First 5 acts announced for Calgary Folk Fest (same weekend as Newport): Nathaniel Rateliff and the Night Sweats, Sharon Van Etten, Lucius, Sheila E and Asleep at the Wheel.

Crossing my fingers for Sharon
The biggest surprise of the fest for me last year was Sharon popping out during Deer Tick’s final aftershow.
I had not heard of or seen her around the fest at all (usually there are guest opportunities during the fest as well). Was she hanging out as a fan all weekend long? Was she just passing through town that Sunday?
We’re an act away from having 1/2 of the lineup. Since rolling announcements started (2013?), I think it’s reasonable to say that this is the weakest first 1/2 (or any half) of the lineup yet.

Starting to get a little bummed lol. This is my first Newport and I would always watch the announcements and be blown away by the lineups and now I pull the trigger and they did get some good shit for me, but the last 8 or so have not been exciting. Tweedy is big for me and there’s some solid up and comers, Haley Hendrickx, Jade Bird, but i’m Hoping the last half ramps up a bit.
This has been said before but I don’t think any of these artists have broken their budget yet, meaning that Jay is obviously pulling back some big names to announces later (think of the last stretch of announcements in 2016). The first half may be disappointing but In Jay We Trust.
If Pres Hall is back again, we have 1/2 the lineup. Hoping for a strong finish that includes Ryan Bingham, Susto, Sylvan Esso (WITH), Calexico/Iron & Wine, and one exciting headliner (e.g., Neil, Bruce, the National)

I'm not worried about big names, the ones we have so far are great, and I think there are more great ones coming. I'm worried about how incredibly boring the undercard is starting to look. Very few of these bookings are people doing the most interesting things within the folk sphere right now and pushing the genre forward. That's the booking strategy that earned Jay the trust we have in him and the last 7 announcements are decidedly not that.
Amy Ray has an album out that features quite a few songs with some of your favorite folk alum: Phil Cook, Brad Cook, Justin Vernon, Susan Tedeschi, among others

This.
Right now, I’m worried about having to choose between Lake Street Dive on the main stage and Stephen Marley in the Quad. And this’ll probably be about 4-5 PM in a pretty prime time spot.

I’m not hoping for BIG names, just better smaller names. If Robert Ellis, Phosphorescent, and Sharon Von Ettan are on the bill as expected, I will breathe easier.

Uh oh... that’s not good either (from a unique festival perspective; if I lived in the area, I’d be happy enough with it. The folk crossover is a lot of what we already have or bands that were booked last year.)

I'm guessing we get Leon Bridges, Phosphorescent, Justin Townes Earle, The Wild Reeds, and Caroline Rose. Maybe Edie Brickell
I hope Amy Ray is our Edie Brickell. Nothing against either of them; I like the diversity one brings, but don’t need a second dose of early 90s pop alt folk.

I was hoping for this announcement! Goodnight Tender and Holler are excellent albums. Now I'm just waiting for Josh Ritter (and a ticket! #447 in the Lyte queue and nervous!)
I haven't done as much listening to the unfamiliar (to me) artists in the lineup as I would like, but so far really like Cedric Burnside and JS Ondara. Last year was my first time and even though I didn't know a large portion of the artists, I had a blast and came away a true believer. I'm sure this year will be amazing.

I'm sure i'll like a lot of the recent names but am just unfamiliar with them right now. Definitely waiting for the next "WOW" name to drop. I have faith, though. There's always so much good music overflowing at this festival. Even if I get a timeslot without something I love it just lets me get closer for the next show.

Listened to her for the first time yesterday, really liking Goodnight Tender and Holler too.
Hiss Golden Messenger just announced for Pittsburgh June 6th. Guessing more dates are coming, but I can't find any official announcement except on venue page.
