So what does everyone think about this year's line-up?
Decent. Has a lot I would like to see, in a location that's supposed to be top notch. I won't be attending because of logistics; but sounds like a good time.
What do you think?
I think if I were to apply a heat filter to this line up, the old cold spot would be the top line towards the right. But for the rest of the line-up, it has enough artists I like to warrant going. I've never understood wanting 99% of the line up to be artists you want to see. Realistically, even if you split set times, one can probably only successfully hit 60% of the line up in some hurried, ridiculous fashion. So when I see 2 artists I like next 2 I don't....that's great. So be it.
Logistically, though, I'm not sold with all the travel I'd have to do and PTO. In addition, I just saw Arcade Fire twice, including their arena show which was some of the best production I've seen from any band live. So with that said, the value diminishes a bit.
I agree w Todd. I think the truest way to rate a fest is to a view the line up like you've never seen any of the acts yet, adjust for location, programming, cost, and "vibe" and go from there. If this were my first fest, I'd have a fantastic damn time.
So what does everyone think about this year's line-up?
Hey cmack. I think it's a mix of things, but you already knew that. What do you think about it? You were talking about seriously going, and it's kind of a lot of the shit you listen to. I'm assuming you're looking to make that 19 hour drive to SE FL, right? Two of my kids are going (E went both previous years & K is going to go in '18) and C said he was content enough with this and the last couple of year's lineups to go to Okeechobee in 2019 but wasn't interested this year because he plans on going to Backwoods at Mulberry. Ooo Wooktronica!
Also, what's the word on Euphoria for 2018? Are you going and is it happening?
See above. I might go to Backwoods if April is clear. I like Wook music, I just don't look or act like a Wook.
Euphoria's twitter has been posting here and there but no word on the fest. I might do a day or so depending but Im not going to camp when I live a few minutes away. I kind of hope it finds itself a new location because the quarry is rather annoying. I heard last year was vastly improved with the parking, load in/load, ect though.
Word. I will actually be free the first weekend or two of April, but shit gets hectic after that. I'll be over that way for Memorial Day, but I'm willing to make an early year trip to Austin if they can return a similar lineup to 2016 with the slightly more obscure shit like Digital Tape Machine, Skydyed, PPPP, Broccoli Samurai and then that wild Juicy J set. I was disappointed to miss Disco Biscuits last year, as that was probably worth the day pass and 7 hour drive.
Okeechobee's lineup reminds me a lot of how Tennessee looks in this coaching search: Desperately ugly start, but you are rooting for a miracle Phase 2.
So what does everyone think about this year's line-up?
Poor headliners but the undercard is pretty interesting and there’s a few stuff I’d really be happy to see, not much that i haven’t seen before though. But it is a bit overpriced this year. Had a great time last year and loved the location but Phase two and so on is gonna have to be strong to get me back.
One method I usually do for fests is buy presales (when they’re cheap) and sell them if you hate the lineup (ie bonnaroo 2017) or enjoy a cheaper festival than everybody else. I bought these tickets for just barely north of 300 bucks.
So what does everyone think about this year's line-up?
For me personally it's definitely a let down and it has taken some convincing this year, especially with the financial aspect of it. It's a lot of money (tickets, car camping, 12 hour drive, etc) for for me not being a fan of most of the headliners (with the exception of nectar, seen him a couple of times). The undercards are the reason I'll be going though... Particularly Local Natives and Slightly Stupid among a few others. I spent my 30th birthday last year at Okee and had an absolute amazing time so I'm going to try to make the most of it this Okee too. There's been several times I've fallen in love with new bands while the headliners play at other fests and hoping this is the case this year. Cheers!
i remember last year when local natives wasnt a "get" on the HOF lineup.
?
Nobody mentioned them pro or con in the first couple of pages after the 2016 lineup release until juggernaut called them good. I didn't see anyone else loving or hating one way or the other which may have been your point.

If we are still comparing this to Hangout, I agree that SZA and .Paak are better than anything on the Okeechobee lineup... But that still leaves 2 days and how many hours to fill? This lineup is deeper, with more stuff I would at least enjoy.

I think that's exactly the point krisplettuce was making. When that's an artist people are using to say this lineup is worth it, you know it's rough
I love Local Natives but have somewhat devalued since their last record. I was pretty bored with their ACL show. I can see how people might be indifferent about seeing them at a festival at this point.

This. They were one of my favorite bands, absolutely loved seeing them at Bonnaroo in 2013 and then for their own headlining show in 2014. The new album took a lot of steam out of them, and I couldn't get into their Coachella set this year because it relied so heavily on songs from that album. Hopefully they go back to writing quality stuff.

Gotcha. He's way too attached to Hangout, but everybody loves him anyway. I only saw one comment about them today, so I guess he's being a little defensive.

Well Paak and St. Vincent are on one day and Kendrick and SZA are another. I can't see any one day of Okee being as good as either of those. I'd even enjoy seeing the Killers for the first time more than anything at the top of Okee's bill other than Arcade Fire.
Speaking of hours to fill, Okee is a 4 day festival. What are the three days without Arcade Fire going to look like in the evening? There isn't another headlining or even subheadlining show I'd be excited to see except Thievery Corp if that event counts. I really don't see what's so special about the Okeechobee undercard. It's sparse and what it's filled with isn't anything that gets me excited.
Also Slightly Stoopid play Florida like 8 times a year for not $350.

