I am loving Fri and Sat so far, but would be fine skipping Sunday at this point. (That said, there’s a decent foundation there if it gets built upon with bands that aren’t Lake Street Dive.)

Newport Festivals Foundation has made a donation on behalf of Lake Street Dive to support The Institute for the Music Arts. Each summer IMA runs a series of residential music programs for girls and young women: four songwriting and ensemble performance-based programs (two sessions for teens and two for pre-teens) and a studio recording, producing and engineering program for young women from the ages of 16-24. IMA will use the donation from the Newport Festivals Foundation for scholarship and financial aid funds for their summer programs.
To celebrate the partnership between IMA, Lake Street Dive and Newport Festivals Foundation, four young women from IMA's summer programs will join Lake Street Dive for a performance at the Newport Folk Festival this summer.

That last part is really cool!
Yola is opening for Lake Street Dive after Newport, so I'm hoping she gets announced too
Anyone have any ideas for after shows? Think Lake Street Dive would take one? Are Deer Tick doing after shows again this year or are they taking off?
Hope they get something good at Jane Pickens.
Lukas Nelson and Promise of the Real would be a cool aftershow host
That'd be a great call. Can be one of the "never know what guests will show up" type of nights. I'd be down for that, for sure. He's really won me over the past couple of years between playing with Neil and his own solo sets.
Been in the middle of these Lake Street Dive spats for a while. Forget which year they first appeared at Newport, but they lived up to my expectations. Cool, breezy, a little hint of Manhattan Transfer by this wide-eyed bunch of folks sharing an apartment in Brooklyn. Caught a free park show that August, and they introduced their new keyboard player. They absolutely slayed! Hard rocking, uptempo, political, everything pushed to a limit not seen at Newport.
Then idk -- caught them two years ago at Clearwater Fest and it was like the soundcheck walk through. So boring until the Mavericks saved the evening. So I no longer know what to say, but considering some of the names that excite people who I can catch for tip money the rest of the year -- and for a reason -- I don't see why LSD causes such an uproar. I'm fine with it. Don't really care either way any more. Just hope they are not the penultimate act.
Was surprised to see the comment above re: Lyte moving only 20. Jumped in line early on public ticket day to get two extras, started in low 100's and sitting at 60 for the last few days. The biggest jump was right after xmas.
I was 50 in the queue for 2 tickets right after I got shut out. Got mine probably a month ago.
Perhaps it's the order for two Saturday tickets? Just checked and still sitting at #277. Hasn't moved. So sitting here with two three-days passes, and likely unable to attend Friday; 2 tix for Saturday and waiting...and 4 for Sunday. A bit messy. Perhaps a string of crummy announcements will induce people to sell. Ha.

Dearest Jay,
Please let Phil continue into the night on Friday and do a Newport dead jam at the Pickens, in the vein of Day of the Dead.
I can already see the guest list: Brandi Carlile, Jeff Tweedy, Lukas Nelson, Todd Snider, Sharon Van Etten, Bonny Light Horseman, Maggie Rogers, Lucius, Phosphorescent, Dessner Brothers, Kurt Vile, Cook Brothers, Billy Strings

I think that’s just it. Tip money bands can be steals. Newport crushes in this category - finding bands that will likely only get bigger. Not to mention, it’s easy to skip an act you don’t enjoy early in the day and not feel like you didn’t get your money worth.
On the other hand, an act like LSD takes a pretty big spot away, leaving one fewer spot for a band that hasn’t played Newport that I’d love to see (e.g., Local Natives, Grizzly Bear, War on Drugs) or a band I’d like to see return (Rod y Gab, Kurt Vile, Feist, etc.). As you said, it’s possible Newport would give them a penultimate spot (that’s a little ambitious, but not out of the realm of possibilities).
That said, that’s purely opinion. I know many of you like LSD. And I’m sure there would be several of you that would hate seeing one of the bands I mentioned on the lineup.

I could definitely see them being the penultimate act, I know they have a pretty strong following in the Northeast. I'd love to see a big name snagging the spot, but I wouldn't be surprised if Lake Street gets it. That being said, I think Lake Street will put on a great show for Newport
LSD might not have been there recently, but Rachel Price was there last year and she was much better with Vilray than when I saw LSD two weeks earlier. She also caused some controversy by singing a change is gonna come, though I had no issue with that.
I would be surprised if they were penultimate, they're not that big

That was just people complaining about her being the pick. It was already revealed by Jon B that he wanted her to be in it.
His set, his choice IMO
I thought she was great in that spot.
I missed her set at the fort. But saw the 2 of them at a show previously, and they were great.
I had a dream last night wherein Newport was done announcing the lineup but had a charity video where they gathered all of the artists together and as they went through the line of artists playing, the camera panned on ... not previously announced... Tom Waits. And everyone went crazy.
Has there been any info on what these special Sylvan Esso shows entail? Curious how they’ll be playing their tunes differently. Maybe it’d fit into Newport?
