Has there been any info on what these special Sylvan Esso shows entail? Curious how they’ll be playing their tunes differently. Maybe it’d fit into Newport?
I thought I read they would be doing re-workings of the "With" artist's songs and their own catalog? It does seem very Newport appropriate, though, with Mountain Man in it's entirety being featured through the run of shows.

keeping in mind all the "in jay we trust" and "patience" and "it'll all work out" platitudes:
- NEED MORE ANNOUNCEMENTS - NEED MORE NAMES - NEED MORE BANDS
in terms of the last one, interested in who people think will fill the larger name band slots. in 2017 we had wilco, avetts, dbt, fleet foxes, head & the heart, dr dog, whitney. in 2018 we had isbell, sturgill, courtney barnett, low cut connie, glorietta, jenny lewis (ok most of those aren't really bands but they rock). what are we getting this year?

can it be the national?
Would love the national but it looks like they're in Europe all July/August. They're free Newport weekend, but I'd still call it unlikely.
As for other bands, I'm not sure what the qualifications are but Raconteurs, Boygenius, Phosphorescent, Beirut, Kurt Vile, Lord Huron.
Plus Deer Tick and Dawes are both due to come back at some point. Maybe one will be there this year

As far as bands that rock, I think Lukas Nelson and Liz Cooper will be solid. But larger name bands will be interesting. Looking through the popular bingo submissions, not a lot of bands are near the top. The National would be awesome. If Josh Ritter did a set with the 400 Unit, that might scratch that "band" itch. We shall see!
Newport Festivals Foundation has made a donation on behalf of Ruston to purchase new instruments for Face The Music's Grace Note Project – a music-centric program that provides musicians newly in recovery a vehicle to give back. The project is to teach gratitude and recognize the gift of music and how using it for good helps heal those performing along with those who are experiencing the music.

I think we’ll have a better idea of the possibilities for the “bands who rock” category once XPNFest is announced. That’s where there is usually a lot of overlap.
Hop Along looks like a possibility this year with a set at Forecastle and nothing else scheduled after yet.
Still holding out for Better Oblivion Community Center.
I’d love a return by Trampled by Turtles or Rodrigo y Gabriela (both with newer albums).
I’d be happy to finally see Beirut (new album), Local Natives, or Grizzly Bear at the Fort. Or Vampire Weekend or The Ranconteurs (both with new albums) as a headliner.

Unfortunately, Lord Huron looks out based on their dates.
I've never left Newport disappointed, except when I miss an act because of conflicts. I don't expect to leave disappointed this year, but I suspect my conflicts will be easier to manage. "Mister Musgraves" has a pleasant enough voice, and I might even prefer to see him over Kacey, who I find throughly uninspiring and poppy. Reminds me of rock promoter Bill Graham saying he was shuttering the Fillmore because he was tired of record companies demanding secondary acts, and relatives.
Did we know about War and Treaty and Low-cut Connie as high energy acts or was it still a snooze-fest at this time last year? Throw me a bone...please. The Raconteurs, Kurt Vile, Dale Alvin and Jimmy Dale Gilmore; Calexico, The Mavericks, Grace Potter; I'll even take Ween to fill tis year's wacko slot. How about something totally from left field like Blood Orange. Or just give me Tom Waits. Waiting...

Yes War and Treaty. But last year definitely started out a bit stronger in general, for me at least

Gary Clark Jr. 10. Darlingside 11. Tyler Childers 12. Passenger 13. Hamilton Leithauser + Rostam 14. Phoebe Bridgers 15. The Lone Bellow 16. JD McPherson 17. Charlie Parr 18. Caamp 19. Jason Isbell & The 400 Unit 20. Nicole Atkins 21. Twain 22. This Is The Kit
They started Jan 31 and were three days a week. Then moved to 5 a week. This Is The Kit was announced on March 19

This is interesting because I know I was a lineup detractor at this point last year because I thought the lineup was weak on the rock bands / stomp and holler and heavy on the individual artists (many of whom were a bit quieter).
To be fair, I left last year saying I would not make the same mistake of doubting Jay again.
Looking back though, at this point last year we had:
1) indie folk (Caamp, Hamilton + Rostam, Phoebe, Courtney, etc.) 2) rare bookings (Hamilton + Rostam, Passenger) 3) and quite a few bands
With that said, I am expecting a bigger crescendo this year because the announcements started earlier. Many of the acts we’re going to be most excited to see are probably keeping late summer tour dates hush and might want to get through a winter tour of the northeast before getting announced.

I was thinking the same thing regarding the "bigger crescendo this year because the announcements started earlier."

I didn’t know RK music until yesterday. I’m also more likely to see his set, and skip KM set if there’s other sets to see.

Ruston Kelly puts on a good set, at least he did, 2 years ago. Drove out to Akron to see him open for Amanda Shires back then it was just him and another guy on guitar. Keep waiting for a Pittsburgh date. Can't wait for the dirt emo set.
