Really gotta hope Newport didn't take a page from the Boston Calling playbook by replacing an exceptionally talented and creative woman of color with some of the blandest whitebread on the market...

What happened with Boston Calling?
Janelle Monae dropped out and was replaced by CHVRCHES

Ah, gotcha. Yea, that's sort of lame. Never really dug CHVRCHES. Never really dug Caamp either, and with them having played last year, they would be a very disappointing TBA for me.
With him pointing out the album dropping Friday specifically, I am hoping they're a museum pop-up or a "busking" set like someone suggested earlier.
Edit: Open mic performers? That could be cool - though would suck to take a spot from some of the folks who wanted to play the open mic.

Man, if Caamp does get booked, I'm going to have to make a note to self to never attend Shaky Knees and NFF in the same year, again. So. Much. Cross-over.
Looks like at the very least Juliette Lewis is interested... Maybe in attendance? And maybe performing herself during it?
Yikes!! I was thinking that "The Collaboration" would include the likes of Bonnie Raitt, Alison Krauss, Dolly Parton, Emmylou Harris, or (health permitting, and that's very doubtful in 2019) Joni Mitchell. (Carlile told a between-song story at Boston Calling about going to Joni Mitchell's home for dinner and to discuss a project.)
If it's Linda Perry and Juliette Lewis, you should all ask for a partial refund. "What's Going On" is the most annoying song of the 90's. 4 Non Blondes, Spin Doctors, and Blues Traveler were the bane of an otherwise great musical decade filled with so much wonderful stuff of many different kinds.
In hindsight, the fact that this isn't on the mainstage should have been a clue that these wouldn't be legendary performers.

It is on the main stage, and I agree if it's just Carlile, Perry, and Julliette Lewis people would have the right to be fucking pissed off.

That's a hot take I can think of at least five 90's hits that are more annoying than that one.
Also, you've never been to Newport Folk Festival and it shows - no one who has actually experienced the magic that is NFF would ever ask for a partial refund.
while i am bummed about noname, i love caamp and missed them last year to see low cut connie so i wouldnt be mad to see them show in any capacity. i understand desire to replace with like talent but for an already creative booking choice like her, i can see it being harder to match.
no problem with the teases so far on the collab, tho i am surely staying to the very end of Dawes/north hill. it may be out of order but my thought is they'd save "when my time comes" for the end and i'd sure like to sing that along with everyone in the quad.

They should at least do something interesting with the time slot if they can't get a comparable booking.
I'm also definitely biased because ever since they were announced last year I've found Caamp to be incredibly lame
In other news, anyone else going to Robert Ellis Saturday? Any thoughts on who we might see as his friends? I sent Jonny fritz a note on insta asking if Traveller would open (or if he would be at Newport) and sadly he responded “I wish”
I would expect mlv (who seems to still have no confirmed weekend plans), who else

At Boston Calling, Brandi talked about performing Joni Mitchell's Blue. That is happening in October and has nothing to do with Newport.
No one who has ever attended Newport would ever ask for a "partial refund", especially over an unannounced set which will feature many special guests and will likely be once in a lifetime set.
The female collaboration is on the main stage.
Please take your alternative facts somewhere else.

I figure Taylor and Grif from Dawes are a solid possibility. Maybe Ian, they just toured together, if he shows early and still has time for Deer Tick. Really looking forward to this. It’s going to be a great weekend of after shows for me. Aaron Lee Tasjan, MCK, Robert Ellis, then Deer Tick. Can’t wait to see who shows up for all these shows.
I would have loved a comparable booking to NoName, but let’s also remember that NoName was probably the most pushing-the-definition-of-folk artist they’ve booked (at least this year). So that’s a tough last minute replacement to make.
I’m a big fan of Caamp, and even happier that we finally have a stomp folk band on this year’s lineup. I know the genre has moved beyond that style, but it’s good to get something a little more upbeat.

Bean Shapino owns a lib with facts and logic
1. True, but it indicates that they are working together. It's not unreasonable to speculate on a multi-faceted collaboration. That sort of thing happens all the time.
2. That was a joke based upon the possibility that a festival which delivers so many truly great artists would put Perry and Lewis in the spotlight.
3. You're absolutely right, that was a factual error on my part.

1. Again, the partial refund comment was a joke.
2. Thirty-ish years ago, back when I was still a menace to other drivers and pedestrians with my incredibly poor hand/eye coordination, I did drive down to catch Richard Thompson at a pre-Jay Sweet edition of the festival. So...you're wrong.

Says the guy who holds Hozier, one of the most boring, white bread acts in Folk music today, in such high regard.
He's the heir to Van Morrison's Irish Soul Mystic crown. He may not be your cup of tea, but that doesn't mean he's not a great artist. It's possible to detach personal resonance with an artist's work from an honest assessment of the quality of their art. I'm not a huge fan of, say, Jimi Hendrix, but that doesn't keep me from recognizing his brilliance.

tw12 seems like one of those older guys who tries so hard to be "hip and cool" to fit in with today's youth
Also, no matter what anybody says, Hozier will never be held in the same regard as Jimi Hendrix, whose sound completely changed rock music as everybody knew it - so that's a poor analogy.
Every year I tell myself I need to make it to NFF for at least a day, and every year I don't do it because it seems logistically difficult and pretty expensive. What's the "cheapest" place to stay within a reasonable distance from the fest? Newport airbnbs and hotels in the middle of summer (nevermind Folk weekend) are not cheap. Is it easy to get an Uber around there? When I almost bought tickets this year, I had considered doing the ferry to/from Providence, but I'd want to catch aftershows which run too late. I understand it's ridiculous to start planning for next year when this year hasn't happened yet, but any advice is appreciated.
