Why is Indy/McDaniels hiring assistants when McDaniels hadn't officially accepted the job yet?
That just seems like really getting ahead of yourself.
Think of it like a giant game of musical chairs. The music stops after each round of the playoffs. If you don't hire a coach that becomes available at the the time they become available then you may not get him at all and then you're scraping together a staff of the dregs. It's a fucked up system but I don't know how the NFL corrects it. Maybe don't allow hirings for any team until after the SB? I don't blame McDaniels for not wanting to work for Irsay. Just the fact that he verbally agreed, started assimilating a coaching staff and then reneged.

I thought he had verbally accepted and just not put pen to paper yet?
This is correct.
His agent (who also reps the Indy GM) fired him yesterday because of the way this went down.
Most of what I'm reading is about how shitty McD was to those assistants who had left other jobs/turned down other opportunities to be on his staff. It's awkward for them now because they are going to be forced on the new coach.
They do need to change the system so that a coach can officially accept a job even if they are still in a playoff run.

-agents getting their coaches to go to their gm's seems kind of shitty, makes it seem like they really didn't do their due diligence (even though this guy represents a ton of coaches).
-again, that's on Indy for hiring them early imo. to me the conventional wisdom seems to be get your Coach situation sorted out first, then hire the assistants.
-agreed
I still think it's bad, but he didn't have some awkward to look back on "I am the head coach of the Colts" presser, and it's not as bad as other exit's coaches have had.
Oh it was SO Philadelphia. And also the highlight of my day. The parade was pretty cool, but it was cold so my favorite part of the day was going to our friend's Airbnb and watching the ceremony live. That speech by Kelce is one of the greatest things I've ever heard.
I’ll be replaying that speech over and over as much as possible for the foreseeable future. When the parade went by us he wasn’t even on buses with everyone else, just walking along besides them. Anyone see the video of Doug one hand catching a beer someone threw to him from the street? What a day what a day
And instead of saying all of your goodbyes - let them know you realize that life goes fast - It's hard to make the good things last-you realize the sun doesn't go down - It's just an illusion caused by the world spinning round
Super jealous of everyone at the parade. I flew back to Austin on Monday and have finally recovered. Jason Kelce is a legend and I'll be doing my best to find a way to wear the Mummer'a outfit and grow a beard out like that for Halloween.

Havent posted or read this thread. Just wanted to say as a HUGE Eagles fan that the last two weeks have been magical. All three playoff games were great and the parade was just icing. Go Birds!

For the last year, Free Agency was an awesome time period where excitement would build around big name acquisitions. We are reaching a point where Free Agency sucks because we can't afford all of our talent. This year isn't so bad, but the next couple years will be brutal.
