seems to be a hiiiiigh end camping/fest experience featuring our loves Nate, MLV, glorietta, Shakey, wild child and more. takes place during sxsw and looks magical.
its also apparently limited to 500 people and starts at 500 bucks and (i mean this in the nicest way possible) feels a bit like folk fyre fest from the website. not that result will be the same and i would probably give a pinky to be there but still.

500 with complimentary drinks and food isn't bad these days, even with a tiny lineup.
Real thing to look into is the production company. Seems like they've at least put on successful events before, although the pictures of the two co-founders don't instill confidence, not to mention the lack of any other listed team members
Random thought: George Clinton announced he's retiring from touring after this year. Would love if the Mothership landed at the Fort.
It did for Jazz Fest last year
Damn, I always forget to internalize Jazz Fest line-ups since I never have the opportunity to go. Would be great if he made a return. Saw him last year and it was a fantastic show.

Sorry if he’s on your bingo board but I asked Andy Shauf when he plans on returning to Newport at his show tonight and he basically said he hasn’t been asked to come back yet... which is a travesty.
In other news, Haley Heynderickx was wonderful. She’ll be well received at the fort for sure.
Upcoming Shows: August 7: Green Day/Smashing Pumpkins/Rancid/The Linda Lindas August 30: Waxahatchee/Snail Mail/Tim Heidecker September 17: Pearl Jam/Glen Hansard September 24: Idles/English Teacher

They didn’t even try to book him after The Party...?

Maggie Rogers. Newport Festivals Foundation has made a donation on Maggie's behalf to The Girls Electronic Music Stars (GEMS) summer program at NYU – a 2-week experience for middle school girls ages 10-12. The generous grant will be used to sponsor 10 girls' tuition to attend the program. Girls will be given the scholarship to attend the program based on declared need for financial assistance.

Awesome!
Is this the poppiest act Newport has ever booked?
Don’t get me wrong, I love her new album. I love diversity at a festival that could easily lack diversity. And she seems like she gets the festival.
But aside from Rostam producing some of the beats, I fail to hear much folk. You could just as easily book Carly Rae Jepsen (and I hope they do!) or Miley Cyrus w/ Mark Ronson.

I’d put her more in line with Florence + the Machine and Sylvan Esso than those names.
I am completely underwhelmed by her. I saw her at Governors Ball in 2018, and she was...fine? She has a nice voice. I just don't get why she's being elevated over every other singer-songwriter now who basically does the type of music that would have been played on acoustic guitars and mid-range keyboards in coffee shops back in the day, but now gets put through the electronic, Greg Kurstin car wash so it sounds like just about every other pop song out there. I mean, I read it's supposed to be a big deal because she sampled the sound of a spoon clinking against a glass jar for "Alaska"...which, yay, I guess?
I don't know. Again, YMMV, and I'd never claim my tastes are the absolute measure of what's good. But I just find her totally uninspiring.

Agree with Strawman. I will say that I'm very biased here (huge Maggie fan), but would not compare to Carly Rae.
This short doc came out on her YouTube about a year ago. When I watched it back then, I immediately fell in love. Nearly died when she came out on stage with Mumford last year, because I wasn't sure when I'd ever see her live.
It's also fascinating to watch it now and see how she's changed since this film -- all the hype around her album and the immediate success and coverage of that success. She ends this film talking about how she now gets to go out and make her first album, and now "Back In My Body" is the closing track on Heard It in a Past Life. Full circle.

That's fair. I guess I'm out of the loop enough, I didn't know she's being touted as some revolutionary electro-singer/songwriter. I like her enough, nothing mindblowing, but she is a good supplement when I'm craving something in the Sylvan Esso vein.
Also, I like to see NFF branching out. I'm really hoping we see some hip hop at the fest this year, I think realistically it's the closest we have to what folk-revival music was in the 50s and 60s.

agreed. caught her last year, albeit in a festival setting, and it was underwhelming. love her story, but to my ears she just took what sylvan esso did and did it worse.

Maggie Rogers. Star Power. Regardless if she meets anyone’s definition of what the NFF is. Jay needs people like Maggie to sell the festival to future artists. Brandi sold it to Maggie. I’ll give her a shot. She will likely have some friends in tow.
I admit Maggie was on my short list. I get it that she is "poppy," but she earned her stripes last year and, as reddfox39 notes, Jay needs some star power to sell the show to future artists, though not sure how successful Roger Waters has been pitching the fest. Every athlete used to want to make it to "The Show" in New York; now its not as big a deal. For us, Newport is The Show, and we can't wrap our heads around the fact Bruce, Neil, Robert Plant, et al don't even make cameos. But for them, there are many good "shows" these days to have some fun.
Anyway, I'd rather listen to Maggie than Kace Musgraves. I don't get what is so wonderful about Kacey. She even sounds like Taylor Swift to me. I don't know how wide a net NFF should cast in finding talent. 'm still somewhat amazed that in the 60/100 anniversary of NFF I don't get a whiff of Arlo or Joan Baez. As Arlo stated last year, "they don't ask, but I understand they are going in a different direction." I'm OK with the direction Maggie Rogers takes us based on last year.

Check out her first 2 albums on Bandcamp. Her early sounds were very Newport friendly, and she plays guitar and banjo. Sadly, it seems that she doesn't ever play anything from these albums, which is a shame because there are some great songs there.

I wouldn’t be surprised if we maybe got one of these songs or she reworked some of her songs for the fest.
Plus, as was mentioned, there are a lot of guest opportunities for her. She’s assembled quite the Rolodex of talented friends the last couple years
Can't say that her music moves me all that much. I do think she seems to earn a lot of respect from fellow artists. Hamilton Leithauser and Rostam brought her out for their set last year and talked about how they brought her up to play with them in New York when they were touring in 2017 and she killed it. Pharrel, of course, in that viral YouTube video really respected her. My kids (tweens) like her, and they like Kacey Musgraves album a lot which is good because I like them not getting tired of me putting the Newport playlist on all the time. It makes for a happier house.

Not only is Damien Jurado grossly overdue to play this fest, he just announced a new album and it’s being put out by Mama Bird who also rep Courtney Marie Andrews and Haley Hendrickx. Maybe this will be the year. Aside from neil and Monsters of Folk, he’s probably my biggest hope. New album coming out is solo acoustic. Can’t wait.

Yes please!
Anna St. Louis is opening his tour dates (or at least the NYC show) and I'd love her as well.
