While I resent being labled an "old", I have had to face reality the last 4 or 5 years. Weve done VIP early bird now 3 yrs in a row. Worth it for us for all the reasons you mentioned. I regretted not going to the late shows last year, friends who saw Car Seat Headrest said the late night show crushed the festival set (as expected). This is the year I finally do it. Just like this is the year I finally get there early enough for Songs For Kids
How far from the main stage is the VIP section, and how crowded does it get?
I can't speak for the layout at this year's SK, but the past 2 years at Centennial Park I never felt like it was too crowded, it wasn't until 6/7 pm each night that it started to feel crowded, but never overwhelming. The shaded areas with tables/seats were hard to come by as the day went on. The VIP sections for the smaller stages were nice, if not directly in front of stage, they were side stage a bit. You didn't have to leave your VIP section to get beer/wine, and you had your own bathrooms. The main stage was so damn far from the crowd that I didn't really venture to much up front. If they do a 2 story VIP structure again, be aware that they do headcounts, so the later in the day the harder it is to secure a spot up top You also risk losing your spot if you go back down the stairs to get a beer/go to bathroom, eat, etc but i never had to wait too long to go back up, there is always a steady stream of ppl going back and forth. Short answer: you can get as close to the stage as anyone else but if you want front row center stage you'll have to get into general population. I found that I could, with a few exceptions such as headliners and that 2nd line of acts, that we could just walk up and get up against the railing or within 5 feet of the railing.
just listened to Greta Van Fleet. holy shit. I hope they have a late night show cos I'm there in a heartbeat. rock ain't dead
"Hey guys! i've got a great idea for a band! What if we sounded like a significantly less good version of Led Zeppelin and brought literally nothing new or original to the table?"
Are you hating because you flat out don’t like them? Or just because they sound a bit like Zeppelin? I’d kill to have any kind of singing voice, let alone one like Robert Plant.

They're actually the first band ever who has ever tried to emulate Led Zeppelin's sound so this is cause for alarm and hate.

Speaking of bands at Shaky Knees that sound like other, more popular bands... Someone should let Taylor from Local Natives know that Sun Seeker is coming for him.

The dude's voice is insane. They're all talented. But they sound more than "a bit" like Zeppelin. They don't sound like anything else but Zeppelin.
Like I said before, I've got no problem with people listening to them and enjoying them. But to start praising them as any sort of "saviors of rock" strikes me as ridiculous. It's one step shy of people who comment on classic rock youtube videos about how shitty today's music is. If rock is in decline it's largely because the genre has failed to innovate.
A late night Black show 50/50 time slot but Black Angels last and BRMC first would even top that Viet Cong (I mean Disappearers now) and Cloud Nothings show last year.
thinking about doing this instead of firefly.. usually do vip for them, do i need it for here, or is ga fine?
It depends what your usual reason for doing GA is. VIP is a good idea here though because it rains most years and you’d get the benefit of a covered area.

i'm in my 30s, and haven't done GA at firefly since 2013, but did it for osheaga and i was fine. just trying to justify the price.. but good to know about the rain haha

It usually rains? Good to know. Anything happenin in the city of Atlanta for this? This is over at 11PM right? I'll probably wanna get sloppy and weird like I did in Austin for ACL.

I've never had a problem getting a good spot for shows and line for the entrance/bathrooms/water are always quick. I think the main perks for VIP are pre-paying for your beer and snacks and the lounge area. The VIP spot is elevated too so that might appeal to you. And the covered rain protection thing too.

The outdoor portion ends at 11. There are late night shows and ATL bars are open till 2:30. The venue is close to Edgewood Ave which is a big nightlife district as well as Poncey Highlands and Midtown.
If you want to get weird you should go to The Clermont.

And if you want to get really weird you should get a private dance at the Clermont

They've never canceled a day. I want to say 2014 had a pause in the music for an hour one day? But I might be thinking of Music Midtown.
The years it has rained it was a heavy shower or downpour. There's the possibility of thunderstorms around that time but it's never happened.
We haven't had rain the last two or three years though so it's now like 50% of Shaky Knees years have had rain. It's never affected my enjoyment of the fest though. Just bring a jacket and some boots or chacos.

Last year we thought they might have to cancel for a bit due to lightning but the rain itself hasn’t been horrendous since 2014. I don’t think anything was cancelled but a lot of people left

Oh wow I completely forgot about that.
Jim Dog, worth mentioning that you are allowed to exit and re-enter. So you could always run back to your hotel for shelter in case of inclement weather.
yeah, I've had some issues with a fest that was in the summer here that seeminly lost acts/canceled/moved location due to rain every year for the past 4. dfn didn't year 2, but this year we lost 30 minutes of nails.
its not something that would ruin the experience if it rained a little/had to wait a bit, but it is something I'm a little fatigued by.
