I’m still processing but I did have fun. My problem’s are less of the festival and more of me coming to grips with bad decisions I left behind some 11 years ago and probably should have left them there.
GY!BE transcended. Jessica Moss was incredible. Suuns new songs sound better fleshed out than on that record.
I know a guy that smoked a SHIT TON of hash and got the fuck down to Jerry Douglas Band.
I’ll have more thoughts later this week after I catch up with life.
Oh and Kelly Lee Owens was the best thing I saw all weekend. Totes blown away with that performance.
This is the correct answer. I think everyone in our group left during Four Tet because of her show.
I don't have a full review thought out for the weekend, but here are the random thoughts. Seeing Bela Fleck and Abigail Washburn in a hundred person venue was pretty special. Susanna and Bonnie Prince Billy duets are some of my new favorite things. Rostam's set was really pretty and translated better live than I expected. I didn't see Jagga Jazzist, but I heard several glowing reviews throughout the weekend. GAS at midnight in the Tennessee was a bad, bad idea. Godspeed playing Slow Riot was amazing. Lightning Bolt is ridiculous. Their drummer sound checks with the same level of insanity as the live show. Their merch guy was selling cat parody shirts of the body merch. He said marcoolio was the first person to get the joke. The lady actually had a good time Saturday thanks to the influx of folk/americana. I don't usually talk to guys at other urinals when I'm in the bathroom if they try to stay conversation with me, but if it's Ashley Capps, I'll make an exception.

I can't speak for Dave Maynar, but I, and all of those around me, were having a lot of trouble staying awake
This. End of the day. All seated. The Tennessee has comfortable seats for a theater. Super dark. Peaceful visuals. garageland made it about thirty seconds before nodding off. I left after about twenty because I was fading out and worried about being able to drive home.
Also the matter of how I had been day drinking all day without any other means of support.
I left GAS about halfway thru to go back to Teknox because of how drowsy his performance was making me. To be fair I should have anticipated this and you couldn't ask for a better venue for that variety of ambient. I'm glad that I finally got the chance to see one of the Kompakt label artists live. It would have been perfect to see GAS on Saturday night prior to doing the 12 13 hour drone (my favorite experience of the whole festival imo).
I'll follow up with another post with my thoughts and some pics/videos after I get the chance to go thru them. Overall the experience was phenomenal between the location and the sheer diversity of "wackadoo"/avant-garde music+art+film spread across all 4 days. I see Big Ears as the spiritual evolution of what Ashley Capps did with Moogfest '10-'12 + MOEMS '13. At least that's what I sensed while roaming the cozy confines of downtown Knoxville.
Oh yeah, the fire alarm went off around 4am (hour 6) during the drone session due to a very functional smoke machine and little ventilation (aka it was hazy as fuck in there). It was pretty surreal and it took a few mins before everyone realized that this wasn't a part of the sound progression.
Took about 45 mins for the alarm to end even though they let us back in about 15 mins after we evacuated. That being said, whoever was on drone deck managed to segway back into the gentle grooves almost seamlessly.

I decided that I was sleeping after German dude got pissy about where we were sitting. I know he was trying to help give us an experience but nobody tells me where I can and can’t nap.
E: Favorite non musical moments came with wearing a studded belt and securities faces after wanding me for the umteenth million time.
Totes different demographic. Plus, I walked at least 13.5 miles each day AND had comfortable seats for the show. The only thing they could have done that was more inviting would have been to pass out a pillow and vouchers for warm milk.
Yes. Also great, she was entertaining in a much funner way than I expected. Near the end of her set, she thanked everyone for coming out and said it had been a pleasure. She then stated that maybe it was too early to say that because a lot could happen in the six minutes left in her set, "The roof can cave in. The screens could fall off the wall." She then began her last song. About a line and a half into it, her mic cord falls out. She looks at the cord on the floor then us then back at the cord, quickly picks it up and puts it back in. At the end of the song, she says, "I was asking for that, wasn't I? Well, at least it wasn't the ceiling. Everyone survived. When people ask you how Jenny Hval was, tell them that everyone survived." I also give her bonus points because I saw her at multiple shows on Thursday and Friday.
I don't think so, but I could be wrong. Not 100% on their whole catalog.

I don't think he was being pissy. I think he was just confused that we didn't get up. Once again, I blame the hour. If the same thing would have happened at 2pm, we would have at least given him a better response than "Cool" and blank stares.
I forgot the ladyfriend quotes. I made a Big Ears mistake and took her to Cleek Schrey & David Behrman just because I saw "fiddle" when I was blowing through the descriptions. As should be expected, it was experimental fiddle. She is not a fan of experimental. Her reviews of the one piece we stayed for were, "That wasn't fiddle. That was bullshit." and "It sounded like a violin died, and they made it play at its own funeral."

In other words, it was chill and we survived. 'Nuff said.
My Big Ears week ended with Ceramic Dog here in town. It would have been a great show had they not canceled. Makes me sad I didn’t take that set more seriously in Knoxville.
Already looking forward to a re-do in 2019. I’m bringing Mrs. GL to keep me straight, too.
E: Listening to the new singles from the upcoming album has me even more sad.
I mistook the song “Fuck La Migra” for “Fuck A Libra”. Being a libra, I took that as sign the song was about me.

I saw a pic from the Asheville show where the drummer had bled all over the drums. That got my attention.

Which is pretty amazing as he’s like the most quiet reserved dude ever. I didn’t see that but that makes sense as to why it was canceled. I did make it out to University of Richmond for the Maria Chavez soundscape. Hence me getting home, yet again, at 3 am.
Ceramic Dog has more in common with punk than 99% of the bands that call themselves punk these days.

I don't know much about them other than they've played with Secret Chiefs 3 and with Carla fron Sleepytime Gorilla Museum.
