I'd disagree with that definition. You're essentially reducing every act who stops making new music to nothing more than a nostalgia act.
Third eye blind is a nostalgia act. Soul Asylum, Smashmouth these are nostalgia acts. Music that can be tied to a moment in the past without carrying any real significance.
Your point is right, but I'd remove 3eb from that list. IMO they've had some pretty great songs on their last album.
That's fair. In the great subjective world of music you're absolutely correct. I can't say I've listened to their newest output to form an opinion. In my world, they merely bring me back to the late 90s when I hear their songs.

Fine, if it helps to better make my point I’ll amend it to say that RHCP are basically a classic rock band. Either way, they’re not “relevant”
Yea I'm in agreeance with that classification. Their relevancy within the scope of new music is non existent.

What are some of these pretty great songs? Genuinely curious. I don't know any Third Eye Blind besides their 90s radio hits.

Is there any discount for buying day passes with a Citi code? I'm not in any rush to buy my Friday passes, but the ticketing website implies there might be a discount with a code.

As a huge Third Eye Blind fan, I’ll be the first to admit that the vast majority of their recent music is garbage. But most people that follow them closely will tell you songs like Slow Motion, Background, God of Wine and Motorcycle Driveby that didn’t get radio play are their best songs. In the last decade the only songs I found passable by them are Don’t Believe a Word and Why Can’t You Be. To their credit they do at least play their hits and their first album produced a few of the biggest singles of the 90’s.
I'll still back the fact that Green Day are not yet a nostalgia act. They had 2 #1 alternative hits off Revolution Radio (2016 release) and their shows are still full of younger kids.
To everyone's point above, new(ish) rock bands (being liberal with the term) that are relevant to the young demo are Vampire Weekend, Arctic Monkeys, The Black Keys, Tame Impala, Twenty One Pilots, Alt-J, etc.

The thing with a band like Green Day is that so much of their appeal is focused outside the traditional music festival audience.
If they were on the Gov Ball lineup instead of Jack White, I'm guessing you'd see a contingent of their fans there for whom Green Day aren't a nostalgia act and who aren't there for much else on the lineup (which will probably be the case for Eminem). But for the average Gov Ball attendee, Green Day's appeal is based around the nostalgia of Dookie, American Idiot, and whatever dumb life event was soundtracked by that Time of Your Life song.

I think NERD goes with Eminem pretty well. Basically if you listened to radio hip hop in the mid 2000s, thats what you heard.

I think the bigger issue with getting a band like Green Day is that they still sell tickets very well, both at decently large venues and for pretty high prices. Hard to get bands like that to come to a festival at times if they arent going to be able to draw as a true #1 or #2 with a festival crowd.

I'd argue that people over estimate VW's popularity now. They couldn't sell out Barclays Center in 2013 on their last (very good) album tour and have disappeared since then.
I put them in the same category to as LCD and Arcade Fire. They're relevant to a portion of that demo (call them hipsters if you will) but in terms of mass appeal, nope.
i dont get the appeal of VW at all. the live sets i saw were so boring, id rather listen to Bastille
Damn! Thats harsh lol. I thought they were really boring at Roo a few years back. I don't dislike them though. They have some fun songs. Just saying they def are not as popular as most people think. Take a look at their stream number on Spotify vs say Arctic Monkeys. Its not really close. Plus its been half a decade since their last album. They have cooled off quite a bit.

Putting the question differently, though, they'd still be #1 on their day at Gov Ball / Pano (whatever they play next) when they come back, right?
I'm also convinced they'd be top 8 for sure at Lolla, and probably Coachella headliners too.

Depends I guess. I mean Phoenix is pretty close in popularity and they still headlined Gov Ball.. But they played to a basically empty field; while everybody was at Gambino. So something like that.

Yeah I'm guessing they'll be pushing hard for headlining spots and will probably get them at most/all of the US fests they play. They just won't be packed headlining sets.
EDIT: Although there's also the chance that their album/singles push them to at least hold that spot confidently. Ezra and Rostam managed to keep their finger on the pulse fairly well for those first 3 records
Awesome. Curious as to whether this will be like a LCD/BonIver frenzy to get tickets.
It def will be.
Think there will be more dates added? It's on a holiday weekend so lot of folks out of town meaning there will probably be demand for additional nights the next week.

I think you should have a pretty good chance if you're on AXS at 12 on Friday. Also vivid/stubhub the week of might go down near face value with a lot of people going away last minute.
Love Brooklyn Steel but kind of wish they did 2-3 nights in Prospect Park instead. Phoenix outside is magical.

Even Forest Hills Stadium would have been great and less of a hassle to get tix.
