I think that mock is way too stacked personally. I think you'd see thee xx and/or Queens in the top 4 without a doubt.
Boston Calling and Outside Lands respectively would beg to differ, but I'd have 0 qualms with Queens in a top slot
Hard to argue with you about Boston Calling, that was out of left field. But Outside lands is huge. Look who they have billed above Queens - who are yet to release their new record. Once that's out, I see them being top 4 (considering we're speculating about a 2018 festival)

Billing is always kind of weird fest to fest, but Lorde and alt-J both billed above QOTSA would indicate that they probably aren't really considered headliner-level by most major fests.
Like theeimportance said, if they do headline, I think they'll have one of the smallest crowds of a GB headliner in recent years, depending on who they're up against. But I also don't really care; a full headlining set from them would be great
Bitter Old People Who Don't Remember Being Young And Doing The Same Shit They Now Complain About would be a good sub if those are the headliners.
(I kid, I'm 33 myself).
In all seriousness, I don't mind that young kids THAT much. There's a certain excitement they have for specific bands which you can't really muster once you get past a certain age. That being said, unlike Coachella, Gov Ball doesn't take that much effort to go to so you get a lot of people just showing up to essentially have a 3 day party with some music in the background. Having lame EDM doesn't help but is what it is. Hopefully they book some good old man bands next year as well for the likes of me.
I will say I didn't mind it as much as I thought either. It was visible but not really that annoying, since I avoided most of the shows with those crowds.
I did have this interaction with a teenage dude at Zane Lowe:
Teenage Dude: Hey, can I get on your shoulders? Me: What? No! TD: Why not? It'll be cool! Everyone's doing it Me: No TD: Oh come one Me: Why don't you ask the tall guy next to you TD: I did, he said no Me: Ask literally anyone else then TD: Why will no one put me on their shoulders?? Me: Because no one wants a dude on their shoulders

They are a band that I would travel to see and would fully expect a very tiny crowd. Not sure if I would prefer that for a big rock show or not. It was kind of weird for Tool.
Someone like every bigger US fest they've ever played?
Again, excited and fine with them headlining, but unless their new album does something magical I don't see them getting any more popular than they've been in the past
I think they will figure it out. I remember you saying something about Bon Iver not wanting to play any festival where they werent the headliner, or closing out a stage. Since then they have played Coachella and Boston Calling where they werent closers. Bands figure it out.

I think they're one of the tightest rock bands around these days, and I think they're perfectly fine rounding out the top 8 or so at fests like they are at Outside Lands. But given their popularity they don't have any business being in the top 3 anywhere, especially at Gov Ball.

Both of these arguments could be used for bands like Arctic Monkeys as well.

Arctic Monkeys is a much tougher one for me to gauge personally. I was under the impression that AM (the album) did very well in the States and really exploded their US popularity in a way that their previous albums had never done. I was in the pit, but the talk was that they drew a bigger crowd than Kanye at Roo in 2014 IIRC.
But could they headline a major US festival next year? I'm not so sure. I mean Phoenix headlined Coachella in 2013 and I think the Monkeys would be more popular touring a successful album in 2018 than they were at that time, but that doesn't mean their crowd would be particularly large.
I'm incredibly biased though cause I love the Monkeys and I want them to be obvious headliners. If the Black Keys can do it so can they dammit.

LCD Soundsystem.
I didn't want to say that, for fear of a "Enough with LCD Soundsystem" backlash...but yes. Please.
There are no rules to this anymore. Phoenix headlined Coachella and went on to sub many others. They just headlined Gov Ball. Are they headliners again? My answer would be they always were.

Also if we're talking Gov Ball specifically I think the Arctic Monkeys hit that same teen demo that's into The Strokes for whatever reason and young people would turn up for them moreso than QOTSA. But maybe I'm way off with that.

Arctic Monkeys were booking 1K venues towards the end of the AM touring cycle, unfortunately. I don't see things changing too much.

Arctic Monkeys is a headliner for sure, unless their new album is a complete bust

I probably use Coachella to gauge things too often, but I think they would play #2 there. I guess they are at a point where headlining mid-tier fests is possible. Their sound/look are perfectly marketable for the young festival goer and the older crowd already appreciate them for the most part. They are still somewhat of a niche though.

I can see AM taking the same spot Gambino did this year unless their next album is AM massive. Either way, I think they're more of a headliner than QOTSA and maybe even Phoenix. I feel like they'd draw a bigger crowd at Gov Ball than either of them.
