Honestly, to me, this is their best lineup since 2016. As a fan of hip hop and R&B, once I get past the disappointment of missing names like Cardi, Janelle, Frank, Future, this is about as good as I could've asked for and am glad I jumped on presale
Without digging into other artists
Tyler • Weezy • BROCKHAMPTON • Jorja Smith • Blood Orange • Mitski • The Internet • Amber Mark • The Voidz • Cautious Clay • Njomza
Florence • Major Lazer • The 1975 • Kacey Musgraves • Vince • Ty Dolla • Carti • King Princess • Denzel Curry • Ravyn Lenae • Saba
The Strokes (tired as they are) • Nas (semi-washed as he is) • SZA • Kaytra • Sheck Wes • Beast Coast • Lily Allen • Noname • Charli • SOB X RBE • 070 Shake

Yeah, this lineup feels very Meadows 2016 to me. Sunday is hip-hop almost all the way down once you get past the top line.

I know the answer is probably "money" but I don't really get why The Strokes would want to play this again for the 3rd time.
If Interpol can pack MSG, The Strokes could sell out a night at MSG and a night at Barclays. They could probably even parlay it into a Netflix special. The Strokes are New York royalty and instead of playing shows in front of their fans they're going to be playing in front of a tired Sunday Night festival crowd on a day where there is almost no other acts like them. Just a bit strange.

I could def see a hip hop/R&B fan being pleased with this lineup. However, for fans of any other genre I can't see it. Which is the most unfortunate part to me. In the past they've always been able to find the counterprogramming for different genres. For example, who's going to be headlining the smaller stage while Tyler's on the main? BrockHampton? Weezy? They are all the same genre

firefly has been my go to since its close and usually somewhat decent, until this year happened. still looking for a fest that fills that void, not quite sure if this is it. i'll keep my eye on price in the secondary market, but it seems like theres enough each day to make it worth 200-250ish

Probably because it allows for Casablancas to also play with The Voidz. Just like Albert Hammond Jr. did in 2016 at GovBall.

It's pretty weird there's not an obvious rock band to play against the rap headliner that night, like they did with Gaslight Anthem last year. Interpol (despite the MSG show), TV on the Radio or even Death Cab would seemingly all make sense. Hell even Taking Back Sunday would be a good NY nostaglia play there.
That day seems so poorly programed from a two-track point of view that I feel like it's obvious a few acts must have dropped out last minute and caused them to shuffle the lineup around for that day and Sunday.

As someone who also has Firefly as their go-to (sat out '17 and will sit out '19) with Gov Ball being my convenient second fest, I can tell you that Gov Ball may leave you a bit empty. Give the Woodstocks a chance to impress, and if that fails I suppose Gov Ball is a decent replacement. Osheaga looks cool and may pull a good lineup and Montreal is sooo much cheaper than NY in every sense.

Yeah usually Gov Ball seems to put a lot of thought into their bookings but I'm just confused about who is going to be there for Mitski, Rolling Blackouts, or The Voidz on a day where the top 6 acts are hip hop. On the flip side Strokes fans will I think still show up but Sunday is lightttt on like-minded music.

yup, keeping my eye on acl, osheaga, and woodstock. was nice having options within driving distance, doesn't look like that'll happen in '19.

Man, I am very underwhelmed by this lineup and am really regretting blind buying my VIP ticket. I know that there's risks with that, but I expected a little bit more.
Do they still do conflicting headliners? If Tyler and Gesa or Strokes and SZA conflict, there’s no point in going for me.
The past two years, they've put up one headliner unopposed - Chance in 2017, Eminem in 2018. The other headliners had opposing acts on the Honda Stage.
I don't know if they'll continue that this year. None of the headliners seem like a big enough deal to merit it. Florence is the biggest (draw-wise) name among them, and I don't see her going unopposed. I figure it'll be:
Tyler/Gesaffelstein Florence/Major Lazer The Strokes/Nas
Mayyyybe the Strokes go unopposed, especially if they have a new record they're out promoting. GovBall has enough love for that band that I could see them doing that. But, if it ain't them, I don't think it's anybody.

Highly, highly doubt The Strokes go unopposed. Too many >21 year olds or pure hip-hop/top40 fans there who don't care at all about them. That unopposed slot would have been reserved for Kanye or KSG.
If you add a better headliner to Friday (which seems we generally agree was probably KSG/Kanye originally), this line-up looks really solid (and features some of the undercard highlights from Coachella). If they fix that, I'd be in for a 3-day.

Here's a theory: The original lineup had the Strokes headlining on Friday, and either Kanye or KSG headlining on Sunday, with the Voidz on the undercard on Sunday. This would explain why Friday features an undercard with rock bands like Deal Casino, Hundredth, Miles Kane, Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever, and Hippo Campus, while Sunday is heavily skewed hip-hop.
Then, the Kanye drama happens, and GovBall can't find a big enough headliner to replace him/KSG. They don't want to have their least headliner-y act capping off the last day of the festival, so they switch the Strokes to Sunday and stick Tyler on Friday.
This may be me being waaaay too Galaxy Brain about all this, but I'm just trying to come up with some explanation for there being just one other artist on Sunday with a remotely similar sound to that of the Strokes while it's full of rap acts, while Tyler is headlining a day with a bunch of rock bands on the bill.
