It is really impressive how little the GovBall crowd cares about rock music. Mitski had legitimately a quarter to a fifth of the crowd she pulled last weekend at Boston Calling. The tent is not even half full for the Voidz. Hippo Campus drew a crowd, but that was pretty much it for people with guitars today. I know rock is dead, and all, but this festival makes it feel like it’s not just dead, but almost entirely decomposed.

I dont necessarily think rock is as dead as govball makes it out to be...i think it has a lot to do with the lineup...like i dont think many primarily rock fans were going to see fridays lineup

Woof. 7th Gov Ball for me. Definitely felt weirder than ever, couple thoughts
- the grounds were really really muddy. Pray the rain is over or else yikes.
- Gesaffelstein was incredible, so were The Voidz, Brockhampton really went for it and I enjoyed it and appreciated that effort.
- Sorry but Tyler is not a headliner - set was very ordinary - left early
- Yes indie rock is kind of dead at Gov Ball but nothing about Mitski’s live act is helping. I like her music but that was rough. Maybe it’s just not meant for festivals.
- whether it was Brockhampton, Tyler, or whatever else the crowds left sets early in droves. Felt like there was apathy over the whole day.
Tomorrow’s my favorite day. Giant The 1975 fan, love Florence and Kacey, so hopefully it’s a blast.
Love this fest because it’s run amazing and is part of NY but more than ever it feels like it doesn’t know what it wants to be.

It was funny reading from the subreddit to this message board in regard to Tyler....they were loving his performance over there

I had kind of a weird Day 1. It was my first time flying completely solo for the day, and while I had a good time, I think I would've enjoyed it more with a lineup more up my alley. The water refill situation in the early part of the day was also kind of ludicrous...but I also walked right up to Luke's Lobster and Big Mozz with no line, which is unprecedented.
Ranking the sets I saw:
1. Hippo Campus 2. Mitski (criminally underattended) 3. Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever 4. The last three songs of M0. 5. Gesaffelstein (I'm sure he was great, in general, but this genre isn't much my thing - I'm sure it'd be ranked higher if it was) 6. Cautious Clay 7. The Voidz (would've been ranked MUCH higher, but what the hell with all the sound issues/lack of an actual soundcheck? This set was an absolute mess, and it hampered what could've been one of the coolest acts of the day for rock fans) 8. Hundredth 9. Deal Casino 10. As much of Blood Orange as I could deal with before I was bored out of my mind
So! Day 2. This forecast has me shook, because Florence is one of the main reasons I'm excited for this festival, and all the bad weather looks like it's supposed to hit pretty much right when she goes on. BUT, I'm hoping the National Weather Service is the most accurate, as they're only predicting a 40% chance of anything, and mostly just rain for NYC. Fingers crossed Thor keeps his lightning bolts to himself.
U.S. Girls > Sunflower Bean > Denzel Curry > Saba > Kacey Musgraves > King Princess > Vince/1975 split > Lord Huron > Florence
OK day overall - I was underwhelmed by the lineup in general but could find enough to get the 3-day pass on stubhub. Saturday seems nice and full of stuff I want to see but as for Friday:
1. Mitski - have seen her twice before (not on this tour) but she just stood and played at those shows. I really loved the show this time around and was not expecting it. By far my favorite set. 2. Gesaffelstein - was super close and got into it 3. Rolling Blackouts CF 4. Tyler - love Igor, but agree show was too low-key (even boring at times) for a headliner. Hopefully he grows into it, cause the album is great 5. Voidz- sound issues :-(
Taking the Metro North into the city today. Going to try to purchase 2 tickets on our way in. Anyone know if there are people on the walk across the bridge selling extras?

I’ve never been happier for a weather forecast to be wrong. What a great day Day 2 ended up being - it felt very old-school GovBall, with all the variety and a full opposing headliner. Aside from one obvious choice, I’m having a hard time ranking the sets I saw, because they were all so good.
OK, so...
1. Florence. What an epic, cathartic show. Not to get too personal, but I’ve had a massively terrible week on a life level, and by the end of “Shake It Out,” I finally felt completely free of it. Amazing.
2. Lord Huron. Came out of nowhere. I’d heard a few songs and kind of dug them, but they really kicked ass, live.
3. Sunflower Bean. I’ve seen them a few times and figured they’d bring it...and they did. It’s a shame more people whose main purpose at the fest was to mosh didn’t catch this one.
4. U.S. Girls. Probably one of the best early afternoon sets I’ve ever seen at GovBall.
5. Denzel Curry. Only not ranked higher because he didn’t whip out the “Bulls on Parade” cover, which I was totally jonesing for.
6. Kacey Musgraves. She was perfect in that late afternoon slot.
7. The 1975/Vince Staples. I split sets, here. I really dug what I saw of the 1975, but Matt’s gotta work on that banter. Meanwhile, Vince was great - I’d heard he wasn’t on point live, but found it pretty good. Only dinged because he finished 20 minutes early (people are saying it might have been for health reasons - hope he’s ok).
On to Day 3...if it goes down. This "wait for a weather update" thing is giving me serious Sunday 2016 vibes.

Bought a last minute pass and gotta agree about Day 2 fun...went down for Vince..Lord Huron..Flo...having the counter programming helped for all three and all the artists were on point

Should have seen him instead of mitski at BC. He loves performing in Boston. his crowd was great too.
I KNOW. Ugh. At the time, I didn't think I was going to GovBall on Friday, and I really dig Mitski, so I thought BC was my only chance to see her. In retrospect, not the best scheduling decisions I've ever made.
I'm glad I got to hear "Black Balloons," though. That's my jam.
