Just noticed the Shawn Mendes add...wtf? Are fests now actively seeking out generic pop acts? Can we expect to see Ariana Grande, Demi Lovato, Ed Sheeran on lineups now?
Yes. See also Camila Cabello at Lollapalooza. It's the way of the future. And the future looks bleak.
Or, see Beyonce's performance at Coachella for evidence that pop stars at music festivals are not always a bad thing.
We survived the festival landscape being transformed by mostly garbage EDM music. It's not even much of an exaggeration to say that that genre is what popularized and sustained many of the major festivals in the US. Lolla, Roo, and Coachella all have stages entirely dedicated to it.
The future will be fine. Shawn Mendes isn't going to ruin anything.

The explosion of EDM in America was around the same time that festivals started to become more and more popular. We're in a different phase now, as far as majors go. I'm not dissing popstars and their fans, but I don't see how trying to cater to every normie out there is going to lead to a more qualitative festival experience.

Not a Beyonce fan, talented but not my thing. Just dreading the day when the major fests look even more Top 40 than they already are.
And wait, an ex Fifth Harmony member is at Lollapalooza?

I keep forgetting that DRAM really did a song with Neil Young. It just popped up on my daily playlist and I did a double take and then realized I heard it before.
Revisiting the Yeah Yeah Yeah's catalog. Will be psyched if they completely ignore their 2013 release (did nothing for me) but the other 3 records are still total gems. Looking forward to that set even if attendance will likely be a bit dismal.

Despair is a great song! But yeah that album was pretty weak.

I don't think attendance will be that dismal. It's an older skewing day even with Post Malone and Shawn Mendes. And The Strokes always pack the main stage when the play Gov Ball. I know they're a much bigger deal, but that early-2000's Meet Me In The Bathroom nostalgia is still pretty high and NYC loves YYY's clearly by their Kings Theater show selling out in minutes.
I just wanted to drop a quick promo for Middle Kids who are playing early Sunday. Their debut full length drops this Friday and everything I've heard has been quite enjoyable

Edge of Town is such a fun song, never really dove into the rest of their stuff though.

I back this promo, looking forward to seeing them. Also, does anyone know what time gates open usually? I've never shown up at the VERY beginning but I want to catch Alice Merton who goes on at 12:15 on Sun. Is there usually a huge line that forms beforehand?

Sunday Opening usually features some of the shortest lines of the weekend.

I'm going to say that if you get to the gate by noon on Sunday, you should be fine, especially if you're going right to the stage (i.e., you don't need to stop by a locker, or anything).
I keep seeing posts promoting Friday on social media fees which makes me think that day isn't selling as well as the other two (makes sense, since it's more of the "old people" day).

Its targeted towards you, ya old man . I am seeing mostly Sunday on mine lol.

Haha aren't we only a few years apart? I'm 35 in Nov. Either way, stoked for Friday though not sure what to do about the Jack White v. James Blake conflict. Normally it'd be JW hands down but I just saw him tear down the Warsaw in Mar and haven't seen JB since Webster Hall in 2016.

I am 31 years old and spring chicken sir. Stop trying to make me have dinner at 4pm!
You can split the sets in half. Its not too difficult. I did that with Strokes and Robyn a few years back.

Interesting - the "low ticket warning" e-mail we got this year says only two single-day GA passes are close to selling out, at this point...and "close," this year, means 2,394 left for Saturday and 1,973 left for Sunday. By comparison, last year's similar e-mail at this time had only 749 tickets left for Friday, and 1,412 left for Saturday.
I'm curious to see how this plays out, sales-wise. First, that there's no mention of Friday makes me think that it might be the Sunday '17 of this year's festival, which kind of surprised me - I know Jack White and YYYs are geared towards us olds, but I thought Post Malone and the Shawn Mendes addition would pump some life into it for the kids, and that Saturday would end up being the weakest-selling day, overall. Shows what I know. Second, it definitely seems like overall sales are down, although I'd certainly attribute that more to the overall down year in festivals than anything GovBall might be doing or not doing. And, I'm guessing that, whatever happens this year, GovBall's going to be fine, especially if the rumors about this being the last year of Panorama are true.
(In other news, I'm way overanalyzing all of this as a means of escapism from a shitty work day and the soul-crushingly depressing state of the world. Don't mind me)

Gov Ball definitely looks to be one of the safest festivals in this current festival climate. They've got a solid brand at this point.

If Post Malone and Jack White switched spots on the poster I think tickets would be moving a lot quicker. Post has a summer tour that is 97% sold out, averaging about 20k per city...where as, Jack White has tickets selling for under face value on the secondary market in cities like Rochester, Toronto, Vancouver, San Diego, and London.
