I'm sure they'll sprinkle in a few quality acts to make it seem worth everyone's time, but the majority of the lineup won't be. They keep booking just enough acts to seem like they still appeal to the older crowd (but it's pretty obvious who this festival is for at this point).

Gov ball isn’t going to be good. I’d like for it be. I’d like to be wrong. There will probably be some gems. But the direction it’s been headed, not really high hopes.
I suppose "good" is all relative. I was kind of worried at this point last year, and then they booked a festival with parallel tracks that had me checking out plenty of the kind of acts I was sure GovBall was done booking at that point in its existence. I saw 29 sets there, last year, and only two of them were ones I just kind of settled on seeing because there wasn't anybody playing at the time that I really wanted to check out.
I dunno. I'm always dreading that one year is going to be the time when I finally can't find anything I like in a GovBall lineup, but it hasn't happened, yet, so I'm giving Founders the benefit of the doubt unless and until they drop a real stinker on us.

"Good" is definitely relative depending on one's tastes and criteria for quality... but it's obvious that GovBall is now catering less towards so-called music nerds and more towards what's hip and trendy (note how I'm avoiding the use of the word "relevant").

I mean, sure, on some level. But I'm a pretty big music nerd and a grey-haired old mofo, and names like Jack White, James Blake, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Sylvan Esso, Dirty Projectors, etc., from last year were right up my alley.
I'd be stupid or lying to say that they're not hewing to what the kids like these past couple of years, and I totally agree that's not as cool for me, personally, as years like 2014 and 2015, but, for my money, they've still always managed to get some good variety in there. I mean, hell, Tool headlined two years ago. Poor draw or not, that's something of an adventurous booking for this festival.
Again, I could totally be wrong, and this could be the year that they really go all in and choose the lineup via Spotify algorithm. And maybe I'm just a naive optimist...but I'm still holding out hope for good things.
I see no reason why Gov Ball 2018 wouldn’t have booked St Vincent, Sza, and Byrne if not for Pano. Now would that have come at the expense of some of the other cool bookings like James Blake? Maybe
Given the various Gov Ball presents shows that are scheduled for 2019, this doesn't seem to be trending in the direction of my tastes but we shall see.

You're right (and I think we've discussed this before and had the same consensus) that GovBall has catered to a different audience with the aforementioned names, as well as acts such as Beach House and Air in 2017, and I think it's certainly possible they'll do it again this year with something like Death Cab, for example.
The biggest issue is that Primavera, Best Kept Secret, and All Points East are all about booking such acts, which creates more of an incentive to tour Europe during that timeframe. Live Nation is going to have to negotiate differently to attract them instead, and we all know that they are primarily concerned about what will sell well and not about creating a balanced lineup.
The 1975 got Best New Music from Pitchfork. If you consider (1) they've already sold out The Garden and (2) they have another album tentatively set to drop in March per a Vulture interview with the lead singer... I will no longer be completely surprised if they find their way to #3 here. They seem to be on the rise with critics and considering their current popularity, I imagine this album will only add to it, converting some who have dismissed them as just another pop-rock band (myself included)

Meanwhile, Hangout just dropped its lineup, and the 1975 is on it, but not a headliner. I'd find it odd if they couldn't headline a festival of Hangout's profile, but did headline GovBall.
My money's still on them in the pre-headliner main stage slot, or as a Honda closer. It's going to be one of those situations, again, where they draw huge, and post-fest, people are saying, "I don't understand why (INSERT ACT HERE) headlined and not The 1975."

Not only are they not a headliner there, they're #7.

Why would The 1975 move a date in upstate New York if they were just going to be on the second row?
Frankly, I think they still stand a chance, depending on what else Founders/Live Nation may or may not have in store. Or at the least to be top line, similar to how 2017 and 2014 had four headliners (Tool, Phoenix, Gambino, Chance, and Jack White, Outkast, Strokes, and VW, respectively).

Yeah, I could definitely see that. I mean, if you look at last year's lineup reveal poster, Yeah Yeah Yeahs were on the same line, and in the same size font, as Travis Scott. In 2015, Florence was up there on the same line as the headliners, even though she played a non-closing slot.

they will "headline" a stage (the honda stage) (probably against Cardi B)
Seeing that Hangout fest lineup severely dashes my hope for this.
Not to continue on the Mr. Optimist front so much, but I wouldn't let it. There was very little cross-over last year - Tash Sultana, Manchester Orchestra, Mikky Ekko, The Struts, and Alice Merton, and that's it. I'm thinking Vampire Weekend might be in the cards, and it's pretty much a given we'll see the 1975, but otherwise, I'm not sure I'd count on there being a ton of the same names showing up for GovBall, at least based on recent history.

well think about it this way. Travis wont be there, Khalid wont be there. The undercard at Gov Ball is always very good, even with this Hangout one being bad. I wouldnt be so negative on this fest

Damn, if The 1975 aren't headlining then I sure hope they're closing the Honda stage. I saw them a couple of years ago at Barclays and they had a pretty awesome lights show.

Lmao I like that The 1975 are the only act high on the poster who we have any kind of "confirmation" of being here, and the only real thing we have to discuss for now is the stage they would play and the time they would go on. If they do drop the follow-up album in March, I think they close the main on Friday. If it's delayed, they'll close Honda or sub the main

I don't care if they drop 7 albums this Spring...if in January Gov Ball plans to have The 1975 close a stage while they are 7th on Hangouts lineup that's a poor, cheap look.

What if those seven albums are fire though? But seriously, why are we going by Hangout's billing when they have Khalid at #3 and The Lumineers at #2. When's the last time an actual human being even mentioned The Lumineers? The 1975 aren't my first choice to headline, I'm just saying I wouldn't be surprised. They've sold out MSG, they're primed to break out in a big way, Founders always mentions they like promoting acts to headliners and, they were billed 5th at Meadows 2016 (back when it was two days, I concede)
The past couple years they've had Jack White and Phoenix on the top line and closing the main, both of whom were significantly less popular when they played than The 1975 will be by the time June rolls around

I understand your point but even if Pano packed up their boxes for now, the Founders/LN vs GV/AEG battle is still alive and well in NYC. AEG owns Bowery Presents and will try again with a big festival soon, so I just don't think it's a good look to have The 1975 as one of the 3 main headliners at Gov Ball when they are on the undercard at Hangout and may be at Firefly as well. And this is coming from a 1975 fan.
