I'm torn as to whether to commit to a blind early bird purchase for 2019. Last year, the blind early bird GA was around $140 or so, if memory serves, so it was worth the risk. This year, though, the price differential between blind early bird and regular onsale pricing was much narrower. Given that this festival never comes close to an immediate sellout, I'll likely wait until the lineup drop to see if I'm sufficiently interested to buy a three-day pass. If there aren't at least 10 acts I'd likely spend money upon to see live, I may wait until the daily lineups are announced.
I don't mind dealing with lousy weather for acts I love, but my resolve to stay on the grounds fades quickly when I have a more casual interest in who's left in the lineup on a given day. I could only make it through 55 minutes of Fleet Foxes 70 min. set, before the chilling wind on my damp hoodie started to make the set seem more like something to endure than enjoy. I had some passing interest in staying for Eminem, but I couldn't deal with spending another hour plus there. Two scoops of cookie dough at DO, and I was out of there. I've got to operate under the assumption that the weather will be lousy -- it usually is at Boston Calling -- and make my purchase accordingly.
There's always stuff I like in the lineup, except for 2016, but they haven't been booking as many acts that I love as they used to, so it makes sense for me to hang back on buying that wristband until I have some lineup intel.
He brought out Skylar Grey and another rapper who I did not catch the name of, but judging by the lack of phones in the air I don't think anyone super high profile.

I had an awesome time this weekend, Some shitty crowds Saturday and the weather yesterday was unfortunate, but the caliber of musical ability and creativity was high on this bill. I feel like next year's bill is going to be very rap focused based on sales for this weekend (Sunday was packed, probably twice as crowded as the other days), but hopefully there's still one good rock day that will warrant a trip up, or if it's hip hop/ RNB focused it will be quality acts like Janelle, Kendrick, Solange still has a set to make up.
Top 10 sets from the weekend
1) Fleet Foxes - The only thing improved by the rain, positively magical
2) QOTSA - Rocked so hard, the crowd was more turnt than Em's crowd in my opinion, plus "In My Head" was s fun "Surprise"
3)Oh Sees - That mosh pit better have been documented, beyond epic
4)Jack White - The way that band just switched songs out of the blue and mashes shit together is inspiring really great setlist too
5)St. Vincent - high art so tight
6)Pond - Nick Allbrook worked a crowd that was their for Eminem masterfully, and the visuals on the giant screen was cool. Their sound has also gotten so big since I saw them last year.
7)The Killers - The musical equivalent of a Hershey Chocolate bar, nothing mind blowing, but so sweet and enjoyable
8)The Decembrists - New songs sound way better live than on record, plus "Ben Franklin's song and Mariner's Revenge were two of the best songs from any band this weekend"
9) Zola Jesus - This was my big surprise this weekend, knew I'd like her had no idea how much, she has a freaking amazing voice, and put on quite the show considering how early she was in the day.
10)Royal Blood - Maybe should be higher, but the awful crowd detracted from my experience. They just melt my face off every time I see them.

People gotta put respek on Royce da 5'9 name.
Did he bring out Royce for the end? We left before the end so didn't see that. Was happy to catch him bring Royce out when he played Bonnaroo a few years back. Love me some Royce da 5'9".

I wasn't there but Fast Lane was on the setlist. I'm just assuming that's who it was based on that.

Pretty much my exact feelings on every set. Wasn't in the crowd for QOTSA or Royal Blood, but enjoyed both.
Was bummed Decemberists didn't fit in "Rusalka Rusalka" but was glad they did "Mariner's Revenge." And was glad Pond did "Man It Feels Like Space Again." Those are both bands strongest closing songs respectively, but not necessarily a given for festival sets.
Visuals on the screens made such a big impact for daytime sets. Those stages are so big that it's easy for bands like Alvvays or Big Thief to just get swallowed. If there was a way BC could get a tent stage somewhere it'd be a great move, but I don't think they could. What they COULD do is close the fucking gaps between the stages and the rails
I'm working on another full mock lineup to kick off next year's thread, but
Bruce Springsteen - Drake - Florence + The Machine
Springsteen's obviously the long shot, but my feeling is that they'll go with three relatively 'sure things' ticket sales-wise
After all of the criticism over three white guy acts as headliners, you can pretty much count on the following:
1) Rihanna, Madonna, or Florence + The Machine in one spot (Ruling out Taylor Swift and Beyonce, since they only play football stadiums now)
2) Childish Gambino, Kendrick Lamar, Kanye West, or Drake in another spot
3) White Guys With Guitars - Could be anyone who's big enough to fill that slot. I wouldn't be surprised if it turned out to be Metallica. I wouldn't be surprised if it turned out to be Chris Stapleton. (Yes, Metallica plays football stadiums, but they still do arenas, too.)
Lock for Red or Blue stage closer -- Pavement's 30th anniversary reunion tour. There's a lot of talk that they'll be getting back together again next year, as they did in 2010.

Top 5 1. Pond 2. Brockhampton 3. St Vincent 4. Tyler/The Killers 5. No lines for anything 99% of the time
I didn't go last year but my overall opinion of the festival is positive. I do agree with the getting a tent for small to mid size acts. It would provide a lot of shade and those bands wouldn't get swallowed up.

The criticism about the white male headliners is just from a tiny minority. But it makes sense that they would book acts such as the ones you mentioned, given that this edition did not sell out.

The Killers would have been a good choice if they hadn't played town less than six months earlier. Jack White may not have been a big enough draw to attract a lot of casual fans.

