So, I have an ask for this thread (namely, because I don't lurk on any others and looking for advice from Newport-goers only...).
I'm planning a friends' weekend (okay, yes -- it's a bachelorette party, but I hate all the normal associations that go with that term). I want a similar Newport experience in terms of music and level of relaxation/chill vibes from other festival/concert attendees. I'm basically looking for a festival weekend sometime next spring/summer (anywhere between April and August, minus NFF weekend of course!) with some or all of the following qualifications:
1. Decent one-day pass prices (will mostly likely only do music one day) 2. Outdoor-sy surrounding area (looking to do hiking, kayaking, SUPing, that kind of shit the other day) 3. Smaller, but fun city (I'm thinking somewhere like Asheville, has coffee shops/breweries/restaurants, etc. but you can still find a quiet corner easily) 4. A lineup with a similar vibe to Newport (folk, rock, country, lack of firm genre, etc.)
Are there are festivals that have been on your wishlist? There are just so many, I don't even know where to begin -- but felt like this would be a good place to start as you all bring such a wealth of knowledge! And hey, if I go to the place/festival you recommend -- I'll throw some beer tokens your way next July. Many, many thanks in advance!

I know people around these parts tend to love High Water Fest in Charleston.
I love Mountain Jam, but I don't know if that'll be around next year. It's near Woodstock and has a lineup that lately has been sort of a mix of Newport and Sirius Alt Nation. DelFest is also great but is more bluegrass-y and I'm not sure how much there is to do in Cumberland, MD except for the fest.

This area I might suggest Green River if you want to get closer to the west coast I think Telluride.
DelFest would be my suggestion. Affordable. Great for camping (I did it in an RV/camper). In between shows, you can go tubing down the Potomac River. I’ve heard of people hiking and rock climbing just off site too. From the campsite, you can walk to a few bars in town, or catch a shuttle into the heart of Cumberland. There’s an indoors aftershow each night which could make for a fun dancing/bacheloretty thing (you have to buy separate tickets for this). Fairly chill set up so you can drink at your campsite, go check out a show or two, then head back to the campsite. There are usually pick up jams every night in the campgrounds.
Downsides: lineup is predominately Bluegrass, and even moreso, Jamgrass. But there have been some great lineups over the years (a year or two ago Dan Auerbach was a special guest and played with a bunch of the bluegrass legends; Isbell has been booked before. Shovels and Rope. Old Crow. Etc.). It also takes place in May, and it still can get chilly that weekend (more of a concern if you’re tent camping). Cumberland isn’t the most hip city (it’s not Asheville).

Clearwater Festival would be a good choice, I think.

High water has always appealed to me and Charleston is such a lovely city. This past April I went to The National's Homecoming Festival and I was blown away by how well organized and curated this first time fest was. The music lineup was outstanding. It was in a beautiful park right on the river. There were also events going on all through Cincinnati throughout the festival. It was smaller than Newport but so well done.

Took my mother in law to see "A Star is Born" and got pleasantly surprised by a few NFF alum cameos--Brandi Carlile and Marlon Williams get a nice little moment. I guess I'll just go ahead and start the hype for Lady Gaga at the fort now.

Lukas Nelson and Promise of the real wrote and played songs for the movie. I believe they are in it as a backing band but I haven't seen it yet. Lukas plays one of the songs at his shows

Yes! I didn't realize it was them during the movie but noted it in the credits. Turns out Jason Isbell wrote one of the songs as well. Lotta Folk Family involvement.

Here's another contribution (indirectly) of folk family by Kris Kristofferson. This movie has roots.
The film is a remake of the 1937 original drama starring Janet Gaynor and Fredric March.
That film was adapted in 1954 as a musical starring Judy Garland and James Mason.
A Star Is Born was also remade in 1976 as an American musical romantic drama film about a young singer (Barbra Streisand) who meets and falls in love with an established rock and roll star (Kris Kristofferson).
The story was subsequently adapted in 2018 starring Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper.
Now that i hear all the hype on the radio for the new Mumford and Sons world tour i kind of understand why it was kept secret at Newport. If it wasn't the secondary market would have gone nuts.

They are playing the Garden with...Maggie Rogers. Guess someone else also took a liking to her.
I also just took an even greater "liking" to Susan Tedeschi after catching Tedeschi Trucks Friday at the Beacon Theatre. Ravi Coltrane, John's kid, sat in on a bunch of numbers, including a truly ethereal jam on Midnight in Harlem.
I'll take one order of Maggie and one of Susan at NFF, and Ravi at the jazz fest, if you please.

Yeah Maggie had collaborated with Mumford before Newport. They brought her in when they were recording their album too.

Merge Records is throwing a 30th anniversary festival the same week as Newport next year, maybe there will be a few overlaps in the lineup? Some potential Newport artists signed to Merge are: Arcade Fire, Hiss, HC McEntire, Neutral Milk Hotel, Conor Oberst, M. Ward, Waxahatchee, etc. Also, Spoon and Wye Oak would be cool slightly outside the box bookings, either could do a St. Vincent-style stripped down set.

At the Glorietta show tonight in Brooklyn when Matt Vasquez was drunkenly dedicating a song to two friends (one being Kelly from Delta Spirit) he mentioned quickly that he and Kelly were talking and are hoping for a possible Delta Spirit thing for 2020. Any Delta Spirit news is good news as far as I'm concerned. Wonder what Matt is doing for 2019. Maybe solo, maybe resting.
Jeff Lynne just announced a bunch of U.S. 19 dates...nothing local. Open for Folk Sunday. That’d be a fun get, could be a stretch with scheduling though :/
