anyone know anything (guests, set times, etc) beyond doors at 8 and show at 9 tonight for Robert Ellis at the parlor? Trying to time my exit and last year we got there waay too early for glorietta night 2.
Typically it gets a late start, but I would say the real theme is the shows are unpredictable. They can go late as well. Will be there in a green Kitchenfest T-shirt and black hat. Say hi if you want.
My educated guesses are Blake Mills, Jonathan Wilson, and Mandy Moore (if she's not in the middle of filming her TV series), but there had to be more guests.

Today was excellent. Now that we had a feel for how things work, everything seemed much easier. Getting there a couple hours earlier didn’t hurt. My only complaint was that I couldn’t see all of Lucy Dacus, Jeff Tweedy, and Mountain Man, all of whom were stellar for my tastes. Biggest surprise was Jupiter & Okwess, who went from an “I’ll watch this out of curiosity” to possibly my favorite set of the day.
The Collaboration was outstanding, minus the repeats from yesterday (I dig “If It Makes You Happy” and the Highwomen’s take on “Highwayman,” but I just heard ‘em, so...). But everything else was just so much fun. I was bummed not to hear “Strong Enough,” which is my favorite Sheryl Crow song, yesterday, so it was amazing to hear it in this context. I knew (or, mostly knew) about Dolly and Linda Perry from the spoiler, but Judy Collins was a total surprise (and made my wife cry, because she loves the shit out of that song), and “What’s Goin’ On” and Dolly’s set were major highlights. Brandi Carlile looked like she could not possibly be having any more fun up there. The whole thing felt really special - I don’t know how it compares to past years but, as a Newport newbie, I was pretty impressed.
Edited to add: My rankings for the day, almost-full or full sets only. No duds at all.
1. The Collab 2. Jupiter & Okwess 3. The Nude Party 4. Gregory Alan Isakov 5. Jeff Tweedy 6. Mountain Man 7. Lucy Dacus 8. Illiterate Light

I’m usually pretty pessimistic about collaborations but today had some great ones! I loved the Songs for Beginners set. It had some rough spots but everyone was giving it there all and really seemed to genuinely be trying and enjoying themselves that even the misses were still nice (..Amy Ray’s song was maybe the exception... I felt bad for her cause she just couldn’t seem to get the harmony with the guy beside her, or vice verse). The Milk Carton Kids + Anais was pure gold.
Don’t listen to Dawes much but all the guests sounded great and preservation hall absolutely killed it. (Loved seeing Clint show up in sets with his sax throughout the day too). And Yola, who seems to be on at least two stages at any given moment, continues to be stunning.
And then the final set was a lot of fun too. Even after their performance yesterday, the Highwomen’s sound really doesn’t do it for me (they’re clearly great though and should’ve headline—and I’m a deadhead that really enjoyed Phil yesterday). So hearing them play THE SAME SONG again felt kind of silly. But hearing Big Yellow Taxi and Both Sides Now was beautiful. And I’m shocked at how fucking awesome Linda Perry is (“you better fucking sing along”). Dolly was a blast too. And I loved Brandi’s polite smile as Judy Collins laughed about a guy following a woman home after a show because he wanted to sleep with her.
Oh, and somehow in the midst of all this, I almost forgot how perfect Gregory Allen Isakov’s set was. Woo man. I need to go to bed!
The maps/diagrams they were using for setting up the headline had “BRANDI CARLILE NEWPORT JAM” in huge font across the top of them so from that perspective I get why they didn’t have both that and Highwomen as headlining sets.
On a separate note, Kyle Craft better get his own full slot next year. I’m impressed more and more each time I see him!
Y'all what a great day! That final set was really special, a hard one to top for sure. Saw mostly full sets as well, more and more into planting at the Quad/Harbor for a few consecutive sets.
Jupiter and Okwess were the surprise of the day - I will stand by my verbal assertion I made earlier that every member of that band has more musical talent than everyone else on the lineup this year. Truly just masters.
What would this board be without a minor complaint - are the Harbor seats packed in way too close? It's impossible to leave halfway through a set without seriously disrupting the entire row. Quad is not an issue.
The Harbor stage does have issues with overcrowding and trying to make too much out of the space available.
Tried to go from Maggie Rogers to Lucy Dacus and it seemed borderline impossible because of the crowd at Kevin Morby blocking the flow of movement between the Fort and Quad. And security was being extra assholes about people trying to walk on the wrong side to pass through.
Kevin Morby probably should have been put on a different stage.
I caught the second half of Jupiter and Okwess. Had no idea who they were coming in, but that was fantastic.

