I think it's pretty common for one to worry about their child when in care of others. A night out is far more difficult with a child. Having that added reassurance of an open line of communication makes those nights a lot less stressful.
I've been annoyed by someone taking pictures at a show, but not enough to ban cell phones. I'm a fucking adult after all.
Good point. That's not the only reason though. Sometimes it's about not letting a recording of a song get out before you are finished working on it. Testing out new material for a band or stand up comic that will eventually go on an album/special. Also, the artists themselves have complained about the lack of intimate shows when they look out and all they see are screens. The yondr articles have quotes/examples from Beyonce and Adele criticizing fans for their concert etiquette. If this story was about Beyonce and not Jack White I feel the response would be slightly different.
I get why it bothers some people. Totally get the emergency thing as well. I just personally think I'd enjoy a show more with something like this but I have yet to experience it so maybe I'd change my mind.
I remember at a David Cross show for his make America great comedy tour they were extremely strict about cell phones (because this material was going to be released as a special after the tour). I got why they told everyone not to take their phones out at all and warned us repeatedly. Then when the show started and they were kicking people out for checking the time or texts I started thinking if this is the solution then people are going to be really pissed at future shows.
I admittedly haven't read the whole thread, so I don't know your situation. So you have kids, are you really tbat paranoid that something is going to happen to them in that couple hrs? Chill out dude, they'll be fine.
concerts are actually incredibly risky to go to, especially if you're young and/or a girl. ive had instances at shows where creeps would hit on me and i would pretend like im getting a call on my phone in order to get away from them

But wouldn't the line of communication still be open? Leave the vibrate and ringtone on (while in the pouch) and if someone reaches out for an emergency you hear/feel it and walk to the lobby. If it's a call you likely wouldn't be able to hear what someone is saying when in front of music.
Of course text messages would make it more annoying...if you leave to check a text and see it's just some dumb, unimportant thing and now you need to get back to your spot.
There's also the issue of losing/finding friends in the crowd. Maybe not so much for seated venues but GA could be a nightmare.
Basically theres positive and negatives and I agree this isn't the ideal solution. I know there was some talk a while ago about some sensor/tool thing that would be able to disable smartphone cameras (but not the phone entirely) which seems like it would be better. Though doesn't solve the issue of audio recordings.
Either way, it doesn't bother me much (yet...still have to try it) but I see the definite negatives for people who have different situations than myself. Ideally people would just not be dumb at shows.
See if someone is trying out new material or doing a promo run I get it, but this music will be out by then.
I just feel like it's more about Jack's pompous personality.
Could be. He's definitely a divisive guy but I do think a part of it is for the fans to have a better experience show-wise but not addressing the fans who want the comfort of having fast and easy communication. Part of it could just be him being weird/ego.
Think there's also a matter of him releasing a lot of live recordings for the vault so that could be a potential reason for protecting the audio.
Anyone ever seen Dirty Projectors live before? Any good?
Watched their set at Pitchfork (which I think was one of their first since the restructuring of the band), it was pretty disastrous, there were points when the band was quite obviously out of sync with each other among other things. I wouldn’t go out of my way to see them at all.

I heard Dave used to be pretty intense about rehearsing, prior to the restructuring at least, so that’s a shame.
One of my favorite shows was them and Owen Pallett in 2010. Really tight band and they played Knotty Pine.
Well hopefully they have gotten it back together in a year. Never seen them before.
Yeah, I saw them on the Swing Lo Magellan tour, back when Amber Coffman was in the band, and it was great. Obviously, they're a different band, now, so I don't know what the experience will be like vs. what I saw. I dug their last record, though, so I'm definitely going to check them out at GovBall barring a major conflict.

Hit or miss it seems. Saw then in 2009 open for TV On The Radio at Summerstage and they were great. They were pretty good at MHOW in 2012 but then saw them a few months later at Made in America and seemed to be really disjointed and unenthusiastic. I chalked that up to it being an odd festival for them to be playing at though.
That clashfinder really enforces how awful Saturday and Sunday are at this thing, would definitely get a day ticket for that Friday though if I was in the area.
I think if Cut Copy did an aftershow I'd see Manchester Orchestra instead of them at the actual fest if that was the schedule. Especially if it's an earlier set and it's not dark yet.
