To add to my previous post, I’ve convinced myself after this year’s fest that there is a long list of artists who could headline Newport if billed and booked correctly.
For instance, even though Jenny Lewis just played a Quad Stage set, if Newport wanted to book a career retrospective in which she brings out guests like Ben Gibbard and Conor Oberst (and maybe a Rilo Kiley reunion?), then she could definitely headline.
Similar arguments could be made for Conor Oberst (with an impromptu Monsters of Folk jam?), Dan Auerbach, Bob Weir (although he could/would probably headline without any guest appearances), Mavis (already been done), Jim James, the Dessners, Jeff Tweedy, Gillian Welch, any of the Nickel Creek crew, etc.

The new Ruston Kelly album is pretty good. I could see him playing next year. And since Newport has a history of booking spouses/partners, it would be a great add to potentially get Kacey Musgraves on board.
How ‘bout a repeat of this year’s Friday main stage?
Ruston Kelly or Lilly Hiatt - Anderson East - Hayes Carl or Ryan Bingham - Kacey Musgraves (and maybe another John Prine guest appearance?) - Chris Stapleton or Dolly Parton or Willie Nelson

Kind of a strange interaction with Kevin Morby and the NFF Twitter yesterday during the grassroots invitation thing. I suggested Morby and Waxahatchee solo and together. Newport responded with "We tried" (Seems a little early to have given up already, no?)
Morby responded at around 2am with "So did we".
Maybe I'm reading too much into it but it all seemed a little flippant. I wonder if something happened there... hopefully not.
Upcoming Shows: August 7: Green Day/Smashing Pumpkins/Rancid/The Linda Lindas August 30: Waxahatchee/Snail Mail/Tim Heidecker September 17: Pearl Jam/Glen Hansard September 24: Idles/English Teacher

I would guess that means some outside force prevented them from playing?
Agreed that it seems weird they'd say that as if it's not an option in the future

I responded with "Make it work please. The folk fans need you." and Kevin's mom liked the tweet lol... if we can't convince them, maybe she can?

Newport seems to like recruiting Canadian bands. Just saw Crash Test Dummies announced a local show in December, and they also have plans for a a full N. America tour in 2019.
Jason Isbell will possibly collaborate with David Crosby on a song on Crosby's new album. At the very least it sounds like some future project will happen between them. This Rollingstone article briefly talks about how it came about from them getting together at Newport.
John Prine Tells A Devastating Story At 'Summer's End'. We see Prine playing guitar next to an empty chair, but spend most of our time watching a grandfather and granddaughter coming to terms with the death of their daughter and mother. There's also a brief flash of a TV screen reporting on the U.S. opioid crisis, a clue to the devastating story told.
"The opioid crisis is tearing American families apart," John Prine writes in a press release. The video is dedicated to "Max," the son of Nashville Mayor Megan Barry, who died in 2017 due to a combination of drugs, including opioids. Prine considered Max a part of his extended family and performed at his memorial.
Also, pretty happy I could finally identify the guests during Phoebe’s set. Really enjoyed Christian Lee Hutson’s song about getting the old band back together (he was also playing guitar for Jenny Lewis). And Sharon Silva of the Wild Reeds? Cool!
Listening to the latest all songs considered and it feels like clear foreshadowing that Hozier will be on the bill at Newport this summer. I imagine he’s at the point he could headline, but doesn’t necessarily need to in Newport