Devon Gilfillian was an amazing set to kickoff the day at the Fort stage. If you didn't get a chance to check him out, I highly recommend him.
I did not care for Illiterate Light. Gave them a 2nd chance after opening for Rayland. I just feel like they're making noise for the sake of making noise. Give me Black Pistol Fire instead. Maybe its just me.
Kevin Morby is hit or miss to me. Something about his singing/talking style throws me with each song. I bailed for Lucy Dacus half way through and thought she was amazing.
Loved the closing set and Dawes was a lot of fun, only complaint was the conflict between the two, but think both were appropriately scheduled.
Juat wish Ruston Kelly didn't conflict with 2 sets that sounded great from reviews.
Also sounds like a miss on my part for Jupiter & Onkwess.
Wish I could've found time for Yonotan Gat and the Eastern Medicine Singers yesterday.

This. Saw a bit of his museum set as well as his Graham Nash cover at the "Songs For Beginners." He has such an amazing voice. It filled the museum up. I would watch him do a whole show of late 70's rock covers. He deserves to be more known than he is.

His first album is amazing. Second was okay. But then his third was excellent again. He’s one of my favorites ever since I saw him in the museum two or three years ago. Saw him in Boston this week because I knew I might not make it into the museum again and I have no regrets. It was awesome and he ended with a cover of Loving Cup which was great. As good as the Graham Nash set was, everyone was working really hard to try and hit Nash’s vocals and Craft was the only guy that seemed able to do it without sweating.

Well, I’m not looking forward to what’s being predicted as a hotter day, but today features a couple of my favorite artists on the bill, so tally ho for Day 3.
The O’My’s > Nilüfer Yanya > the end of Stephen Marley > J.S. Ondara > Courtney Marie Andrews > Our Native Daughters > Phosphorescent > Portugal. The Man

That wasn’t the Kevin Morby crowd. They stopped flow into the quad for a good 15 minutes while Dolly’s SUV entourage drove into the fort.

I think J.S. Ondara is going to be amazing and personally I think his style of music is perfect for the crowd. He is going to become big I can feel it.

I hate to say it but, Newport is becoming more and more mainstream. With Portugal The Man today who had the big radio hit. And getting Raury a few years ago. Remember when Jay said in the article that when Pete was alive we couldn’t get big names like Kendrick Lamar or Chance the rapper. So my guess is the maybe the finale set today will be more mainstream and a protest set. Any thoughts?
Day two was one of the best I’ve had in my three years at Newport
illiterate light - absolutely slayed, huge sound and fun Songs for beginners - a highlight for me, amazing to singalong to such classics with ya’ll. Could have filled fort stage easily Jade bird - sounded incredible, great presence and she played “my motto” which was awesome Susto - another win, this set really connected with harbor crowd Rayland - sounded amazing, left after a few songs, hope to catch him in nyc soon Maggie - what a queen. She owned the stage and her angel from Montgomery cover was inspired Lucy dacus - beautiful, glad she did “la vie en rose” Dawes - life affirming goodness here, incredible to see isbell on anchor, energy was incredible in the quad tent Collab - what can ya say about miss dolly, she killed it, fun time and great to see so many people stick around
Robert Ellis late night was great, but as always it was very late for me. Liz cooper opened, tasjan and Courtney Marie guested, I may have fallen asleep while still there.

Def don’t think they are trying to become mainstream. They don’t have the capacity to become mainstream. But yes, they do seem to be booking more well known radio acts.

This is a confusing post. Raury is far, far from mainstream. They have had larger acts than Portugal the man in the past. Jack White, Beck or going back to 2008 even Jimmy Buffet. Talk about mainstream.
I am excited that there has been little theorizing or leaks about today’s finale. The Sunday closing shows these past two years have been some of the best musical moments I have ever seen. They are one of a kind, heartfelt, and talent packed.
I imagine James Taylor, Mavis and Judy collins will be a part of it. Otherwise it is a mystery.

Yeah agree about Raury as well. Farrrrrrr from mainstream.

Sorry if it came out wrong what I meant by that is they are expanding there reach in who they get.
Guests at Mavis so far: Jeff Tweedy, Lake Street Drive, Jason Isbell, Milk Carton Kids, Hozier, Brandy Carlile, Yola
Anyone get cell phone video of the inevitable cover of The Weight? With that lineup of special guests, I'm sure it's in the running for best all-star cover of The Weight in recorded history.
