This was one of the better Sunday night collab sets.
Guests that I can recall who were not already on the lineup included Robin Pecknold, James Mercer (or the Shins?), Mavis, Jim James, and of course Kermit the Frog.
It kinda makes me wonder where all of that indie folk was on the actual lineup!
Kermit and Jim James duet was wonderful. Trey singing God Only Knows was also heavenly.

Well, that was a hell of a day. Every set was awesome, and our original plan to leave early was foiled by If I Had a Song being a blast. I missed Kermit (DAMNIT), but Mavis and the full “Suite: Judy Blue Eyes” with Pecknold/Johnson/Mercer kicked my ass in the face. Nothing on the day beat Our Native Daughters, though - they got a standing ovation after literally every song and deserved the shit out of every single one of them.
I’ll collect my thoughts on the festival as a whole later or tomorrow, but today’s rankings - and, again, not a one of these was a dud.
1. Our Native Daughters 2. If I Had a Song 3. Portugal. The Man 4. Nilüfer Yanya 5. Phosphorescent 6. J.S. Ondara 7. The O’My’s 8. Stephen Marley

I feel like the first half of it was very unorganized and didn’t flow well. It just wasn’t good...I watched a lotta people leave...the 2nd half was much better.
That Tench Dylan cover was veryyyyy tough to get through.
Anybody know the setlist and guest list for If I Have A Song? Trying to remember a few things.
Will write a longer summary of the festival experience, but wanted to echo a couple of things.
Our Native Daughters was one of the best festival experiences. Watching the fierce, strong Rhiannon Giddens break down while singing "Mama's Crying Long" was heart wrenching. Have found myself on the verge of tears several times later in the day just remembering it. Have been thinking a bit about the parallel's with the Highwomen's set and it has me a bit muddled right now. Will reflect on it more later.
Felt like I was lucky to get a little prize to share with the board. After the "If I had a Song" set I was next to a pair of women that lunged for a setlist that was thrown out so I asked them if I could get a photo.
One thought I had... in the songbook was "Under My Thumb" but it isn't in the setlist and it wasn't played. However, both If You miss the Back of the Bus and Strangers weren't in the songbook. Also, Kyle Craft was all dressed up and ready to go and seemed a little sad at the end. Thinking he was supposed to cover Under My Thumb and it was cut for those other two songs. This continues the grave injustice that we have seen thrust upon our hero Kyle Craft and am now formally petitioning the Newport Gods to give him his own set next year.
All for now. Am emotionally and physically exhausted.
It was a real pleasure to share the festival and the board with you all this weekend. You all were a part of the community that made the experience!
Why did Chris Funk possess the charisma of a disgruntled Tuesday night open mic host? Really dragged the whole thing down for me.
That Suite Judy Blue Eyes sung to Judy freaking Collins was a seriously special and surreal moment, though.
Exactly! That too! Funk shouldn’t be doing that.
It's a shame because he did a pretty great job with Speak Out. This seemed sloppy and he was just so drab. I don't get it, maybe he was frustrated by technical issues (which are always abound and unavoidable with these huge collab sets)

That cover was bad. And the Hozier / Lake Street Dive did nothing for me (what a pairing of bland artists!)
But Kermit and Jim, Trey, and Our Native Daughters were all in the first half and were three of my favorite songs during the set.

I think there are certainly negative things to bring up. I think there were a number of logistical items that could (and hopefully will) be addressed.
The disaster that was the entrance gate and bag searches. The new regulations related to the pit/dance area. That, in my opinion, the festival just felt way more crowded this year (despite tickets still capped the same) The whole Bose stand just rubbed me the wrong way too.
However, I think there are also good things to say about this weekend. Today was probably the overall best day of sets across the board in the six years I’ve been here. Literally every set and partial set I caught today seemed to knock it our of the park. Just from my anecdotal observations this year also seemed to have the most diverse audience that I can recall in regards to people of color, which I hope is a trend that continues. Traffic leaving the park seemed waaaaay better than in years past. Even parking on the hill yesterday I was out surprisingly quickly and walking into the hiss after show by 8:50. Moving the food from near the left of the stage to back towards the blankets was a good move to clear up some congestion.

Alynda Segarra and Rambling Jack Elliot too (though I’m not certain if Rambling Jack was not in a museum set or anything)
I happened to not come in until 1 pm every day, so avoided the security line drama this year. I missed a couple of sets of interest, but also stayed out of peak sun every day too.
My main problem was the lack of space in the tents area. I like to hide out at the QC base camps, and it seemed way more crowded in the tents area than in years past.

