I was hoping I’d have to eat my words, but I stand by my board-unpopular opinion that The HighWomen should have headlined. Even not knowing any of the songs... they delivered. And were captivating throughout. As for Phil, I understand why those who love him love him, but he doesn’t offer much to casual listener. And probably why the crowds are exiting at the rate of a typical Sunday night collab headliner.
Glad I stuck to the Sheryl set. Saw her with Heart last week and it was good but today was great. It was definitely the standard you expect at Newport. Then so many great songs during that Highwomen set. I'll have to get that album.
And this
Highwomen should have been the closer. And not have overlapped with Sheryl.

Listened on tunein and watched Instagram stories all day. Not being at the festival, my favorites were Sheryl, Highwomen, and Yola. I think Highwomen subheadlining Before Sheryl would have been nice. Phil’s set wasn’t headliner material in my opinion but would have been fine as a quad closer. Then again I’m pretty sure the Dead is Sweet’s favorite band so I guess it makes sense.
Upcoming Shows: August 7: Green Day/Smashing Pumpkins/Rancid/The Linda Lindas August 30: Waxahatchee/Snail Mail/Tim Heidecker September 17: Pearl Jam/Glen Hansard September 24: Idles/English Teacher

Today was great. Got there later than I wanted, but still caught full sets (or as close as I could get with the overlaps) from Charley Crockett, I’m With Her, Kacey Musgraves, Sheryl Crow, and the Highwomen, and caught up with Black Belt Eagle Scout in the Family Tent. All excellent, but my two favorites were Sheryl Crow (holy guest spots!) and I’m With Her, who were outstanding. I agree with those who say the Highwomen should’ve headlined.
The only downside: We parked in Lot 4, so I pretty much just live here, now.
Love Newport but the rules this year make zero sense.
-No detachable lens -Can’t ask for a setlist anymore after a performance -They’re getting pissed off for saving seats for people in the quad between acts
First one isn’t true, the lady you dealt with was misinformed.
Setlist thing is a bit odd Saving seats is ridiculous and I support their enforcement of that.
I wish they were still enforcing the no videotaping rule like they did last year. The Highwomen show was constant phones held up recording entire songs.
They also seem much stricter about the pit at the fort stage being full and not letting anyone else in which is annoying when you can see clear space.

The camera issue, I know, happened to a few people who got there early. Issues seemed to pan out when more people came in. As for the saving seats, I’m not about holding seats for people who don’t come immediately or in the next set after another set finishes up.. However, they were getting pissy with like people who leave quickly during the break in sets to go grab food or go to the bathroom. Idk, just an observation.
Also change my mind: Phil w/ The Terrapin Family Band is the worst “incarnation” of the Dead post-Jerry.
What does everyone think the chances of Maggie Rogers showing up for the Sunday Fort finale are? My daughter (13) really wanted to see her but we only got tickets for Sunday - which she is still super excited about of course! Keeping my fingers crossed!

In the same boat, hope everyone is having a blast. I never would’ve one to see Sheryl Crow but her set sounded awesome on the stream. I listened to Todd Snider (who I’ve been clamoring for for years—naturally I miss the year he comes) and Lukas Nelson as well, all sound great.
What’s this Caamp record release after hours in the museum I saw on Instagram? We’re general tickets released to allow people to stay on site after the music was over?
Also, even as probably one of the bigger Kacey Musgraves’ fans on this board, I was super disappointed by her set. Somehow she played every single ballad of hers until her final song, when the pace finally picked up. No Biscuits. No Follow Your Arrow. And even on the slow songs, it just felt like she was going through the motions (probably due to a massive tour playing every festival this summer). It wasn’t bad, it just wasn’t Newport main stage quality.

