Looks like Chapelle is doing a whole run at Radio City with different openers. The Roots are opening Aug 1-4th, Chris Rock is opening on the 5th, Erykah Badu on the 9th, opener on the 15th is TBA, Trevor Noah is opening on the 18th, Gambino on August 19th, Ali Wong and TBA on the 24th.

Wait, isn't this the GovBall 2018 thread? I was hoping not to have to read any more about Childish Gambino in GovBall chat now that the 2017 edition is over.

so gambino doing a music show opening up for a comedy act? are we sure its not a donald glover standup?
Says Gambino. The Roots and Erykah Badu are opening up some of the shows too.
A year or so ago he had similar shows. The one I went to had Janelle monae and Busta rhymes. I forget how the set up was...like if music closed it or comedy. I think comedy

I figure since its part of Chapelle's run that he closes, no?
Glad I caught Gambino at Gov Ball, now that I think about it, I am not really sure Id want to see him at Radio City. I think I'll try for the Chris Rock night.
Would Tribe headline if they aren't even the top act at Panorama?
No.
Yeah I think their Panorama show will be the most interesting since it's their first one back. By next years Gov Ball that intrigue will diminish that I think they'd be somewhere pretty close to that Wu-Tang slot, more about NYC nostalgia than anything else.

Maybe but I just looked up an article from the show I went to and they had Dave do his set and then music after. Sort of like his block party thing where he would say a few words to introduce the acts and then leave/watch. These may be different though. I think he didn't want everyone getting all hyped up and energetic from monae and Busta and then quietly sit through a stand up comedy set.

I'd honestly prefer it if thats the order they go with.

I think Pitchfork is their first one back
I really wonder what these shows are going to be like. All of the televised ones up till now have had Busta there to balance things out. Wondering if the dates coming up are going to mostly be recordings of Phifes parts played over a PA. Would kind of suck if thats the case I think.

I've never seen them, so I'm basically fine with everything.

That's a good attitude to have. I caught them at Rock the Bells back in the day. It was a pretty amazing show.

Maybe Tribe aren't main stage closers at Gov Ball, I'll concede that, but I can absolutely see them closing Honda or subbing on the main. I don't see them as a nostalgia act, I think this run has more of a victory lap vibe; they just put out one of the best albums of 2016. I have a Sunday pass to Pano mainly for Tribe but to Launchpad's point, if they're not bringing someone along and are relying on just Phife recordings, I'd rather they didn't even do these shows at all.
Also, why doesn't LCD just do back-to-back nights at MSG or Barclays and get it over with? The demand is obviously there and would (hopefully) spare a Gov Ball 2018 booking

I had this dream idea that, Pano being in their backyard, they'd bring out a different NYC MC to do Phife's verses in each song - sort of like an all-star tribute from the city. I'm guessing that'd be a logistical nightmare and, if I had to bet, it'd be that we're going to get Phife recordings over the PA. But a guy can dream.

1) James Murphy has said they don't really prefer to play arenas at this point in their existence for reasons of intimacy. Take that with whatever grain of salt you want, of course. They could step up to Terminal 5, but given that the sound there sucks the way it does, I don't blame him for shying away from it.
2) Spare a GovBall 2018 booking? Why would anyone want to do that? I mean, I know they're all over the festival circuit this year and last, but I say any opportunity to see LCD Soundsystem under the night sky is one I will wholeheartedly embrace, damnit.

Id imagine LCD fans are very happy that they are doing 14+ shows at a small venue instead of 1 at MSG

Agreed 100% on the first part. If I hear that the Pitchfork set went off well, I'd probably be interested in grabbing a Sunday pass for Pano. If its just a recording of Phife with a fresh from surgery Q-Tip trying to keep up; its a hard pass.
I heard that LCD were at one point scheduled for a Barclays show. They cancelled it along with a bunch of other dates last year to finish the album. I think the first residency came about because AEG wanted a big show for the BK Steel launch. This one seems like it came together really last minute. I think they just had a good time back in April, the dates were open, and all of them pretty much live in the city. Seems like an easier thing to put together than an arena date. I doubt they'll play Gov Ball next year, but I would be into it if they did.
