Totally. I guess my concern is just that Sunday's relatively small draw is going to send Founders the message that there's no profit in the genres that were featured that day, and that we'll see them shying away from it, now.
Guess we'll find out in January. I think Tool at the top was kind of a stretch. I have faith they can come up with a happy medium that works for all.
Totally. They kind of fit into that same category like Phoenix. Theyd be a good alternate to play at the same time as a big hip hop name. Either way I think the crowd would be pretty thin for them.
Gah, I find that so depressing, even as I know you're absolutely right. It's more just that GovBall is moving away from my tastes so much because I'm old. Someone in GovBall reddit posted a "Which year's lineup was the best" post, and looking back at, like, 2014, it was indie rock bands all the way down (yes, with lots of other stuff mixed in, but an LCD Soundsystem would have fit perfectly on that bill). Now, we're talking about one of the biggest indie rock bands around not even being able to draw opposite a headliner.
Sigh. Rush was right when they asked time to stand still. OH GOD I'M QUOTING RUSH I'M EVEN OLDER THAN I THOUGHT.
Eh, I'll be 34 by next year's Gov Ball and I still find myself showing up early to catch acts I like. Due to sheer exhaustion, I didn't make it time for Barns Courtney, Mondo Cozmo or The Orwells on Sun which I am a bit sad about now. The fest might skew more EDM/hip-hop but I imagine there will still be acts I'm interested in. Meadows, on the other hand...

I still find that booking so peculiar. When they did the Reddit AMA in 2016, they said Tool was also available that year but "Didn't fit the demographic". Not sure why they changed their attitude a year later with no new album out.

I have to wonder if the Boston Calling booking and the rest of Tool's east coast tour came as a surprise. They certainly diminished the GovBall date and reduced the amount of Tool fans who would come out for it. I mean, when it was announced, it was Tool's first east coast show in 8 years and a rare chance to see them on this side of the country. Once all those other slots were announced, it became one of just multiple chances, and a lot of Tool fans - at least, based on what I'm reading online - opted for stand-alone shows in, like, Rochester.
I dunno. It's a chicken-or-egg question, I guess, but the booking makes a lot more sense if it wasn't expected that the band would book a full regional tour.

I think these lineups also speak to where we're at musically. Hip hop and R&B seem to be breaking away as the most popular genre by far with pop EDM not far behind, and I think the people booking these fests recognize that. Coachella, Lolla, and Bonnaroo are not the fests they once were (not that I personally know but looking at past lineups you can see how they've changed,) though those who grew up with these fests may long for those days.
Is Travis Scott a second liner, closing the Outdoor at Coachella? I don't think so, but he's popular as fuck. Should Marshmello be so high up on all these posters AND closing the Sahara? Probably not, but he's popular as fuck. Is Tory Lanez a fourth liner? Absolutely not to me, yet here we are.
This is not to say this is all music festivals are because alternative and indie acts still make up the majority of most lineups. However I do think we're seeing a major shift from there being only a handful of these hip hop and EDM acts, to them making up near 40% of these lineups. Whether we like it or not, I think this trend holds steady. As long as the fests keep booking quality and at least try to stay away from booking the Marshmellos, Chainsmokers, and Twenty One Pilots of the world, we gon be alright

100%. Honestly, I am surprised it took this long for the audience to turn over and trends to change. When I think back to when I was a kid, what was popular musically in 1995 was really different than what was popular in 2000.
Here we are in 2017, and a lot of what was popular around 2012 in the first half of this decade; is still lingering a bit, but that's mostly just because the kids coming of age now listened to that stuff growing up and have not yet had an opportunity to see it a million times like us oldies have. Meanwhile, the newer trendier acts that completely turn off the older crowd are drawing in the biggest audiences. Times they change.
The most badass, bumping, hype, theatrical and explosively produced indie/alt/rock show crowds are no where near as "lit" ad what is being produced at a Travis Scott, Marshmello, DJ Khaled show.
That Khaled coachella stream may have been the worst musically put together and least entertaining act I have ever seen, and may have also been the absolute wildest crowd I've seen in last 10 years since old Woodstock videos.
Do I, or most of us, want to be in those crowds? Fuck no, but we are an anomaly to what we think is popular, selling and worthwhile to book.

I mean should Datsik have closed the Sahara 5 years ago? Probably not, but as said, trends change. Coachella may have acts like Travis Scott (which is fine), but they still have entire stages dedicated to niche acts. They have really mastered the art of spreading the love and booking something for everyone. Meanwhile Bonnaroo played heavy on the stuff like you mentioned last and it's obviously not the same festival.
I think the only mistake Govball made this year was not booking more acts in the Tool-fan wheelhouse. Air and Avalanches are old, sure, but still play to a different base.

To those who know these things, are Rap and EDM acts cheaper to book as well compared to a similar Rock/Alt act? My thought process has always been that since its only 1 or 2 dudes up there and the production is often less, that these acts would be cheaper for the fest.

So I'm sitting at LAX waiting for a flight (only 4 more hours due to a delay FML) and I thought I'd share my thoughts on my first Coachella while it's all still relatively fresh in my mind.
Gross hard pass. Average age of this thing may go down to 12.
that would actually get me pretty stoked. Loved Rihannas last album. Love Kendrick. Love Arctic Monkeys. Kind of like Odesza, and they just announced they are headlining a Barclays show.

I like Rihanna's music, but I was pretty underwhelmed by her performance at Global Citizens last year. She killed it on "Stay" to open but spent the rest of the set mostly wandering around the stage, with a lot of pre-recorded vocal tracks in place of actually singing. It was really underwhelming.
...especially since she was following Kendrick, who fucking owned everything. I hope you're right about that one.
Also, I'm currently listening to Portugal. The Man's set from Bonnaroo this year, and I hope they end up on GovBall 2018's bill, somewhere. They're certainly nowhere near a headliner, but I could see them crushing a mid-day or sunset set.

I actually really enjoyed Rihanna at Global Citizen ha. Consideration has been one of my favorite songs over the last year and sounded pretty incredible live. I also wasn't expecting her to play Same Ol Mistakes and that was kind of a big highlight for me... But I will also admit that by the time she came on I was pretty hammered/stoned so I might have enjoyed anyone who was on that stage. But I still have really fond memories of that show.
Rihanna and Kendrick, if Founders can pull that, would get me back to Randall's Island in a heartbeat. I don't see how they worsen the obnoxious teen problem, either. Maybe pre-Rated R Rihanna, but today she has near universal appeal and I think she's #2 behind only Beyonce. It's also about time Gov Ball has a woman close the main and if it's not Bey, who's better? Regarding Kendrick, there's literally zero argument against the best rapper in the game right now. Haven't listened to Arctic Monkeys or Odesza.

That surprises me. Def get in on Arctic Monkeys; they are pretty amazing.

Rihanna was really really good at Made in America, ANTI is a great album and is super live.
