This is the stigma that most affiliate with the fest but I didn't experience this at all. Sure there are some people there for the 'Gram but it's such a small portion of the 80K+ people there. I didn't have a bad crowd around me the entire time.
That’s honestly good to hear and heard a lot of that from this year which honestly really makes me wanna go now. Depending on lineups i may finally try Coachella in the next year or so too. I know a lot of us at fest go for undercards and one or two headliners we like but i would really wanna do Coachella for great undercard which they usually have but also to be like hell yeah on all 3 headliners and a good rare act of one of them.
Yeah being pretty local i would love to be able to make it back next year. I know a lot of the old regulars are from all over what kind of lineups would make you guys come back?
It would take a lot. I mean a lot. At this point I just want this festival to die.
Let us know how it is! I’m sure it’ll still be a good time, especially with VIP access. Weather will be great too as long as you have lots of sunscreen.
Okay, here's my quick summary: I love many things about this festival, particularly the VIP. With a different lineup, different crowd and different police presence, I would love to come back. The tl;dr version:
Thursday night we got set up in the All Suites hotel, overlooking the Surf stage. This was amazing. Friday, as we entered the festival the kid in front of us got taken by the police as soon as he walked through security. Though I had nothing on me, this was stressful. After entering, multiple police officers ran by chasing another college-age kid. High speed pursuit, radioing each other, all like he was a bomber. The news report I saw later said he entered the festival with drugs, was expelled, and then got back in, precipitating the chase. I later recognized that the police were on the top of the tall buildings outside the festival entrances with binoculars, radioing down which people to pull out of line. Later in the weekend I saw a man hitting his vape pen as he entered VIP, not knowing police were just inside. An officer snatched the pen from his mouth, put his arm behind his back and pushed him into a private area. Poor guy yelled "What the quack?! This is America!" All of this was way too intense, since it's medicine here in Maryland. Luckily I could easily return to the All Suites at any point in the day when the quasi-fascist ambiance or the sun became too much. The mean age in GA appeared to be 17. It was as teenager heavy as any festival I've seen, including Lolla and Gov Ball. This comes with all the attendant behaviors discussed on this board often. For the most part, just teenagers being teenagers. But two things happened while I was in GA that I've never experienced before. A drunk teenager/young adult approached us and said "Are you locals? Because we don't like anyone who ain't from Alabama." WTF? The next day I was wearing a Bonnaroo shirt, which usually elicits high fives and great conversations, and instead got this from a hospitable Southern young man as he passed by: "Hangout rules! Fuck Bonnaroo! You suck!" Again, WTQ? The VIP was a great setup. The pool, the food, the bathrooms, the easy access to inclusive beer and cocktails, and particularly the VIP acoustic stage were all great. The VIP crowd was significantly older and cooler (since I'm old), and seriously fired up to discuss my 2015 Shaky Knees lineup shirt. Made some good festival friends for the weekend. Here's what I saw, in order of my enjoyment: Vampire Weekend/ The Interrupters/ Jade Bird/ RDGLDGRN/ Hozier/ Lumineers/ HIRIE/ Shame/ lovelytheband/ Walk the Moon/ Cardi B/ King Princess/ grandson/ Jungle/ The 1975/ Bishop Briggs/ King Princess/ Pale Waves/ Jimmy Eat World/ Bebe Rexha Cardi B, King Princess, Pale Waves, JEW and Bebe we watched from the hotel balcony. Playing in the ocean before starting a festival day was not a thing I'd ever done before, and now I want it at every festival. So yeah, if they let me go for free every year, I'd do it. Given the way lineups are going, I can't see me ever paying to go back. I wish I'd dropped the VIP money a few years ago when I found the lineups much more appealing.
