Also, why doesn't LCD just do back-to-back nights at MSG or Barclays and get it over with? The demand is obviously there and would (hopefully) spare a Gov Ball 2018 booking
1) James Murphy has said they don't really prefer to play arenas at this point in their existence for reasons of intimacy. Take that with whatever grain of salt you want, of course. They could step up to Terminal 5, but given that the sound there sucks the way it does, I don't blame him for shying away from it.
2) Spare a GovBall 2018 booking? Why would anyone want to do that? I mean, I know they're all over the festival circuit this year and last, but I say any opportunity to see LCD Soundsystem under the night sky is one I will wholeheartedly embrace, damnit.
I don't know if they've started playing new material yet, but they'll probably want to start working on some of that in front of an audience at some point.

It's just I saw their set at Coachella 2016 and, as open as I was going into it, I left completely underwhelmed. Guess they're just not my cup of tea. Playing Prince's "Creep" cover (don't know if it was their or GV's decision) as well as their cover of "Heroes" were definitely highlights of the weekend, though
How can we hate on Goldenvoice's Panorama Festival today? Subtly devalue ATCQ's first show back in NYC after losing a primary member/releasing one of the best albums of 2016.

Their cover of Controversy those weekends was great, also.

You really crave attention.
Please continue to make baseless assumptions. If Tribe were playing Govball, you'd be hard selling it like no other.

Who is making baseless assumptions? Q-Tip will be fresh from surgery, and Phife is gone so either theyll get someone to make a guest appearance or itll be a recording. Those are facts, not assumptions.
Saying "Oh em gee guys itll be great no matter what!" like your dumbass, would be making an assumption.

I saw LCD at both Lolla and Wayhome (amazing) and at one of the BK Steel shows (amazing). That being said, I just don't think there is a ton of value to Gov Ball booking them next year unless they are devoid of potential headliners for the mature/alternative part of the festival.
This festival is skewing younger now and the youths don't really care about LCD. And their die-hard NYC fans will have had at least 14 opportunities to see them in NYC in the last 2 years. I love LCD and would be totally fine with them being in the Top-5 of GB18 - but it doesn't feel inspired and wouldn't move the needle.

Totally. They kind of fit into that same category like Phoenix. Theyd be a good alternate to play at the same time as a big hip hop name. Either way I think the crowd would be pretty thin for them.

I mean Phoenix just headlined. I doubt many came out just for them and if anything it was more about filling a slot.
Even with their busy NYC schedule, headlining this one at some point is inevitable. They just played most of the festivals out there, so there only a few mid-tier fests left to knock out. Premiering their new show at this one could be good for everyone.

^^ Never been to Gov Ball, hates on it all the time, posts in the thread constantly for no other reason than to be an obnoxious troll looking for attention, but boy does he have booking suggestions!

Theres an opportunity here for me to talk about how you consistently talk bad about all Goldenvoice events, but I don't want to fight you today, Launchpad. Go away.

I thought that myself and was hoping he wasn't that desperate.

Don't see anyone hating. Just curious how this ends up panning out. Hopefully we'll all be stoked after Pitchfork

James Murphy is up with a blog explaining the new BK Steel shows. Pretty much the last run sold out fast, everyone complained about ticket bots, they had a good time, and he pretty much lives right there so they just decided to do it again. Works for me.

Gah, I find that so depressing, even as I know you're absolutely right. It's more just that GovBall is moving away from my tastes so much because I'm old. Someone in GovBall reddit posted a "Which year's lineup was the best" post, and looking back at, like, 2014, it was indie rock bands all the way down (yes, with lots of other stuff mixed in, but an LCD Soundsystem would have fit perfectly on that bill). Now, we're talking about one of the biggest indie rock bands around not even being able to draw opposite a headliner.
Sigh. Rush was right when they asked time to stand still. OH GOD I'M QUOTING RUSH I'M EVEN OLDER THAN I THOUGHT.

I despise Pitchfork in general, but they can move tickets while still preserving quality. There are other mid-tier fests still doing it (Dayfornight, Eaux Claires, FYF, etc). The market is there, especially in an eclectic city like NYC.

2016 was also a very indie-heavy lineup and The Strokes had one of the biggest crowds I've ever seen. This year was poppier than usual, but I don't think its any sign that Gov Ball are moving away from indie rock or that people won't come through for indie/rock bands. Gov Ball has always skewed young, but they still book stuff like Tool and Bjork.

2014 was one of the best fest lineups ever I think. Hard to ever top that. But I don't really think they have changed booking styles all too much. The idea has always been to try and have something for everyone. This past years line up was great and I think accomplished that. Meadows is meant to be more of a hip hop fest, but I think its one of the best lineups of the year, for my tastes anyway. I feel like that one has even more established names that should appeal to an older crowd (but I think the youngins will still be the majority because thats just the way it is).
Totally. I guess my concern is just that Sunday's relatively small draw is going to send Founders the message that there's no profit in the genres that were featured that day, and that we'll see them shying away from it, now.
Shifting topics here, who gets to Corona Park first?
Do you think the city'll cave on this, eventually? I have to imagine the amount of use of the park by the general public is going to make it hard for any festival to take it over for a weekend.

Someone will get there, eventually. Founders tried to get the Meadows there again this year. GV had their eye on it Panorama 2016 and reinforced the thought with the recent New Yorker profile on the guy who created (?) Coachella. I think it's just a matter of what point in the year and giving the city something substantial to sell the community on. I think the last part is their biggest hurdle
