Dammit. I wanted to stay off here but its an addictive hobby for me. I don't know Katy. I'm sure she's good people. I don't react well to name calling even if they're harmless enough ones. I was out of order implying reasons she was doing so. None of my business. For that i'm sorry. I failed completely at keeping it positive which ironically i was trying to do. To the guy who wanted a list of Uk/Irish insults, heres one. I was a complete gobshite
Everyone gets heated at times. Katy (like most of us here) gets into it with people from time to time but it's mostly out of passion. Having attended multiple Newport Folk Fest's with her I can tell you she's a big fan of the festival and music that they put out. Girl's got Woody Guthrie ink on her skin. Sometimes it's tough to read tone and how serious someone is being online and we've all been there.
And one thing I would say about people who may be feeling let down by some of these names.....it could be that we've become so spoiled with how awesome the lineups have been the last few years. There's still lots of wow factor on this year for me (Can't believe we're getting Phil and Trey! Finally getting to see Todd Sniderat the fort excites me) but not everyone can win every year, I guess.
I think the comment that irks me is if it's not "Dolly, Eddie, Paul, Neil every other announcement is causing zero excitement" or something to that effect.... that's not "critique" to me that seems straight up spoiled, and it's not about the "vibes man" it's about walking out of the venue each night wondering if it was worth "it". In short if you think Newport is lame now, Which festival lineup do you like better for the size?
I remember when this thread was about turning other folk fans on to new music

Yeah, I understand that. I do think that every year of the past few years (on this forum) has had moments of "This is good, but I preferred a previous year more" by our members while the rolling lineup comes out but then when the full lineup is out/the festival happens people come around more on the quality of the lineup. I have heard so many positive stories about the times had in the museum by artists who people either didn't know well or didn't expect to be wowed by. Every year has a handful of "can't see anywhere else" moments and shows that I used to look to Bonnaroo for. Now Newport gets the acts that aren't common or are Newport exclusive and they tend to be noteworthy sets.
I doubt most of the regulars in this thread actually think Newport is lame now but maybe just aren't getting the acts they were hoping for this year that seem to be showing up at other fests. That said, we don't have the full lineup so who knows what else we have in store?
I do think the thread is still helpful in turning people onto new music. For a lot of the names I don't know I tend to defer to this thread for people's favorite songs or albums or just general news about who is solid (even if they aren't scheduled for Newport). Hopefully things stay that way.

all good point and thanks for being a calming voice of reason. I also think it's always cooler to know who people would rather see if they don't like things so far. Always easy to be a critic but as Newport always says if we want someone to be there use social media to tell that artist to come
Like I said previously, I think this years bookings so far have been awesome, and I wish I could go more than one day this year. This has been my favorite rollout in many years.

lol every year I flood the Newport social media with Felice Brothers and Todd Snider. This year we got Snider coming and I couldn't be happier about it. I know the Felice's will be back at some point since they have had some memorable sets. I wish I could have been at the one where the power went out and they hopped offstage to dance in the mud with the audience.
Don't know what this is. Is it a venue in the city?
Yeah it’s in Newport.
They use it for a Friday Night Concert for Jazz Fest. They put chairs on the lawn too.
Oooo that looks fancy. So does NJF use it for night shows? Is there a curfew or anything? I think it would be cool to add another option considering the current ones sell out fast. Though it seems like you'd want a bigger artist to play this so not sure how easy to work out it would be.

They just use it for Friday Night after the fest gets out.
Very on brand booking for NFF. First time he’s played? If so, a bit surprising it took so long.
With that said, not sure if I can continue to get excited for *insert person’s name* announcements moving forward unless that person is Dolly, Bruce, Neil, Eddie, or Paul.
This last sentence is what's wrong with so much of this thread. Really????
I’m pretty sure you misinterpreted my post. I’m not only interested in those big names and anything less than Bruce disappoints me. I just simply have a musical preference for bands over singer songwriters and/or solo acts (with those listed being exceptions). Wilco... I love. Jeff Tweedy... I could take or leave. The amount of off key singing and missed chords in Trey’s last solo NFF set is cringeworthy (to be fair, it was one of his first shows out of rehab I believe) - singing along as a Phish fan would be great... but trying to win over a new casual fan... just don’t see it.
I like watching a band and thinking about how each member contributed in some way to the songwriting process and has been around through the evolution of the band in some capacity. I like seeing Nels and Jeff vibe together in unison on stage. It’s not always the case (eg. Brandi Carlile, Sturgill Simpson, Langhorn Slim vs Mandolin Orange, Darlingside), but bands also often bring that “ready to dance/ready to rock” vibe I love getting from festivals (even folk festivals).
I also know that booking singer songwriters or solo acts can often be a way fests reduce costs; and it makes me wonder if that’s the case when I see such a *person’s name* dominated lineup so far.
I look at the number of bands on the 2011/2012/2013/2014 lineups and see My Morning Jacket and Wilco and Deer Tick and Band of Horses, etc etc. and I’ve noticed Newport moving in a trend away from that in recent years. In some ways, back to their roots, so I can’t fault them for that. Indie folk isn’t trending in 2019 like it was in 2012.
I’ve stated numerous times in this thread that I no longer doubt Jay or that this will be an amazing time. But I think in any setting where the festival asks you to purchase blind, you’ve now taken a minor stake in the fest itself, and are free to make comments on it. I haven’t once said this is a bad lineup ... simply made my own requests for acts as we all do. Additionally... I really like every single person from this forum that I ever met at the fest. And happy that I keep in Facebook contact as well with quite a few of you. My posts are never to “whine” - or try to kill someone else’s mojo - just engage in the typical subjective discourse that I thought music forums were for.

