^^^John Balke has released a number of terrifically weird ambient/world albums on ECM—Siwan was my favorite album of 2009. Susan Alcorn is a Baltimore native, and I saw her a couple different times at the free improv festival High Zero. Both will be shows worth seeing. Don't know anything about Cleek Schrey.
Bad news, my friends: I'm out this year. We got hit with a couple unwelcome financial surprises, and this is one loop on the belt we gotta tighten.
Have too much fun, and when you see ol' Capps around, nag him about booking Zorn in 2019 for your pal Steveternal.
Sad but understandable. I keep going back and forth as to if this is worth me being gone for 4 days and spending 20 hours in the car by myself. Ultimately, it is but if I was strapped for cash, I wouldn’t feel too bad.

Guys, I need someone to tell me I’m crazy.
A few weeks ago my family was involved in an accident that destroyed the rear end of my car. Fortunately, no one was injured (though we did go to the hospital to make sure the twins were okay). Insurance is gonna cover the damage minus the $500 deductible. That’s the money I had saved up for BE.
This line-up isn’t doing it for me as much in years past. I’ve seen the vast majority of things I’m stoked for. Really only GAS is the one that hurts.
Should I be an adult and skip the festival or do the festival and worry about it later?
I should note that if I do skip it, I’m doing Moogfest.

The way you phrase this makes me think you already know the answer. I'll totes send you pictures.

I have total faith that the overall event will transcend my initial underwhelmed reaction, but I'm with you. On paper, this has been the least "ooooooh, I never thought I'd see..." year yet. Alhough I'm definitely looking forward to seeing Galás, Molina, Gibson, Taborn, Jaga Jazzist, and others (and am always excited to see GY!BE). I just wish there had been a couple of more "No F'n Way" acts added, a'la Silver Apples, The Necks, Outside the Dream Syndicate, Musica Elettronica Viva (and yes, I know that's an extremely subjective call). But again, I'm always attracted to Big Ears because of artists a, b, and c... and leave thinking the absolute best parts of the festival were artists x, y, and z.

I'm really sorry to hear about that, and thank God every one is OK. Doing the adult thing is difficult, and of course I can empathize with you. You and I, we'll make our grand return to BE in 2019.

From today's e-mail:
"Starting next week, we will reveal surprise additions to the lineup along with details of dozens of special performances. We’ll unveil this year’s extraordinary film program and an exciting program of talks and discussions throughout the weekend. Very special culinary opportunities are in the works, along with beer and wine tastings. There will be art exhibitions…installations…and did we mention guided meditations each morning? The 12 hour drone?
Yes, we’ll also be sharing the details of who’s playing what day and making daily passes available for those who can’t be with us for the full weekend. The detailed schedule will be unveiled in early February."

New addition: David Hidalgo & Mark Ribot
"Vocal and guitar force David Hidalgo pairs up with awe-inspiring guitarist Marc Ribot for a musical excursion across the borders between cultures, styles, and genres to form the perfect preparation for this ambitious new project. Together they have forged a unique partnership where immigrant neighborhoods meet intellectual nuance – creating truly new music to stir your heart, challenge your head, and move your body."

Add Mark Ribot's Ceramic Dog!
"Marc Ribot's Ceramic Dog is a free punk/funk/experimental collective featuring Ribot and two of the best young players on the New York and California underground improv/experimental rock scene: Shahzad Ismaily (bass and electronics) and Ches Smith (drums)."

With Shahzad Ismaily playing in Ceramic Dog, that’s a step closer to EX EYE.
Anyone mind throwing out a top five? Three if that's too much?
In alphabetical:
Algiers GYBE Jenny Hval Kelly Lee Owens Lightning Bolt
For you, I would most suggest Algiers. For the rest of the lineup, I think you could easily get behind Bela Fleck and Abigail Washburn, Julie Byrne, Kid Koala, Marc Ribot's Ceramic Dog, Medeski Martin & Wood, Rostam, Sam Amidon and Steve Gunn & The Black Twig Pickers.

Hadn't heard of Julie Bryne. Thanks. I've seen everyone else except Rostam and Black Twig Pickers. I don't really like bluegrass, but I am excited to see what BIG EARS Bela Fleck will be.

Here's the news about Juana Molina dropping out:
"Juana Molina was offered the opportunity to open for Depeche Mode on their South American tour and, understandably, has accepted the offer. Sadly for us, this means she has cancelled her planned performance for Big Ears 2018. Hopefully, we’ll be able to entice her to a future edition of Big Ears."

She was a top 5 pick for me
I can't say I blame her. That's a big tour opportunity. Hopefully 2019.
