You can always walk up to security have them open the yondr pouch and step outside if you need to make a call.
I would be waiting on emergency calls/texts from my children or caregivers. I don't want to be walking to security and stepping outside every 15 minutes to make sure everything is OK. I want to enjoy a show. What if someone legitimately needs to get a hold of me for an emergency? What if someone close to you died? What if my child was in the hospital? What if my house was on fire? Oh sorry, Jack Whiite wouldn't let me check my texts, I didn't see that for four hours doesn't cut it for me.
I think you're kind of making Jack's point for him. Society functioned pretty ok before cells were invented. People went to concerts. The sun came up everyday. Do you not ever go on an airplane?

Society functioned fine before Air Conditioning was invented too. If you went to a show in the summer where the Artist said that there would be no air conditioning inside, would that effect your decision to go? Technology changes lives, and in todays society not having a phone on you and being able to talk with people quickly can be seriously hampering. I get why Dave Chappelle and other comedians do it (once your jokes are out there, anyone can pirate them), but for Jack White to be doing it for 4 hours of time, thats too far IMO
It's not 20 years ago though......and I would have been drinking at some college party so it probably never would have crossed my mind.
See snoke's reply. People went out and trusted their babysitters just fine without having to play helicopter parent.
I get that point but I don't think helicopter parent is the same as the true emergencies that I listed before. My kid bumps his head or had a cough, fine. My house is burning down, I want to leave the show.

But that's the point in a way - if Jack White was playing a show in a warehouse without A/C, he'd want the people there who were willing to sweat it out. I get that people need to feel like they can be contacted. But if that need is too distracting, he'd rather have someone there that is 100% committed.
Jack White should stop being such a tool and just deal with it. It's a shame he has to isolate some of his fans for not being, "100 percent committed".

Trust me, I get it. But Jack claims to have wrote this album in an empty apartment with no distractions. He cares about his art and wants people to experience it the way he created it. Is that kind of silly and obnoxious? Yeah. But it's just Jack being Jack.
I was kind of hoping The Raconteurs would get back together at some point. Jack and Brendan Benson were great frontmen and Pat Keeler was, at least to me, his best drummer in any band. Carla Azar was a very close second.
I'm still hoping. Seems like one of those things where if the timing worked out for all of them it could happen.
I hope so, though I get the impression that Jack is to into himself at the moment to share the spotlight.
Man, they aren't joking when they say smart phones are crippling people. If you can't go a few hr without your phone maybe you should just stay home. All the time.

I agree with this to an extent to, but for me it all about true emergencies. If I have the tools, why would I not want to be notified of a death, or fire, or hospitalization, or catastrophic emergency. That like saying Missile Defense Notification systems are making people week to missile attacks because they want to be notified if one happens.
I go to at least a show a week usually. I may take one picture. I don't use my phone. I do get the counter arguments.
I don't really care about the phone thing and I love Jack White, but if he really cares that much it seems pretty counter-intuitive to be playing a bunch of festivals where it'll be basically unenforceable and there will probably be a lot more casual fans seeing him.
Jack White: solving the dilemma of tech addiction one bearded white dude who likes guitars at a time
Jack didn't start this. Alicia keys, the Lumineers, Chris rock, Dave Chappelle, guns and roses and others have all done this before. I look forward to a show where people aren't on their phone or taking videos forever in front of me.

I like that this is getting way more press attention than any of those artists because it fits so well into the narrative of Jack White the Stodgy Old Ass

I admittedly haven't read the whole thread, so I don't know your situation. So you have kids, are you really tbat paranoid that something is going to happen to them in that couple hrs? Chill out dude, they'll be fine.
I like to go to a ton of shows with a wide variety of different types of music, and due to that for some shows I can often not get a group, or even a second person, to roll with me to the show. During the music it doesnt matter at all because thats the same no matter what, but the waiting between acts for 30-45 minutes by yourself and without a phone would really fucking suck.
Can't ban phones at Gov Ball I assume? If so, I think it'd be hilarious if everyone agreed to hold up their phones for the entirety of one song just to see Jack throw an absolute fit.
wish i was surprised that the man partly responsible for the vinyl resurgence was a pushover who blames ~millennials and their cell phones hurr durr~ for everything. but i am not

I think it's pretty common for one to worry about their child when in care of others. A night out is far more difficult with a child. Having that added reassurance of an open line of communication makes those nights a lot less stressful.

Whole point of that analogy was to say that I am not paranoid about something happening but if I have to tools to be notified in the even something does, why would I not want to use them? I'm done with the arguments. Enjoys the shows.

Seems as if you are mostly in a debate with people without children, but I feel you, man.

concerts are actually incredibly risky to go to, especially if you're young and/or a girl. ive had instances at shows where creeps would hit on me and i would pretend like im getting a call on my phone in order to get away from them

I mean, I get it, but I don't have kids. It seems like it would stress me out more to be constantly checking in on them. Your phone is still available if there's an emergency. It's fine. Chill.

It's not really a narrative.
He's obviously like that to some degree, but music media has a particular obsession with blowing up that aspect of his personality
