Jason Isbell is producing the new Josh Ritter album, backed by the 400 Unit. I was hoping for him on this year's lineup, I'm pulling for him for 2019 too.
Upcoming Shows: August 7: Green Day/Smashing Pumpkins/Rancid/The Linda Lindas August 30: Waxahatchee/Snail Mail/Tim Heidecker September 17: Pearl Jam/Glen Hansard September 24: Idles/English Teacher

Psyched for this: Wife and I decided to ease out the summer hiking around Woodstock for a few days (scouting out good seats for next year's CSNY?). Found a cabin in the Byrdcliffe Arts Colony and, looking around for music, lucked into Lowcut Connie performing at Levon Helm's iconic studio. So glad to see them being invited into the room that features people like Darlingside, I'm With Her, the Lone Bellow and, (ducking) Lake Street Dive.
Anyone else fill out the Newport Foundation questionnaire they recently emailed asking about favorite acts from this year, and recommendations of up and comers for next? Hard to say who is an up and comer, so put down Maggie Rogers and a group called Upstate Rubdown who I caught busking in Washington Square Park just a few years ago, and made it to the Clearwater fest this year. Still ironing out the kinks, but museum ready:

Nice. They play Rochester and Buffalo a lot. They're on the inaugural Borderlands Festival lineup next month in Buffalo. Glad to see someone talking about them. They'd be a good fit.
All three songs are gold. If there is a Newport Folk Festival in 2019 without boygenius, I will protest. Give them the closing spot on the Quad if need be.

Huh that must be recent. I recent saw them and the show as billed as Upstate Rubdown and it is still billed that way on the Borderlands Promo stuff. Interesting.

Sharon Van Etten: Very happy to find that she was in attendance this year when she jumped out on a few songs with Deer Tick at their final after party. If I am not mistaken, she debuted a new album live at Eaux Claires, meaning she’ll probably be touring new music next summer.
Phosphorescent: Hasn’t it been a while since he played? Facebook keeps alerting me that he has a new album coming out and the new single is on the Interwebz.
Kurt Vile: Another alumn that hasn’t played in a while but has new music on the horizon.
Phoebe, Julien, and Lucy: Discussed earlier. Hoping Newport does what it needs to do to get them. I worry that they won’t be touring together a year from now, but I hope they’ve had positive enough experiences at the festival to go out of their way to come back. (Heck, Phoebe woke up Saturday morning having no idea Marcus Mumford would fall in love with her music and invite her out during the headlining set.)
The Shins: this probably falls in the “this should happen, but won’t happen category” as Bon Iver did this summer. James Mercer now has his introduction to NFF. Next step is bringing his own act.
Hopefuls who I have no reason to suspect could or could not be there:
Dan Auerbach: I know NFF is open to booking the Black Keys, and he has some history at Newport with the Arcs.
Vampire Weekend: makes sense; will be a year removed from the hype of this new tour.
Ben Howard: next in line for the Passenger spot of artists who would fit so perfectly but have not gotten around to playing yet.
Damien Rice: maybe Glen can convince him? Another act that has surprisingly not played this fest.
Eddie Vedder: sounds as if Jay is working on this one, but could take some time.
Some less likely hopefuls:
Thunderbitch: Might be my favorite Brit Howard project. Would bring some of the much needed and loved grit to the festival. Although, it’s been too far removed since their album, and Brit is already working on other projects (as we saw this summer).
Lump: No idea how long they tour on this album. They’ve already played through their first (and maybe only) run of dates. Less likely they’ll be together next summer. But would be some much needed folktronica. They crushed when I saw them in London.
Beirut: one of the bands I would most love to see at Newport, but I am not even sure what they’re up to nowadays.

I would like to see Dan Auerbach as well. Surprised he didn't play around the release of Waiting on a Song.

Speaking of Brit. A drummer I follow on instagram, Nate Smith, posted a picture yesterday of him in the studio with her, the Alabama Shakes' bassist, and Robert Glasper and said they were working on a new project of hers. Not sure what it'll be but that's a solid little ensemble.
If Warren Haynes gets his own set, does he headline?
By himself? I don’t think so.
But I think anything goes at Newport. If Warren Haynes wanted to run the guest gauntlet during his set, and/or include a tribute to Gregg Allman (were they close at the end?), then that’s a different story.
