The anonymity of the East Gate is still the funniest thing to me. People on Twitter are freaking out and people are turning around and going home because of the hour + wait on the west entrance. I just walked through the East security on 20 seconds.
Gov Ball has been cursed with weather over the years. they should’ve canceled the entire day today vs what happened though
Yeah kinda strange decision making for today....i mean I get it why they did it the way they did but if you’re gonna open gates at 630 with a high percent chance of storms around 9 probably shoulda cancelled

I've noticed the East gate is FAR less crowded in general as it pertains to getting in. This year I finally took the bus over the 125th bridge to find almost no line as opposed to the west gate which is jam of people getting off the ferry and walking off the bridge. Never taken the bus back though. Can anyone confirm if there are crazy lines coming out of the festival if you take the bus back over?

Sucks about it being cancelled today.
It’s my method of choice on the way in & out. I usually leave right before the headliner plays their last song - I’ve never had any issue waiting for the bus. They usually queue up 6 or 7 long buses when the fest is ending each night. They charge double the fare on the way to the island, and it’s free on the way back (to expedite and get people off ASAP).

I don’t know how to embed stuff from twitter - but that video of teens destroying those dumb plexiglass things is about to go viral and will do no favors to this festivals reputation.

That shit makes me sick. Like, what the fuck do you have to think the world owes you to feel like that’s ok? Assholes.
Charli XCX was the only act we were looking forward to today and thank god she had a makeup show at Le Poisson Rouge. Already home safe and sound, I just knew going to Randalls at 6 would be awful.
This whole year was handled horribly, with the shit lineup, to the reactions to customer reactions to the lineup to today. And what would make things much better is what I’ve been suggesting for years now - MOVE THIS TO CITI FIELD. Never was a problem there for Meadows...
Sorry to everyone who tried today, you got robbed.

Well, I’d assume The Strokes will be one of the headliners next year. This may prove to be beneficial because maybe they will actually be on a new album cycle.
11/19: Caribou 11/22: Ranger Trucco 11/29: Armand Van Helden* 1/16: L'Impératrice 1/30: Jamie xx 2/1: DJ Seinfeld 2/7: Mild Minds* 3/1: Father John Misty* 3/19: Confidence Man 3/23: DARKSIDE 5/8: Rüfüs Du Sol

No more Gov Ball for them please. Clearly the relationship between them and Founders is great - so use them as the highlight of a one day fest in the fall. Corona Park allows one day events.
Gov Ball Presents: (name it whatever you want) The Strokes Interpol James Murphy *DJ* Who ever else you like
So basically that Just Like Heaven fest but more high profile - The Strokes are royalty in New York, they should be playing to MSG or something else that’s not on Randalls.
Sunday was a total disaster! I'm not gonna lie that I took part on some of the "Fuck You, and we want The Strokes" chants for a few minutes (I was being stupid I know, but had a great prime spot for them since I was camping out once Lily Allen came out) then I left after seeing ppl throwing bottles and stuff to the stage. I also noticed teens destroying property, and then boom... the storm arrived furiously, at one moment I felt that I wasn't going to make it due to ppl pushing their way out in a clogged exit to the bridge, it was pouring so hard that I couldn't see anything for a good 30 seconds.

I'm kind of at a loss for words after what I saw last night. I've always known this festival's crowd was a little gross, especially as it's gotten so much younger the past couple of years, but the way people reacted last night - and are still reacting - is just really such an extreme drag. The destruction of property, throwing trash and trash bins, the fucking with security guards and staff who are actually the most in danger because they have to stick around until the people who decide to stay and chant "Fuck GovBall" have gotten their jollies and actually followed the order to leave...it's so fucked up. And then, all the bitching I'm seeing today from people who obviously didn't look at a weather report all weekend (News flash for those in the "they should have opened on time and moved things up" crowd - there were serious storms predicted with a 60% certainty around 4. We caught a brush with one of them and a short rain burst at the gates, but they otherwise gave us a pass...but what if they didn't? Meanwhile, when they opened the gates, the chances of that night storm hitting were registering at 30-40%) and are traumatized because they didn't come prepared for bad weather AT ALL and are blaming Governors Ball because they got soaked - and, you know, almost trampled by *other attendees* who were acting like lunatics - is just so vile.
I dunno, man. I had an amazing Saturday this year, but I might be done with this festival - not because of the festival, itself, but because so many of the people going to it are grossing me the fuck out.

