Surprised they wouldn't just give substantially more time to the Record Company since they have that album coming out. Would think they could handle a 75 minute set more than Alice Merton has enough music to fill an hour. Alas.

That’s a pretty lazy move. I know the fest was struggling to move tickets this year, so not too surprised they didn’t put too much effort into finding a replacement.

yeah I mean, they did just drop out like 2 days ago. I'd say pretty low chances of getting a replacement to begin with. Add in lesser ticket sales...what's the point.

I’m not expecting to get anything out of this, but I just reached out to mt jam on Twitter. I just think it’s kind of ridiculous to lose two acts in two weeks and not add a replacement. I would even take a lower billed replacement ( I suggested Sheer Mag), I just want something or some form of acknowledgement.

Security is crazy checking vehicles on the way in car camping. On a good note started at the bottom of the mountain, so I think I win!?

Thoughts from day 1 : Sturgill, Portugal, and Jenny were all exceptional, I think the only band that could touch Sturgill's set is the TWOD tonight. I'm personally loving the small crowds I walked right up to Jenny Lewis' set today, and was very close, though I also thought Portugal had a pretty normal sized festival crowd. I'm also loving all the stage set ups (though a screen or two on the main would be nice), but watching Steve Gunn's set while sitting on a hay bail was delightful. If you haven't gotten Pad Thai yet from the Pad Thai place yet it's real yummy.

Agree wholeheartedly tho I’m excited for another set of Frasco today, TWOD, and alt-J. Crowds aren’t as barren so that’s great. Security is intense even at mountaintop.

Gonna try to stay up for felices tonight
I’m gonna try and stay up for Felices too, a piece of advice to whoever else is on here don’t waste your time with p funk unless you’re just trashed and want to have fun. His set at Pitchfork last year was embarrassing.

Day 2 favorite for us was The Record Company- they absolutely killed it on the big stage. They played the hits, new stuff from their album coming out this week, and shredded on several extended jams. They drew the most enthusiastic crowd of the day, and maybe one of the largest. They did an acoustic set in the VIP tent, too. We met lead vocal/guitarist/harp player Chris Vos on the walk behind the stage- what a cool guy- happy to chat, and seems to genuinely appreciate their fans.
Alice Merton is remarkably polished on her first festival circuit. She's on the poppier end of the MJ spectrum, but with a huge hit already under her belt, there's no telling how far she goes.
The War on Drugs played well, but didn't do most of the songs I'm familiar with and wanted to hear. I'm sure their fans in attendance liked ithe 90" set, though. Does anyone have the set list?
Today- Son Little, Mondo Cozmo, Jade Bird, Kurt Vile, Father John Misty and Jack Johnson- a fine festival day in my book. Perfect weather again, looking forward to a great day.

