I normally am too wiped out for the late shows, any advice on how to rally after 11 hrs at a festival(legally)? Asking for a 38 yr old dad who doesn't stay up late as he used to....
Don't drink during the day. Iced coffee or a 5-hour energy before the headliner.
Crap you said legally. As a 43 year old man, drinking heavily and hanging out with younger people sometimes works. Otherwise, show up late in the day and nap under a tree during sets you don't necessarily love. Pick your battles
Late nights at Shaky Knees are rough to make it through especially if the weather isn't ideal. I agree that taking it easy during shows you're not excited about is a good help.
Didn't even think about Atlanta humidity.
If you're an old, and your kids won't starve for it, get vip and take advantage of any air-conditioned tents. Old people dig A/C. Plus you can usually get better drinks in VIP and chairs and such (along with getting closer to the stage without teens swarming on you)
Vip is fairly cheap for this. That's the way I'm going

I was thinking more about straight rain. Several of us got drenched during the Atlantic Station year then went to Deer Tick. It was a sad, sad affair. I think bacon may have been the only one who didn't look like they actively wanted to die.

I'd really like to see deer tick soon. The 2 times I've seen them were both deervana shows, which I have zero complaints about, but...
Listening to as many undercard artists as possible and I can say I'm in love with the artists. This might be my favorite year of Shaky yet.
Excluding the headliners, really excited for: David Byrne Fleet Foxes TWoD Nate Rateliff Matt and Kim Franz Ferdinand Jimmy Eat World Black Rebel Motorcycle Club Basement Bully Lukas Nelson Mikky Ekko

Yes. Get on board the BRMC hype train.
Just like Wolf Parade last year, been listening to them since I was a freshman in highschool, never thought I'd actually get to see them live
They're separately ticketed after shows at venues in town. They start at eleven or so if memory serves. Most will be bands that are playing the festival, but there are always a couple that aren't.

just listened to Greta Van Fleet. holy shit. I hope they have a late night show cos I'm there in a heartbeat. rock ain't dead
"Hey guys! i've got a great idea for a band! What if we sounded like a significantly less good version of Led Zeppelin and brought literally nothing new or original to the table?"

Oh man, I forgot they did those kickoff shows. And I took an extra day off ahead of the fest this year so I can be Atlanta the night before, so if we could get a Japandroids set with Torres or Bully that'd be a great way to start the fest.

It's not my favorite lineup ever but I said to my wife this may be my favorite top 6/7 ever.

When you say "day" do you mean wait until 3pm to drink or actually wait until sunset at 8pm. Lotta wiggle room in one's interpretation 😀

I'm usually the only one that wants to do late nights in our group. I'm about to be 38 and I have no problem doing it. Yea, I get tired but honestly, the music keeps me going, I don't need anything else.

While I resent being labled an "old", I have had to face reality the last 4 or 5 years. Weve done VIP early bird now 3 yrs in a row. Worth it for us for all the reasons you mentioned. I regretted not going to the late shows last year, friends who saw Car Seat Headrest said the late night show crushed the festival set (as expected). This is the year I finally do it. Just like this is the year I finally get there early enough for Songs For Kids

Be cautious how you plan your schedule. Doing 3/4 shows in a row to end the festival day with you being as close as possible to the act is not a great idea if you're going straight to a late show.
In 2015, I did late shows Friday & Saturday. On that Friday I went in for a few day shows, came back to the room for a nap and shower, and made back to the fest before The Strokes came on. Made a big difference.
BRMC have been one of my favorite bands for the last 15-16 years. Their albums are great and varied in style, but this is probably how I would recommend them to a friend. Howl -> BRMC -> Take Them On, On Your Own -> Beat The Devil's Tattoo -> Wrong Creatures (comes out on 1/12/18) -> Baby 81 -> Spectre At The Feast They have a show in NC on 5/4, so will be at SK on either Saturday or Sunday.
I have watched the line-ups for festival be released for a couple of years now, but have never gone. It was always close to APF/Levitation which was my go-to fest, but this line-up is really, really good, so I may try to make it this year if the stars align. There is plenty that i am unfamiliar with, but I would love a chance to see David Byrne again. The Black Angels & BJM are playing a show together for Levitation this year, so maybe they will do the same for a late show at SK.

Thanks man! And I'm the opposite. Shaky Knees is my go-to fest but I've always wanted to go to Levitation haha.
