Jim James (full band) announced for Telluride bluegrass. I don’t think he or MMJ have played there before.
I don’t know what the “(full band)” part means. I always assumed he did solo stuff under his own name.
I would guess he’ll be at the fort in similar capacity.
He just finished up a big solo (acoustic) tour where it was just him on stage (and another guy sometimes playing other instruments).
Now that that's over/wrapping up he's announcing tour dates with a full backing band. So it's still him solo (doing solo and MMJ songs) but instead of just him alone it's him with a full group (bass, drums, piano, etc.)
Watching a full band performance of Mandolin Orange on YouTube. I didn’t know Joe Westerlund plays in that band...is this new...?
Looks like he plays with them off and on. Looks like more on recently, but he doesn't have any February dates listed with them. Saw him play with them at Moon River this year great set.
Back in 2015 James Taylor finished his 1969 Newport Folk Festival set which had been cut short because of the moon landings. If you ever wondered what that 1969 set was like then wonder no more. Apparently the camera operator was looking for the moon. Nice crowd views at end.
Scenes from that James Taylor's 1969 Newport set are also used in this documentary about his early years.
The Newport show was only his second ever solo show coming just a week after his first. This explains why he had to introduce Fire and Rain and no one knew it. He performed as the last act and was cheered by thousands of fans who stayed in the rain to hear him. Prior to this he was in London where he was signed by The Beatles Apple Records and made his first album, at the same time the Beatles were recording The White Album. McCartney and Harrison guested on "Carolina in My Mind“. It was over produced and didn't sell. He played a simpler style at Newport and in the following years that proved a huge success.
This seems to be the Michael Lang produced program in conjunction with the Bethel Arts Museum and Live Nation, but I've heard there is also a competing festival. I really don't know and find the potential logistics and acts (some have been rumored for a year) more interesting than the thought of attending. Was fascinated to read how involved Newport people were involved in the original show, and how much Newport was considered a model.

According to Chance McCoy the band is on hiatus, and not sure if they will ever return.
His quote makes it sound to me more like he's not sure if he'll be with them if they do return. At least that's what I hope. Would love for them to get back together at some point down the road. Hopefully just a temporary break.
“Playing my last gig with Old Crow this new year,” Chance McCoy said on social media December 30th. “The band is going on hiatus for awhile and I have no idea if and when I’ll be back playing with the lads. It’s been an amazing six years. From living in a brokedown cabin on food stamps to winning a Grammy. My hats off to these fellas, now it’s time for them to take a much needed break.”
Old Crow Medicine Show has not addressed or announced any break or hiatus themselves. Saving Country Music reached out to their management, but inquiries were not immediately returned. As for Chance McCoy, he plans to be touring and dabbling in his own music during the hiatus. Along with fiddle, McCoy also plays guitar, banjo, mandolin, and contributes to vocals.
“I’ll be heading off to Scandinavia and the UK soon to begin a new chapter in my musical journey, my first solo tour,” Chance says. He has six shows booked in England starting late January. “I’ve made a fabulous new record and will be releasing that in 2019. Hope y’all will stick with me and get to witness something new and beautiful blooming. It’s been a wild ride and it ain’t over yet.”
Interesting. James Taylor was devastated in 1969 to have his Newport set cut short. His career hadn't taken off yet and his second solo show was cut short. Many years later faith let Taylor and Wein cross paths on a crise ship for a reason. Taylors set in 2015 wasn't a gimmick. It was Newport righting a wrong.
Rolling Stone - 1969 If 1965 was Dylan's year at Newport and 1967 Arlo's, then 1969 should have been James Taylor's. But 1969 was nobody's year at the 10th annual Newport Folk Festival and that may have been what was wrong. In an attempt to stay away from the star system, the festival lacked excitement and direction.
Given a chance, Taylor could have smashed through. But, relegated to closing non-prestige daytime "Young Performers" concert on Sunday, he was cut off by a Festival official after eight numbers. When Taylor walked off after "Carolina," the entire drizzle-soaked audience stood for a five-minute ovation.
To no avail. Impresario George Wein lumbered out and announced that the astronauts had landed on the moon: now top that. Then, smirking: "The concert's over."
Taylor, unaligned with any power group at the Festival, looked down backstage and murmured: "I waited all weekend for this … and they only let me play 15 minutes." But those 15 minutes set a standard for clarity, wit and magnetism that was never equalled during the four days of the Festival.
"Newport Festivals Foundation has made a donation on behalf of Jade Bird to Intonation Music in Chicago, IL. Funding will directly support the salaries of the two teaching artists who serve as mentors and music instructors to youth at Ellis Arts and Recreation Center. At Ellis, and at nine other sites in Chicago’s mid-South Side, Intonation offers in-school, after school and summer programs to bring music education to under-resourced communities. While learning to play music and form their own bands, students learn to collaborate, express themselves confidently, and take ownership of their limitless potential."
Gonna try to make sure all of these get posted here along with the artists
Who are the potential overlapping artists from Coachella? Doesn’t look like much folk on their lineup, but I’ll admit I’m not familiar with about half of the acts.
I see:
- Kacey Musgraves - Hop Along - Maggie Rogers - Hurray for the Riff Raff - Khruangbin
And maybe... Anderson .Paak if Newport wanted to expand their definition of folk.
Or Los Tucanes if Newport decided to incorporate more world music.

Yeah not a ton. Khruangbin just played so they're probably out.
I think we'll get Maggie and Kacey, and HFTRR if she has another album out. Would love Hop Along.
Digging early jade bird listens, “lottery” is a great song. Reminds me of Margaret glaspy who played in ‘17, I didn’t see her but her record sounds v similar.

What does everyone think about "I'm With Her" playing this summer? Sarah Jarosz, Sara Watkins and Aoife O'Donovan have all played the festival solo in the past. It would be amazing to see them play together at the fort.

They played together at NFF a couple years ago with Chris Thile

But I’d like them back again.
Thanks, Didn't realize they have played the fort already but sounds like it was a great set.

I'd be all about that, but it looks like they'll be in CO the Saturday and Sunday of Newport
