He'll probably reserve Seven Nation Army for the encore and with a new album on the way (and not a radio hit in sight) I think its safe to assume his set will feature less WS/Raconteours material and more solo stuff ...with the skewing of the age being fairly young 16-23 at Gov Ball does 25% of that demo even know who The White Stripes are? Post Malone is going to be the set they're all going to want to be at.
Question: Is there any rock band that you cannot insert into this sentence? Aside from the classics and the new junk like TOP and Imagine Dragons, I don't think there is. Chili Peppers and The Killers I suppose.
Oh, sure. I remember being impressed by the size of Catfish & the Bottlemen's crowd (mostly young 'uns) in '16, and Cage the Elephant had a really big draw last year.
...that's assuming you'd categorize those as rock bands, I s'pose. I'm not sure what other category they'd fall into.

The only modern day rock bands ("Modern" meaning still releasing new material that is somewhat relevant and not a heritage act) that still matter for hte 16-23 crowd are Red Hot Chili Peppers, Green Day, Foo Fighters and (I suppose) Fall Out Boy.

98% of the people under the age of 24 will be at Travis Scott regardless.
Same thing will happen with Jack White vs Post Malone. Unless Jack moves a lot of day passes on his own, Post Malone will have a much larger crowd.
I expect almost everyone that buys a day pass for Fri will be at Jack White. 3-day passes strong Post Malone bias, but for most in younger Demo they'd chose buying a day pass for Travis/Halsey or Eminem over Jack White.

JW drew a sizeable crowd in 2014 and if I remember correctly, he was up against Skrillex.
True. But top line that year was Outkast/VW/JW/Strokes and I think crowd has skewed younger since then. Also think Post Malone in 2018 has more hype/draw than Skrillex in 2014 based on fest graphics at those times.

Man, you managed to list 4 bands that I would guess don't matter AT ALL to the 16-23 crowd anymore, are releasing new material but aren't really relevant, and would probably almost all fall into heritage now.

Majority of my direct reports are 18-24 and they're alllllll about Post Malone. His music has become 2nd to him being a living meme. If he draws a huge crowd and JW doesn't it concerns me that more and more multi-genre fests will just stop booking alt/rock acts as headliners. 8-10yrs ago you didn't see many fests being headlined by hip hop/pop artists, they were in the undercard...and now it seems were in the midst or a cultural shift where the opposite is happening, and you cant blame fests, it makes sense financially! SK can book a rock-only crowd for a fest with a capacity of 25k but if Gov Ball rolled out that lineup for a 65k capacity fest in NYC, they'd sell maybe half?

Agreed. I still think he'll pull in the single day ticket attendees being paired with YYYs. Whereas Post will appeal more to the 3 day crowd.
Being outside of the target demo for this lineup, my friends and I will only be looking at single day Friday

Way way off.
If it was 2006 he would've been spot on
Green Day is still big with 16-23. Same with Blink. That brand type of pop-punk is still huge with teens and young twenties, and it's not like any new bands have come along to take that mantle from them.

Anyone saying RHCP aren't relevant to younger gen obviously wasn't at Meadows last year. Dear God there were so many children there for them it was ridiculous.

Just because a band pulls in a big audience does not make them relevant.

The point being to rebut saying the 16-23 demo isn't into them, by giving an example of the opposite being very true. I'm not just talking like "meh I don't wanna see Bassnectar, let's check out them other guys", I mean swarms of teens & early 20's losing their shit. Before that night I never would've thought they had any millenial appeal, but that was nuts.

Any band with their amount of hits is bound to have pretty cross-generational appeal. But it's not like RHCP are a band people my age are actively talking about on a remotely regular basis. People aren't putting Can't Stop or Dani California on their party playlist. They're a nostalgia act. The last time they were relevant was when Stadium Arcadium came out and I'd bet that all the songs that those millenials were freaking out about were likely from that album or earlier.

Yea, I'd say they're relevant enough that they're headlining major festivals. I agree that their output since stadium arcadium is laughable but I think reducing RHCP to a nostalgia act is a bit of a stretch. They've achieved enough success over the years to avoid that tag

If people aren't excited about your output from the last decade, you are a nostalgia act.
I'd disagree with that definition. You're essentially reducing every act who stops making new music to nothing more than a nostalgia act.
Third eye blind is a nostalgia act. Soul Asylum, Smashmouth these are nostalgia acts. Music that can be tied to a moment in the past without carrying any real significance.

Damn has it been more than a decade since Stadium Arcadium

Your point is right, but I'd remove 3eb from that list. IMO they've had some pretty great songs on their last album.

Fine, if it helps to better make my point I’ll amend it to say that RHCP are basically a classic rock band. Either way, they’re not “relevant”