They had this terrible idea of calling people to a random spot to grab free tickets for the show (announcement via the app; 20 minute notice of when the tickets would be given out), then only gave out 60 tickets to a crowd of 100-200 people swarming the poor lady with the tickets.
With that said, the idea of an after-hours post-headliner show in the Museum Stage was awesome. At least some lucky souls didn’t have to deal with traffic.
had a lovely day out there and i hope you all did the same. woke up at 645 to drive in so a few thoughts before i pass out:
black belt - great open, such beautiful fort music Liz cooper - shred city, drummer jam where he kept beat playing on stage/guitars/amps/anything in site was v cool and first standing ovation of day Cooks - nothing more fun than a Phil cook set. Guest spots from Tallest Man, Amy Ray and Anais Mitchell Warren - got to see soulshine, so I’m good Kacey - sounded great, solid dance party to close Sheryl crow - pleasant surprise. Smart to open with two hits from yesteryear, isbell duet was great Highwomen - best of the day for me. No reason in world this shouldn’t have headlined. The Chain was a legendary quad mover Todd snider - most unfortunate booking of festival, not even all seats full in harbor but made the effort to carve time out to see it. Incredible stuff, had crowd laughin and clapping along. Wish he played an aftershow Lesh - yiiiiiikes this was a miss... Wanted to love it, left pretty bored
Just here to reiterate it should have gone Sheryl - > Highwomen. Lesh was terribly underwhelming, Highwomen stole my damn heart and I hated having to miss Sheryl to guarantee a seat for them.
No use complaining, today was great, just an odd scheduling choice.
Guest list from Steal Your Folk, feel free to add who I missed: Ramblin Jack Elliott Colin Meloy Nicole Atkins 2 random audience members Jonathan Wilson Cedric burnside Devon gilfillian
Favorite sets of the day: Adia Victoria, Amy Ray, and Cedric Burnside. The South brought some 🔥 today.
I was able to catch a bit of Black Belt Eagle Scout and was kind of bummed to start the day with the BBES/Yola/Adia conflict, but Adia slayed and so far is my favorite discovery this year. So glad I was able to be right up front for the whole thing.
Even though Lukas Nelson doesn’t really clic for me, I was happy to see a few songs before heading over to catch the whole Amy Ray Band set. Dude can put on a show. And he has good hair. Amy Ray was incredible and she had Brandi Carlile and Phil Cook join. Amy Ray has such earnestly genuine presence that I find irresistible and even though she was in a tough spot sandwiched between Lukas on the Quad and Sheryl on the Fort everyone at the set was enthralled. Caught a bit of Sheryl, but as others have mentioned it was disappointing that they’ve made it so hard to dive into the pit.
Cedric Burnside and his drummer are a powerhouse dynamic duo and switched places toward the end of the set. It was an incredible two man showcase of Mississippi Hill Country blues.
The Highwomen were so much fun, but the quad was so packed that it was impossible to get through the tunnel to try to catch the last bit of Phil Lesh. Tho from what I’m hearing from you all it was no big loss. I too would have loved to see The Highwomen on the Fort stage, but I also love the vibe at the Quad, so it was great. I have a feeling that album is going to be on heavy rotation when it comes out.
Can’t wait for Jupiter & Okwess to rock the Quad tomorrow! What are the rest of you looking forward to?

I checked my confirmation of tickets email to find a time and it states 8 PM. Is that doors? Is that when the first of the openers goes on?
When does Deer Tick usually take stage?
I’ve been to one Deer Tick after show but can’t fully remember timing and logistics. I remember leaving the headliner a few songs early. And grabbing pizza before going to the Cafe. But I don’t know how long that all took.
I’m worried if Dolly is really part of tomorrow’s collab, there is no way I will want to leave early. But I’d love to see tomorrow’s openers and don’t want to be late for the Tick.

Warren Haynes was by far my favorite set of the day, then as someone said shred city with Liz Cooper and the Stampede. 3rd was a close race between Sheryl Crow and Parker Millsap with Sheryl just edging him out. Cooks in the kitchen was a lot of fun too. Would've liked to have caught Caamp, but that meant passing on Liz Cooper / Parker Millsap and missing half Steal Your Folk aftershow.
Milk Carton Kids were fantastic tonight. It was a toned down show but absolutely hilarious and had a bunch of artists I’ve never heard of and a comedian (as well as Nicole Atkins and Anais). The old church they held it in was very cool, the acoustics were perfect for MCKs harmonies. Really lost as to why there wasn’t much enthusiasm for them.
The side benefit of that show is it was 0.2 miles from the cafe so I was able to make it there before tick took the stage. Erin Rae, MC Taylor, Taylor from Caamp, Tallest Man on Earth all joined in on songs.
Also, I don’t know if aftershows count towards the Jim James award, but Erin Rae did both cafe shows so far and I saw her join multiple sets throughout the day today.

I got there a little after 11 tonight and still hung out for 10-15 minutes before Tick took the stage.

top sets for me yesterday
Phil Lesh Sheryl Crow Highwomen (only because I watched from the beer garden; they sounded amazing and I am now very excited for this album. Redesigning Women has really really grown on me) Steal Your Folk Liz Cooper Cooks in the Kitchen
I though phil lesh and his band were spectacular. started off with a super small crowd so I got I really close. they were all super tight and that almost cut my hair cover with warren Haynes and benmont tench was probably the highlight of yesterday for me. in hindsight really wished I stayed for the whole set (left about 20 min early for the aftershow) but traffic was an absolute shitshow last night. my sister said it took her almost 2 hours just to move her car out of the parking spot when she stayed until the end. that said, historic set, jack straw opener was wonderful, eyes of the world is always great, and phil on vocals for friend of the devil was very cool.
Sheryl crow, god dan. she tore it down. hit after hit with amazing guests. her band is so solid, and had people jamming all over the fort field.
a little bummed I missed the 2nd half of highwomen but what I did see from the beer garden was wonderful. they all seemed to mesh well (brandi appeared to be the unspoken leader) and the gay country song was probably the best of what I heard. great quote from isbell "this would be like if I brought the civil rights movie I made to Spike Lee" (in reference to him being hesitant to writing a gay country song as not a member of the LGBTQ community; he wrote the song for Brandi).
