dipset on the lineup next year but after the Wu-Tang set, I'm not even sure this crowd deserves them