Logistics were darn near perfect this year. A few over-zealous security folk I saw complaints about on Twitter...no problems for me though. Food and bathrooms lines basically non-existent. I wonder if linking wristbands to credit cards just saves that much time for everyone....it was super convenient for me.
I didn't enjoy the IKEA lounge at all, but props to those who had a good time there. Cool that they did it, except when their DJ (though also Thundercat) was bleeding into Julien Baker's sound. My secret hope is that this weekend was a test run for that to become a smaller stage for bands, if not comparable to a small tent at Bonnaroo, then at least something like the Miller Lite stage or whatever they call it year to year. If nothing else, they could get more local bands on stage there, but maybe also just get a handful more national acts on the bill.
The only musical issue I had all weekend was Dirty Projector's bassist losing sound...not sure what happened. Otherwise, it seemed like they scheduled really well to make it convenient for people to see similar acts. For instance, I literally spent all day Sunday at the Blue Stage and didn't have any interest in anyone on Red/Green. (Except sort of Thundercat.)It seemed like conflicts were reduced as much as possible for most people. Otherwise, the only act that disappointed me was Big Thief...and I only got there for the last 15 minutes of their set, so that's probably on me.
1) The Killers---Brandon Flowers is a born showman. 2) The Decemberists 3) The National 4) Fleet Foxes 5) Dirty Projectors, even with sound issues HM) Field Report and Belly were also really enjoyable daytime surprises.
I hope next year continues the trend where I think "Yeah I don't live in Boston anymore, it would be a lot of time and money to trip up there for a tiring weekend," and then I absolutely have to buy tickets when the lineup drops. I guess it's really now setting in for me that BC can book headliners mostly on the same tier as Bonnaroo and Lollapalooza. I'm excited to see when they really book someone to break into the top tier of festivals. Wasn't in Radiohead in 06 that really launched Bonnaroo? Maybe Eminem was that and I'm just the wrong audience?
Welcome back Bonz, but I do not find it strange that your presence being requested in the Orgy thread and then you showing up, like it was the quacking Bonzai Bat Signal.

Just got back home so I’ll go through my festival.
Friday:
Perfume genius - didn’t really enjoy this show at all. I thought his new album was decent but none of the songs he played really drew me in.
Alex G - really really good set. He started out folky and got weirder as the set went on. The front man is pretty funny too.
Portugal - they always put on a really good show. You could tell most of the crowd only knew feel it still. Their new production is pretty great as well.
The national - wow. Simply amazing. This whole group is so talented and there wasn’t a bad moment in the set. The lead singer tripped into me when he was walking in the crowd and I almost fell over lol. Definitely want to catch them again.
The killers - meh. It wasn’t unenjoyable.
Overall Friday was really good. The national and Portugal really made the day worth it. I was planning to go to the Natalie Portman thing but heard it was kinda shitty.
Saturday:
Daniel Caesar - I enjoyed this set. He has a really good voice and his backing band is pretty good too. I was surprised how young the crowd was but everyone was pretty into it.
Royal blood - watched from afar. They put on their typical performance.
Brockhampton - glad I chose this over st Vincent because it seems like it’ll be their last show for a while. Even with all the drama they put on a a dumb lit set. Disappointed there wasn’t more moshing though.
St Vincent - last half was amazing. Such a tough conflict.
Queens - I know I said I was going Tyler but I changed my mind last minute (mostly to get a better spot for jack white). They rocked. I was surprised how many songs I knew besides the hits.
Jack white - the main reason I went to calling and he didn’t disappoint. The man is super talented and the setlist was perfect for my tastes. Wish there wasn’t a curfew because it seemed like he wanted to play longer.
Overall Saturday was probably my favorite day. Some people were complaining about the crowds but I didn’t run into any issues.
Sunday:
Thundercat - this was a crazy fun set. From start to finish I was really entertained. The drummer was really good and the bass licks were fantastic as expected.
The Decemberists - pretty decent. Nothing too special but it wasn’t bad by any means. Probably doesn’t help I don’t know much of their work.
Mike d - absolutely terrible. I can’t believe I endured 20 minutes of this. I could put on a better show set.
Fleet foxes - best set of the weekend. The rain made for some magical moments. The crowd here was imo the best of the weekend. Everyone was super engaged for this amazing show.
Eminem - wasn’t as bad as I was expecting. He played a little bit of everything which kept me entertained. His production was cool too. This was definitely the biggest crowd of the weekend.
While cold and crowded Sunday was pretty great. With the except of mike d this day couldn’t have gone better. Even with the crowds lines for food and restrooms were fast.
Overall:
I really enjoyed Boston calling and the city itself. It was my first time visiting so I did a lot of touristy things in the mornings. Taking the red line back to Quincy after the festival was a breeze.
The crowds were hit or miss but I didn’t have any major problems. Miles better than the Lolla crowd.
I loved the stage layout. It was super easy to get a decent spot from anywhere and the closeness of the green and red stage definitely worked in my favor for jack white. I just wish there was a quicker route between the blue stage and the main area.
I would go back to Boston calling if the lineup was good enough. It’s a long drive for me but this weekend was definitely worth it.
I was seriously considering doing this until I saw the price:
$210 for the "cheapest" opportunity to buy tickets? Next year is going to be fucking expensive.
EDIT: pretty sure people I know got their early birds for $140 or $150 this year.
I clicked on the link in the e-mail and didn't see any pricing on the Front Gate Ticket pages for GA and VIP (I didn't even bother checking platinum).
FWIW, I bought at the earliest opportunity last year and paid over $200 for 3 day GA.
My knee-jerk reaction is to buy tomorrow, but I should really just wait for the lineup or daily schedule. As much as I keep hoping that they'll have plenty of acts I like and love, like they did in 2014 and 2015, wishing doesn't make it so and I should really just hang tight and wait for January.
I just wish that Illinois would legalize marijuana now, so I could move to Chicago and have a festival season which extends beyond June 1. Right now, there's nothing for me to do with my festival energy until the January lineup drop.