Agreed the crowd reaction is ridiculous but i also feel like that is not representative of who the overall festival attendees are

No that's pretty much on point for this festival. It started as a somewhat alternative music festival showcasing rock, indie, hip-hop, r&b, edm but now has basically turned into a full-on party for teenagers. I'm not knocking that, is what it is, but not surprised at the reaction to last night and thankful I opted not to go Sunday.
A few other gripes I had was with the VIP area this year. Feel like they kinda cheaped out as one VIP area didn't even have a bathroom. Also, the one to the left of the Honda stage was so far and off to the left you could barely see the stage if you were in it. Super weak.
Its kinda funny that the niche that the founders' guys fell into was this teen party. Im pretty sure that they didnt want to end up like this and that it was simply a profit driven decision at the end of the day. Wonder if this stuff on sunday makes them think about the monster they have built and decide to go back to basics next year in pursuit of a different crowd

I find that hard to believe considering how very sparse the crowds were for shit like The Voidz, Mitski, U.S. Girls, etc. The money is sending a pretty clear message that it wants more acts like Sheck Wes and Bazzi.

I'm hoping that last night's happenings have an impact on who Founders books to future lineups. I have to believe a majority of those causing the ruckus & chaos had been Mo Bamba-ing / getting lit at Sheck Wes an hour prior. The videos of the art installation getting destroyed were directly next to Beast Coast's stage...

Yeah, there's a reason they didn't book any of the PBR rock bands like The Gaslight Anthem, Japandroids, Manchester Orchestra, etc this year due to the poor poor turnouts for those 3 last year.
Well I saw Bob Moses and Nas yesterday, they put on good shows. First time I've been to gov ball since 2015, though I went to Randall's island for Pano the last couple years. I def felt like I was on the older end of the age spectrum at 29. After yesterday though, I don't know if I'll ever make the trip back for Gov Ball/any fest on Randall's. The location is just too much of a risk to travel to. I know there's nothing we can do about mother nature, but it legitimately felt unsafe leaving the fest last night and having to walk through the storm regardless.
I'm not sure logistically how they could fix this issue, but couldn't they have some sort of shelter type area set up outside of the fest under pavilions for some portions of the crowd to try to wait out the storm, maybe in that Icahn stadium or something? I don't know. It just seemed like coming over the loudspeakers 10 minutes before the storm hits and basically saying gtfo wasn't the best way to handle an evacuation.
That being said, that still doesn't excuse the entitled douchers throwing shit on stage and acting like little bitches letting all their teenage angst out on some colorful insta photo ops.

Maybe the crowds were sparse for those acts because there weren't enough of them in the lineup to spur sales to people who like that sort of thing.
I was surprised that the crowds for Hozier and Brandi Carlile weren't as big as I thought they'd be at Boston Calling the previous weekend. Then I realized that without a few more similar acts in the lineup, people who like them, but liked little else in the lineup, may have said to themselves, "I'll wait for the next headlining gig in town."
It may be that any festival which books fewer than half a dozen acts in a particular genre over the course of a multiple day festival may not be offering enough to fans of that genre to get many to buy tickets.

Specifically for this festival and how it has been marketed sure, but I dont buy that this festival couldnt be financially successful with a different target market based on Austin City Limits, Outside Lands, and even Boston Calling, all city festivals that are able to pull enough support from the older demographics to make money

I will note that the Saturday VIP sold out which is exclusively 21+ so it's not like the "older" crowd is entirely missing. I feel like we all have this same conversation every year after this festival. We note that the hip-hop/pop/annoying EDM sets were the best attended and usually reflected a crowd of youngsters yet still want the festival to book acts that appeal more to an older demographic. Can't see GB taking that route anytime soon but let's hope they don't go all out in that direction and end up like Made In America.

Yeah, I went into this year thinking GovBall became the way it did because a festival centered on rock music just isn't commercially viable...then, I went to Shaky Knees, in a smaller market, and saw how successful that was from an attendance perspective. Of course, it may be a matter of scale - Shaky isn't close to GovBall in terms of sheer audience numbers, and it's probably also much more expensive to put on a festival in NYC, so they need to shoot for a certain level of ticket sales to make a profit.
Still, it got me thinking, especially after the dismal turnout for Mitski compared to Boston Calling. I know it'll never happen, but I think Founders should turn GovBall into a hip-hop/pop/R&B-only festival, and launch a second, significantly smaller event at another time of year catering to the indie/rock crowd; maybe a more modest, one- or two-day thing with a lower headcount. Just Like Heaven just demonstrated this year that an event for this kind of crowd is viable. It's just not doing anybody any favors to try to force that type of thing on a GovBall audience that has zero interest in it, and people who would normally be into it are staying away because they don't want to deal with the usual GovBall crowd.
Multi-genre festivals are struggling. GovBall has done better than most, but the past few years have demonstrated where the audience that has come to claim it's interests are. So, why not go all in and, instead of trying to jam a few guitar band square pegs into round holes, give them their own thing with a lower-level event and see how that flies?