Quick Top 10 for me
1. Sturgill Simpson 2. Father John Misty 3. The War on Drugs 4. Andy Frasco (Thursday Night) 5. Jenny Lewis 6. Mondo Cozmo 7. Alt-J 8. Andy Frasco (Saturday) 9. Rag N Bone Man 10. The Record Company
Not many diaapointments. Crowd was okay, not as good as previous years with way more loud talkers even close to the stage. Crowds early in the day were pretty depressing.
Will be interested to see what happens with this next year. I’d assume it’s the weekend after Roo so 6/21-6/23. Will probably depend on the Woodstock 50th happening if we head back (or if this fest even happens). We heard a lot of complaints from people who wouldn’t have been there without presale or the deals they ran. I don’t think many of the older fans were too pleased with this lineup shift.
1) Father John Misty - Wasn't sure what to expect with this complex artist, but his dramatic vocal performance was incredible, and his 9-piece ensemble filled the stage and the mountain in a headliner kind of way. 2) Jack Johnson - an easy going, laid back fun set that was a nice way to end the fest. 3) Jade Bird - a breaking artist who has remarkable vocal and instrumental command, both with her band (Tap House) and solo acoustic (VIP tent).
Mondo Cozmo, Son Little, Kurt Vile, Sydney Worthley and John Craigie were also enjoyable sets.
OVERALL IMPRESSIONS:
- We also chatted with lots of other "experienced concert-goers", many of whom have been coming for years. Most liked what they'd seen, but were disappointed in the lack of classic/veteran rock acts like MJ's had in past years. They (and I) would like to see a few more acts, including a headliner or two, that appeal more to the baby-boomer/empty nester types.
- Attendance was certainly less than last year. Given how jammers like to spread themselves over the mountain, it was embarrassingly light closer to the stage until late afternoon. Dropoff was especially noticeable in the VIP areas, which cost 3 times GA- helping the bottom line.
- The new layout seemed to flow pretty well, and gave us reason to go to the Tap House (which we didn't last year) and enjoy craft beers. Paths from one stage to another are through vendor areas, hopefully resulting in more sales and helping cover costs.
If it's Mountain Jam's intent to compete with Firefly (same weekend) and Governor's Ball, I can't imagine them winning much of the New Jersey and NYC markets. On the other hand, the festival has so much to offer: - a beautiful setting that's easy to navigate. - a festival that's based on rock/alternative/indie, for those who don't care for EDM, rap and hip-hop. - a loyal (but shrinking) fan base that looks forward to coming to Hunter each year. - family-friendly atmosphere (just keep the kids away from Andy Frasco!).
Let's hope they bring in a couple more veteran, higher-profile acts next year. Look at the top four at the 2-day Bourbon and Beyond festival in Louisville: John Mayer, Lenny Kravitz, Sting, and Robert Plant (a MJ veteran)- even one of those would've greatly boosted the lineup. Here's to Mountain Jam continuing to offer a great "music with instruments" festival option here in the northeast!

I just don’t think this fest should be in the alternative/indie game. Enjoyable for me but not most locals. Think they should stick to jam/classic rock/folk.
Next year let me just say:
My Morning Jacket - The Avett Brothers - Bob Seger & the Silver Bullet Band - Blackberry Smoke - Courtney Barnett - Dr. Dog - Greta Van Fleet
If this fest puts out a lineup like
Arcade Fire - Florence and the Machine - Glass Animals - MGMT it will die imo.
I caught half/most of it and thought of you Sean because I know how much you love them. I really was enjoying it and only left to find my friends and catch a bit of George Clinton (ugh). The crowd started large but got small quick at The Felice Brothers which surprised me because I thought they sounded great. Fell in love with that Rockefeller Drug Laws Blues (I have been a very casual fan).
As a guy who has been to 5 or 6 Mountain Jams I was shocked at the crowd size. Sure it was beneficial for getting a spot, no bathroom lines etc but I have to question whether this fest can survive. TWOD and Sturgill were my favorites- they both crushed it. We joked how Andy Frasco is the new (yet anti) Michael Franti haha. He had me dying.

Glad Frasco was good. An old friend from home is playing g bass for him this tour, his insta stories were cool showing some behind the scenes MJ action.

I tend to agree.
I though the earlier in the day bands were good but a lot of them to me were similar and I must admit I didn't love them all enough to spend the entire day inside.
I think there needs to be a healthy mix of some older bands that pull in that original crowd and a the younger bands to pull in the younger.
This is my 5th mountain jam (I believe) and crowd size was noticeably smaller. We got parked way up the mountain which totally sucked - kinda flat but what a bitch of a walk that was. It 100 percent played into my not going in as early as I normally do and then hoping back and forth for sets. I really liked the new tent stage. I thought I was going to hate it but it was so intimate and I though the sound was good. I think it works way better that that small stage next to the main where like 40 people awkwardly stand spread out among a huge field. The earlier acts at the main stage felt embarrassingly small but it was nice to get up close.
I really loved Sturgils set and Alt Js. I felt like people like them and PTM took being at Mt. Jam as an opportunity to be a lot more jammy than their albums would suggest they are and I really liked it. I wasn't too jazzed before hand for Jack Johnson - but he was one of my standout performances based mostly on experience. Just sitting on my blanket with friends singing along as the sun set was the perfect way to end the fest.
Hopefully this doesn't stop them from having this next year. I hope good things happen. I didn't see them pushing promotion of pre-sale tickets for next year. This may be my last year camping though. The nights were colder than I was prepared for. Overall had a great time.

Thursday was damned freezing in our tent. Friday too
