I thought they were alright the times I've seen them but definitely not anything noteworthy. And given that Newport's already pretty chilled out I don't think they'd be great there
Would take Car Seat or the Sheepdogs, but not sure how "folk" it would be for Newport
I saw Car Seat last month and it was easily a top 10-15 concert of my life. Will’s a genius, and the band he’s touring with (the opening band joins his to form a 7 piece ensemble) really reinvents the songs. I forget which one, but I do distinctively remember thinking that one of the songs was reminiscent of a Dawes jam (it had a folk rock tinge added live).
Some have been mentioned, but lots of new music out this week from potential Newport bookings:
The National The Black Keys Mac DeMarco Stephen Malkmus Andrew Bird Christian Lee Hutson (performed last year with Phoebe and Jenny; Phoebe is producing his new album) Jenny Lewis The Mountain Goats Rodrigo y Gabriela Hozier (okay, this takes us into last week)

hate to be the negative one and I’ll hold out judgement til I do some more listening but...isn’t adding various marleys to fill a lineup something that far lesser festivals do?

It is. I assume because they’re a value booking with their instant name recognition. That said, I don’t think it has to be limited to that.
But if we’re thinking Stephen is a parallel booking to last year’s Toots or Ben Harper bookings, I’d take last year’s over this year’s for sure. But we still have time. Although I’m worrying that Sunday late day might have very little for me with Lake Street Dive and Stephen Marley.
6 straight announcements I have minimal to no interest in seeing...
Not losing faith yet but c'mon Newport
In Jay We Trust.
With that said, every festival has to have a bad year every so often, right? I can’t think of one fest that hasn’t. So far Jay has delivered every year. In fact, I’d say every lineup since 2008 has been impressive (I could see someone arguing against 2011 when considering it against the next few years’ lineups). Are we due for a lackluster year? Do we keep our expectations too high?
(After last year, I promised not to doubt. So I’m still expecting a killer lineup when all is said and done this year. But with fewer announcements per week, weeks without anything I’m excited by move so much slower. And I’m not loving the move from band filled lineups dominated by indie-folk (circa 2012-2014) to more singer-songwriter dominated lineups that traverse a more varied set of folk subgenres.)

Also, assuming no Museum Stage announcements so far and a similar schedule to last year, next week will mark the half way point of the lineup announcements.
A positive -- tickets on Stub Hub have remained reasonable. With the pre-sale three-day thingy, and not splitting tickets, my request for 2 additional tix on Saturday via Lyte has moved 25 spots since November; still in the 270's. Yikes.
By this time last year there were bands I had never heard of that excited me (War and Treaty), that I couldn't wait to share (Low-cut Connie), but now I'm salivating over other festivals, and questioning my decision not to invest some of my concert money on Jackson Browne/Lucius...Grace Potter...and several others. Think I'll "splurge" on Loudon Wainwright III /Suzzy Roche / Lucy Wainwright Roche. Those are the kind of veterans that should occasionally appear at Newport.
Interesting -- looked back to this time last year; we were on page 44 with a perceptible buzz in this room. Still, as usual, people bemoaning the schedule a bit. Yet it seems only one-third of the acts had been announced. Can't imagine the budget has been busted by the bookings thus far, so I'm certain there will be some nice surprises coming. It's just that the rollouts and order the announced acts have lost their novelty for me, and causing some inconvenience. NFF has the luxury of knowing all the tickets are already sold. And maybe that helps them with acts who cannot yet be named.
I suspect we're in for an amazing weekend of music at NFF. I've learned to never underestimate this festival and I'm not about to start now. When the lineup is finalized there will be conflicts as usual. There will be artists not to your taste. But there will be plenty of fans who love them. You'll be having a ball at a differnt stage. There will be sets you wished you'd caught. There will be loads of surprises. There will be a whole lineups worth of performers who will show up who weren't even on the official lineup. If Newports not for you don't go. Plenty are waiting. There've been years I had doubts but there hasn't been a single day I haven't left feeling exilerated but what happened that day.
The new Nick Waterhouse and Stella Donnelly albums are goodies. They'd both be good fits for Newport, but Stella is playing Fuji Rock on Sunday, so I'd be pretty surprised if she swung both fests.

I'm only a few songs in but so far the new Meat Puppets album is great. I've never listened to them outside of Lake of Fire and Plateau because of Nirvana. They would easily fit into the J. Mascis, Violent Femmes, Pixies grouping.
Upcoming Shows: August 7: Green Day/Smashing Pumpkins/Rancid/The Linda Lindas August 30: Waxahatchee/Snail Mail/Tim Heidecker September 17: Pearl Jam/Glen Hansard September 24: Idles/English Teacher

That makes sense. We didn’t get the folk punk booking last year, did we? I hope they bring back that slot, whether it be more modern (Frank Turner, Gogol, Brian Fallon) or old school (Violent Femmes, J Mascis, Pixies, Patti Smith).
Local Natives announced a new album. First tracks a little poppier than their original stuff (akin to their last album); but incredibly catchy (I’m loving “When Am I Gonna Lose You”) and still within the folk genre.
I’m still amazed that Newport booked Local Natives to headline their west coast fest, but haven’t yet booked them at the Fort. Pretty sure the only big act that was booked for Way Over Yonder and had/has not played in Newport.

Was thinking a bit about the lack of excitement around the lineup this year as compared to last year (even though last year there was plenty of whinging about the artists announced.)
I think the slower pace certainly has a huge impact. I looked back on who was announced this year and realized that I am excited for the same ratio as I was last year, it's just that i have had months to adjust my expectations and accept that Jeff Tweedy, Bonny Light Horseman, "If I Had a Song", Phil Lesh, and Mountain Man are all going to be great sets that I won't want to miss. I am loving JS Ondara and Jade Bird who I hadn't heard of before their introduction via Newport.
It is all about expectations management and if you tell people too early that they are going to get something, within a couple of months they begin to feel like they deserve to have it and want something more.
One other factor that I miss this year. They aren't tweeting the lyric an hour before announcing the artist. While it typically doesn't matter, it made it a little game and on some occasions created an air of mystery around who/what the artist might be thus increasing the overall joy of the announcement.

Agreed, I think this plays a big part. I'm liking the lineup so far, but two announcements a week isn't doing them any favors. They are due for an exciting announcement this week, be it something unique or a big name.
Also, I wonder when/if they will increase the number of announcements per week? Looks like everything has been announced by the end of April or beginning of May in years past. At this rate, we would be well into June before it's all said and done.