I didn't go to any of the deer ticks this year but was trying to unload my tickets on Saturday and saw some sign on the door at the blues cafe mention about them filming the show. I wonder if they plan on filming this and next year (plus whatever their set is....headliner? Maybe?) and release another documentary or something. Either way, cool to know.
And this comes after I just got done saying that "after this year....if I'm back I'm just going to try for one of the Pickens nights and ignore all others." I'm already backpedaling on that.

They’ve been filming like that for at least a couple of years now. Sure hope they eventually release something from all of it.

Well some of the recordings they were doing a few years ago made it into something but not as the focus. The Straight into a Storm documentary has a section towards the end highlighting Newport and the Blues Cafe shows. I'm gonna guess whoever helped work on that may be involved in this new thing, whatever it may be. It'd be a big deal to release a movie that got into their Blues Cafe shows and Newport inclusion specifically.

Terzo Creative was behind that Deer Tick documentary.
I can’t believe next year will be the last of the DT after parties. I’m distraught and confused and don’t know what to do with my late nights after 2020.
Our Native Daughters’ set was spectacular... and to think I wasn’t gonna check that set out but had too good of seats for Phosphorescent to pass up.
Give Kyle Craft his own set.
Give Sharon Van Etten her own set. Is this 3 straight years she’s shown up to play one song?
Book The Shins.
Does anybody have an extra poster I can buy off them? I really wanna get the floral print on the poster tattooed on me but I feel weird doing it without owning he poster.
Upcoming Shows: August 7: Green Day/Smashing Pumpkins/Rancid/The Linda Lindas August 30: Waxahatchee/Snail Mail/Tim Heidecker September 17: Pearl Jam/Glen Hansard September 24: Idles/English Teacher
Next year will be last Deer Tick shows There will be a Deer Tick performance at Newport
Did they announce this at the Sunday after show? Can anyone share the Sunday after show stories? Love to hear about what happened there.
Yeah Deer Tick announced it at the after-show. Jay was on stage, and said that there will also be a DT Blowout at the fest next year. Assuming it’ll be a headliner.
Anyone have any insight into how this fest works in terms of payment to the musicians? I’m just genuinly curious what’s going on when someone like Tallest Man On Earth shows up for an aftershow, but then pops on stage for like 3 and a 1/2 songs over two days. Is he doing that just for fun? Does NFF just manage to get by on the goodwill of it’s name and people doing favors/just enjoying the fun of being there? I’m just genuinely curious.
Kermit the Frog showing up was unreal and a awesome, silly, sweet, magical moment. I loved it.
Preservation Hall was missing Charlie Gabriel this weekend (the older bari sax player), which was a sad absence, he’s great. PH, in general, felt a little sloppier this weekend. The energy in their Sunday set was a little off. A few aces, but a few less so. I love the song “Walk on Gilded Splinters” and was pumped when Atkins came out for it, but for a song that’s such a staple of Big Band Music, it just really failed to get going. On the other hand, I loved seeing Clint (the other saxophonist) showing up all over the weekend—he seems so sincerely pumped to be there every time. Also, just want to add that PH is one of my absolute favorites: I think they’re some of the most talented people there every year and even a sloppy PH is still impressive in lots of ways.
I was listening to Liz Cooper’s set from the beer garden and I really wish I’d been closer for it. Loved what I heard and I’ll definitely check out her show next time she comes to town.
Gregory Alan Isakov’s set was amazing, and almost gets lost in such a jam-packed weekend but holy cow was it beautiful.
I agree with others that the Sunday night collab had some big hits and some big misses: who thought that A Hard Rain Gonna Fall would be a good sing along song?
JS Ondara was amazing. His voice is unreal. His lyrics are beautiful. He actually feels like the most quintessential “folk singer” in the traditional sense of all the modern artists to actually perform there in recent years. Loved it and I absolutely loved hearing him sing Mardi Gras Mambo with PH.
Billy String and Molly Tuttle was one of the best shows of the weekend. Two of the most amazing guitarists and their band was killer too.
Maybe this last note is controversial, but I really wish they would change the rule—or at least regulate a little bit—the blankets behind the quad stage. Blankets to the left between the beer garden and the tent make perfect sense, but right behind the stage, it takes up so much room when there really aren’t many places you can stand to get a decent view of the stage if you’re not in a chair. I wish they just had a line, at least, that was marked as “standing room” similar to how the Fort has that in front of the seats. As it is now, I’ve had a number of people sitting on blankets like ten feet back and yell over for me to move because I was in their way. I feel like that’s a pretty unreasonable request to make, but similar things happened there a few times over the weekend (and to be clear, I’m trying to be mindful of standing in front of people, whether they’re also standing or if they’re sitting, but I’m also going to take advantage of open space to see the performers).
All-in-all, great weekend. Great music, great people, and great ice cream.