I recommended the stadium on a post earlier this year or late last about how Newport could expand. Seems like a good place for a band that wants to curate their own show. Wasn't that a proposal by the National last year (with an acceptance by Jay)? Would be a good fit. Newport circa Forest Hills. One never knows, do one?
Night Bird back. Guess I have to step in the sh*t, too, as some of my posts can come off whiny.
Here's my take -- this room is addictive, it stirs the excitement, it helps us share new music (loved that I could talk about Low-cut Connie and someone could tell me about Passenger), and OK let off a little steam. Thought Passenger would be so not for me, and found him to be everything that I loved about Newport last year, and folk musicians in general. I mean, busking after his performance! And sometimes questioning announcements is fine; I never go on Facebook anymore because its so, I agree, me too, I agree, me too. And besides, my creditor's might find me there.
When I first started attending the fest about 6 years ago, all I knew about traditional folk was The Weavers, Arlo, Christine Lavin, English murder ballads, and some indie stuff on WFUV. Sat in the motel the night before, looked at some newspaper suggestions, a former student texted me to catch some guy who whistles and Brandi someone. And considering I was at Newport Jazz in NY, the opening week of CBGB, and Led Zeppelin for a buck in Central Park, that weekend was one of my great music experiences. Yeah, got a little spoiled over the years by the likes of James Taylor. If some complaining about the bookings bothers Jay, he's a big boy who can take it, and knows what he's doing. I have complained "mostly" about the rollout because it messes a bit with my concert ticket buying and luring two people to join us on Saturday and Sunday. But that's just nitpicking.
The festival will respond over the tiniest issues and questions. Worried about my Lyte number for Saturday, and they contacted me. Imagine Live Nation reaching out except with an open hand? So glad everyone is here, on board, Ok with with white guys singing about trains, and black women singing Celtic songs. It's folk, man. It's community music. David Byrne would wonder why we don't do some fan drum circles and sing-alongs. Mmmh...David Byrne. The Raconteurs. Just saying'

I don’t remember this. The National asked about it? Was that on Twitter?
Sharon Van Etten is at Interstellar Rodeo in Edmonton on Folk Friday. Hopefully she can get back to this side of the country by weekend.
She is also playing Calgary Folk Festival that weekend, though that runs from Thursday to Sunday, so she is still potentially available Saturday or Sunday.
Similarly, Nathaniel Rateliff is playing both fests, it looks like Saturday at Calgary Folk and Sunday at Interstellar.

Speaking of Lyte, I've heard that the line moves quicker closer to the festival. Is that true? Sorry about the dumb question, I'm kind of new at Lyte, but love the idea!
I have a request for a ticket in for Sunday, but I'm #217 in line But, I remain optimistic because I started around #232 and have jumped up considerably since signing up. At least I got my Friday ticket fulfilled already!

You'll get it, and even if you don't get it through Lyte, there are ALWAYS folks selling tickets at the gate. If you'll already be there Friday and Saturday, just plan on Sunday happening.
I'm really happy about this announcement, actually! I haven't seen her in years - the last time I saw her was with my mom back in 2006 (Rest in Peace) <3

You'll definitely get in. I signed up two weeks before the fest last year and idk where I started in line (i think in the 300s?) but I got my tickets by Tuesday or Wednesday before the fest. I wouldn't stress about it until July at the earliest

I was lukewarm about seeing her during the Outlaw Festival date I was going to. She was playing in the middle of the day/lineup and while I don't dislike her I never really listened to albums of hers. Just remembered a handful of hits that everybody knows.
She killed it. Great set and way better than I anticipated it to be. This will be a great set with a few good singalongs.

Thank you @strawman and shinola90 - I really appreciate the feedback and positivity!
As for potential artists that could be added, does anyone else think that we might see Larkin Poe this year? I'm actually really surprised they haven't played there yet besides the collaboration with Elvis Costello in 2016! It looks like they have that entire weekend open in their tour schedule, and they're playing the Peach Music Festival in Scranton, PA on Thursday, July 25th.
There’s definitely potential for main stage girl-power pop country...
Amy Ray Band -> I’m With Her -> Kacey Musgraves -> Sheryl Crow
Would be a bit weird to finish that up with some men. So I’m going to second Sheryl as headliner unless Dolly, Alison Krauss, Emmylou, or Florence is there (but Florence is a bit off brand for that day). Or the Highwomen is happening (which can happen now on Friday now that we know Margo is not in the band)