Launch,
This is what I have on .Paak. Musically, he's maybe the #4 or #5 best rapper (when he raps) on a light Okee rap lineup. He's not in the running for best singer when he sings, but he's decent. He might be #4 or #5 best drummer on the lineup. As I mentioned in another argument, he is fun to see, and their band is cool and as also noted, I've seen them multiple times. Fun, yeah. Slightly above average band for a young band? Yeah. Good drummer (particularly when he is playing jazz)? Sure. Fun personality? Absolutely and having fun playing. I could totally understand that "SZA and Paak" are your favorite two acts on the lineup if that's what you mean. I'm not big on R&B though I guess I'll take your recommendation on SZA (schedule/conflicts permitting) in March.
2 of the times I watched A.P & TFN was in person, and 2 of the times I watched them were on live streams. I'm going to have to go back and see what I thought after the two live shows..................
1) Buku 2016 - I gave them #10 on the Top 10 list so I was impressed. Comments were: After that was Anderson.Paak and the free nationals. That was a pretty great show that mixed rock and rap elements. I didn't "love" every song, but overall it was pretty good <--- Apparently I liked the gig but not all the music. I had rail.
2) Voodoo 2016 - I gave them #7 on the Top 10. Next up was a high energy Anderson.Paak and the Free Nationals set. This was the best I have seen them. (didn't note the costumes they came out in until a later post).
^^ Apparently I like them more than I realized. But I definitely stand by them being better than average though probably would be the low single numbers (8/9/10) for me at Okeechobee.

I can appreciate Krisp for sticking to what he likes and not just jumping on the same ole bandwagon of artists just to fit in. Also having met him, hes a good guy and I couldn't careless how much he annoys/trolls people here.
Regarding Local Natives, I agree with what has been said. The most recent album is lackluster aside from a select 2 or 3 songs. Their live show still seems pretty solid but I only caught half a set back in 2013 at ACL and most recently a show in Austin in 17 and somewhere else. THere seemed to be plenty of heartbreak regarding this new album and the direction it went on this forum.

Saw Local Natives twice on their recent tour, didn't get to see the at any festival. Live show is still good, but not a huge fan of their recent album. It's solid, but frankly their political slant got kind of annoying. I'll still regard their 2014 Firefly show as one of my favorites. I certainly wouldn't miss their set at Okee if I went.

Hangout and Okee have two different things going for em. Hangout has a couple good names that would theoretically get me there, but nothing to fill the time in between. Okee has some decent filler acts, stuff I’d definitely want to see if I went, but nothing marquee that’s worth any effort to go see.

This seems to just be a matter of taste, but for me Paak's music and songs are more interesting than any jamband on Okee's lineup. Are most jamband musicians talented? Of course. Do most of them make good music? No

I love Local Natives, I have seen them many times, a few at fests and a few at local shows. I would totally catch them again if they were at a festival I was at or if they came back to NOLA. I don't think the are the GOAT, but I enjoyed the last album and I don't care if I am the minority or if I have shitty music tastes.

Arcade Fire, Travis Scott, Khalid, Leon Bridges, Flaming Lips, Tipper, Big G, STS9, Local Natives, Gramatik, Thievery Corporation, Tycho, Sylvan Esso, Sofi Tukker, Lettuce, Ganja White Knight, Jai Wolf, Big Wild, Allah-Las, Nightmares on Wax, Chicano Batman, Hippo Campus, Turkuaz, The Districts, Clozee, Flamingosis. They have some smaller names I am not familiar with, thats without any research.
I think if you are into that "wookiedm"/jam type sound you will like this lineup. If you don't, I can totally see why this looks like trash to you.

I guess that's just it, I'm not into that type of music at all.
I kind of hope all the lineups are super bad this year. That way, I won't have FOMO since we are taking a festival hiatus. Feels bad to wish that bad fortune on everyone else though.

Different strokes. And yeah thats exactly it. This lineup is geared toward those Camp Bisco/Electric Forest type weirdos who wear grassroots hats.
I realized. But I definitely stand by them being better than average though probably would be the low single numbers (8/9/10) for me at Okeechobee.

Definitely a matter of taste, but I don't see this as a Jam fest. I've seen STS9 probably 18 times, and the Axe the Cables show this year is tied with Sigur Ros for #1 and ahead of U2, Radiohead, Foo Fighters, Kendrick, Foo Fighters, Jaz-Z, etc. else that I've seen this year. Of course that's a jazzier and more musical version of what they typically do.
I didn't see that much else jam on the lineup except Thievery sometimes gets thrown in there but I don't see them as jam. Lettuce is on there, and while they do play some pretty long songs, it's mostly just funk to me. Ditto for Cory Henry (former leader of Snarky Puppy) and Funk Apostles. Twiddle is definitely a jam band, and I'm not a huge fan though I don't hate or love them at this point and would be more of a pass-by set if there was no conflict. Maybe there's some jam on the undercard?
So maybe 4 or 5 jam or funk type acts on the lineup?
