Has Tyler The Creator headlined his own arena date in the area before? That's my usual rule of thumb for who can headline Gov ball if you look back historically but best I could find was that he did two nights at the Theater at MSG. For reference:
Kings Of Leon (MSG '09 '10 '14 '17) The Black Keys (MSG '12 Barclays '14) Phoenix (MSG '10 Barclays '13) Vampire Weekend (Barclays '13, MSG '19) Jack White (MSG '15) Kanye West (MSG multiple times) Tool (MSG '01 Izod Center '06 '12) The Strokes (MSG '11)
"come for the insta 💯 stay for the music, friends, food, photo booths, art..."
...
anyone who has been to this fest in the last 3 years or so cant be surprised by this. At least they arent loan sharking attendees like Firefly offering payment plans with $3 down.

Just funny to me that they'd present music as not the main draw. GovBall is now an instagram pop-up

All seriousness though: Help me out here folks.
I really want to see the Strokes, and it would indeed be cool to see them in New York. I've been to Gov Ball before and I didn't overly enjoy the festival itself. It was fine, but I didn't think there was much to it, and the crowd was young and sloppy as fuck.
I'll be in Montreal that weekend - question is should I jump on a plane Sunday morning and go to NY for the day. I feel like maybe I won't get very many chances to see the Strokes.

How much else would you want to see on Sunday? If it's just The Strokes I'd say definitely don't go. If they're really trying to make some kind of legitimate "come back" I'd assume that includes a bigger tour than they've done in a while

Felt the same way about my “last chance” to see The Strokes in 2016 and now they’re back once again. If you’re a big enough fan, seeing The Strokes in New York is pretty cool and they always bring it for Gov Ball. They seem pretty hit or miss live otherwise in my experience.

Nas, SZA, Parcels. That's without checking into anything else. My flight doesn't land until 1pm so i'd miss early stuff anyways. It isn't a huge expense to do - it's just I'm thinking I'll likely miss out on any of their other shows. Unless they show up on Glastonbury, or maybe even Rock Werchter. Worst part - I need to book within like the next week too..

Personally I'm hoping for a tour that ends with an MSG or Barclays show.

That would be awesome, I’d be tempted to fly out for a MSG show depending on how a tour (if it happens) goes. I’m probably the minority here but I’m tired of their set lists being so Is This It heavy, and those Gov Ball shows at least showed they were willing to mix things up for New York.

Id say the play is to hold off until late as reasonably possible in hopes that a full tour is announced before Gov Ball, then reassess

Think I'm gonna make Sunday happen. hows the crowd, logistics, etc compared to, say, Boston Calling and Osheaga?
No joke the worst crowd I’ve ever been in. I don’t get how people hate on Lolla’s crowd so much when this fest exists. People talk loudly, push their way to the front and are in general not considerate. It’s a lot of high schoolers. Other than that I think this is a fantastic festival and I’ve seen some amazing shows here. The overall production of the fest is great

Lolla was worse imo as someone who attended both last year

if you avoid every set that appeals to anyone under 24 its actually a pretty great and well-run fest. they schedule 2 artists at the same time all day so you always have more than one option

Sometimes those acts are good though. Gambino had a terrible crowd

This was my experience last year. I somehow ended up at every set that skewed older, and managed to avoid having any really negative crowd experiences. It's definitely not easy to pull off, though.
