Agree that The 1975 should've headlined. Especially if the rumors are true that they're doing 2 nights at MSG in the fall, then clearly they have more of a demand than any of these headliners/subheadliners.
Oh wow, where are you hearing those rumors and do you know what month that is potentially going to be?
I think it was someone on Chorus who said they saw the fall tour routing already. Wasn't a random user so I took it at face value.
Told everyone way back when that this year would bomb.
Tyler is subbing everywhere else, even at his own festival.
No one cares about Florence. I thought she had one of the best sets in 2015, but this is 4 years later.
Strokes.... my god what a joke. Same material for the third time since 2014 when they SUBBED. How thrilling. Not to mention it was so poorly planned that the audiences for Sunday (Strokes vs All else) are pretty much going to be mutually exclusive. “Legacy” act just doesn’t cut it. In fact, almost any other “legacy” act would have been a better choice sales -wise.
Foolish of them not to add anyone. Foolish of them to be cocky about their lineup to their customers when we told them it sucked so early on. I just expected more from them but it looks like they took a cash grab by not replacing Kanye and by not having Pano as competition this year. I’ve never seen such a decline in returning customers year to year. We used to come to this festival in droves, and now we have to justify even going one day. Not trying to make this a “the demographic is changing on us maaan” post, the lineup is so wack that it’s pretty difficult to even pin a demographic on this year’s

Have to say i agree w most of this....my main thing is i dont care if the focus is on the younger demographic (it has been for a few years) but give me at least some counter programming as they have in years past

While I don't disagree that the end result is disappointing, I think you're being kind of harsh, here. A few things:
1) It's a down year for American festivals, in general. Name me a festival on GovBall's level that has an all-killer-no-filler lineup and three universally hailed headliners. Even Coachella, monster that it is, caught plenty of crap as a big step down after last year's Beyonce-led roster. From the look of things, pickings were generally fairly slim, to begin with.
2) I think we can all generally agree that GovBall got Kanye'd, and while I, personally, am THRILLED he's not playing, I'm sure that left them somewhat in the lurch. Given that, and all the machinations that go into booking a festival lineup (competing with other festivals and touring schedules, etc.), they probably had a pretty tough row to hoe and tried to do something unique - say what you will about Florence and the Strokes, but they're at least not on every single other festival bill this summer.
3) As for Florence, I think saying no one cares about her is inaccurate. She sells out arenas. She's also the festival's first female headliner, which we can all hopefully agree it was about time for. That said, the fact that she's been through the area so much in the past year makes what would otherwise be a solid booking (keep in mind that, by all accounts, she wasn't meant to be the biggest name on the bill) into something more underwhelming.
4) Calling them "foolish" is silly. Adding people to a festival lineup isn't as easy as just deciding to do it - see above re: schedules and the like. And as for "being cocky" about their lineup once it's locked...what the hell are they supposed to say? "You guys are right; we tried our best, but our lineup is lame and you probably shouldn't come?" Their job is to sell tickets, so OF COURSE they're going to respond to complaints about the lineup with positive spin. Expecting anything else during the festival's marketing cycle is kind of bizarre.
5) I'm not sure how not having Pano as competition = a cash grab by Founders. They didn't really have anything to do with that one way or the other.
6) The final factor, here, is Primavera Sound, which takes place the same weekend as GovBall. Look at the lineup for this thing. Panorama or no Panorama, saying there's no competition in the space, now, is inaccurate.
I mean, look, ultimately, I'm not in love with the lineup, either. I think they abandoned some of the dual-track nature of the booking they did the past few years, I don't think it's diverse enough, and I'm underwhelmed by two out of the three headliners (I've never seen Florence, so yay for her, on my end). But chalking it up as Founders just deciding to suck is weird.
And they had Primavera competition for many years now, with Panorama not being held this year, they could book a better lineup.
Having said all that, I think this is one of the better mid-tier festival lineups in the US this year.
Agreed on ACL, but I'd put that on a tier above Governors Ball, with Coachella and 'Roo. I have no idea if the numbers/finances actually back that up, but that's my own personal festival headcanon, so I'm sticking with it.

Given Primavera's shift in booking this year, I'd argue that they definitely created more competition with GovBall than in the past.
Also, booking Florence for this thing was just Live Nation being lazy. Everybody from outside of NYC who wanted to see her already had the chance last fall, as well as this spring since she has a larger tour.
Got low ticket warning email today. Any possibility y’all were just freaking out and this is gonna sell just fine?
Nah. Look at the warning - it's for 3-day and Saturday VIP, and Platinum. No mention of GA. By this time every year I've gone prior to now, we've gotten a low-ticket warning related to at least one day's GA sales.
So, yeah, I still think it's underselling relative to past years. Which, I should point out, doesn't mean I think it's failing. A sold-out GovBall is PACKED. They could undersell by a certain percentage and still have a really robust crowd.

Tyler album is very good. I still hate that Gov Ball will use any big success it has to be like "see told you he was a headliner". Sometimes the best part of a fest is to have an established headliner but also have someone subbing or earlier who also surged in the time in between lineup release.

Does having the Grammy winner for album of the year playing at 4pm fit this criteria?

For sure, Saturday is a fantastic day of music. The 1975 are borderline headline status as well.

Well, there's our first GA low-ticket warning: Only 2,322 Saturday GA passes left. I wouldn't have pegged Saturday to be the day to get closest to selling out first, but there you go.
What’s my best bet for getting a cheap sunday ticket
Going on craigslist or FB on Sunday morning and grabbing one for $60 i'd say. You'll have a lot of people who are burned out/don't care about the strokes/want to recoup some money who will be lining up to give you their ticket. Speaking from past experience as both a buyer and seller on Sunday mornings for this.

Looks like I'm going to make it up for Sunday as well! What's the go to facebook page to try to get a cheaper ticket?
I think a couple friends and I are just going to drive up for the day from Philly and drive back after the fest. I know there's no parking on the island, but what do you guys recommend for best option for parking in the city and getting over to the island?

it's usually the events page but Facebook groups have gotten filled with scammers. The good news is it's really hard to fake a Gov Ball bracelet so craigslist is usually safe for this if your smart about it.

If the rumors of The 1975 doing two nights at MSG are true, there is no reason they shouldn't headline Fri instead of a dude who couldn't even fill one night at MSG.

Maybe, but no way GovBall puts up an installment with zero hip-hop headliners in this day and age.

Agree The 1975 should've headlined, but I think they should've been over Florence - good as she is, she felt a little forced considering her fall run in NYC, and maybe a second option to another act they might've wanted in her place. Tyler headlined the Hulu Theater twice last February and sold out both nights (I think?) I can see him making the jump to arenas in some markets in the fall

Ok I guess this isn't selling as poorly as I was expecting. Saturday has 1,213 tickets remaining, and Sunday has 2,677 left. No word on Friday, though, which makes me think they're struggling a bit to push those tickets.

I mean, that's the thing - I think it's underperforming relative to past years, but "underperforming" probably doesn't mean "ghost town" when it's an event this size. I'm guessing it's still going to feel crowded out there most of the time.
