Holy shit I never would have though this hit that would be amazing. I feel like that would be a pretty out of bounds booking for jay though. The closest I could think that they’ve booked would be Khruangbin but that makes more sense to me at the folk fest than Gizz. But I fully support it
I think I've said this a couple times, but I saw someone wearing a Gizz shirt at Newport once right after having a discussion about what kind of out-of-the-box bookings they could get and then had the idea for Gizz to do a set where they play their acoustic album Paper Mache Dream Balloon in full. But these two songs would also fit great. Agreed it doesn't feel like a Jay booking, but I can still hope.
I've worn a murlocs short the last few years. if they could pull it off it almost feels like they're a better fit than gizz.

Absolutely, I mean they could just do an acoustic set and play from all over. Also it feels very GiZZ for them to do a 12 minute acoustic Rattlesnake
I have to stop coming to this room. You guys posting videos of songs I never heard...now I want all these acts. Never liked the the name Boygenius; reminds me of the smart alecks who graded better than a D in high school chemistry. That song brought chills. Never heard of the Dodos, but reminds me of groups I would catch at the old Bottom Line in the Village "back in the day. And King Grizzard. Wow, love those cuts.
A thought -- wouldn't Stephen Stills mean that we've now seen CSN?
FYI- Brandi announced that Mavis will be her guest at MSG on Sept 14th, so if you are like me and waited to get tickets to the Apollo you can still see some faves.
I was lukewarm about seeing her during the Outlaw Festival date I was going to. She was playing in the middle of the day/lineup and while I don't dislike her I never really listened to albums of hers. Just remembered a handful of hits that everybody knows.
She killed it. Great set and way better than I anticipated it to be. This will be a great set with a few good singalongs.
Friday's lineup is looking like Lucas is bringing the Outlaw Music Festival to Newport. It's even a reunion of other year's Outlaw artists. Farmaid was amazing last year. I'm expecting Friday to be one to remember even if Willie isn't there. There seems to be endless collaboration videos out there of newport and outlaw regulars. Even saw one of Sheryl and Brandi. Heres a few others.

Friday is interesting because there are a bunch of friends booked for that day. While it does look like an Outlaw Music Fest day, I still think Brandi, as a new Board of Advisors member, is pulling the strings. Between collabs with Kacey and Sheryl, Sheryl and Brandi’s banter back and forth on social media (they’re both supporting Heart but joked about how their dates do not overlap), and the fact that in the fall, Brandi interviewed Amy Ray re: her new solo album.

Honestly, I think you’re right and that it’ll be The Highwomen as the headliner. Sheryl Crow is a contributing artist (bass) and she was just announced on Thursday

Makes sense to have it be an Outlaw Music fest day. They are promoting one of the Mountain Jam days as that, as well so it wouldn't be a big surprise. Should be good.

At this point, not knowing what this band consists of, what type of band, original music or covers, it’d be odd to assume that band would headline. Yeah I think they’ll be there, but don’t think they will be headlining.

I’m sure you’re right. I’m not making any assumptions, nor claiming to have any knowledge. It’s just fun to speculate

You're probably right about Brandi's influence behind the scenes. Lucas must have enjoyed Newport to come back. Lucas is at his best when collaborating with lots of artist friends so I think he'll enjoy it even more this year. Going back to Brandi. I'm real happy she's working with Newport. When she's not touring and being a great Mom she's helping the less fortunate. Her and Newport are a good fit. - Also. Theres a clip of her at Newport on the recent CBS news bit. Learned a lot about her world view in it. I think she's having a big influence on Newport.

Right now, Sheryl Crow is our headliner and well deserving of it. IMO of course.
I think you could argue Kacey is the bigger booking so far for Friday.
I kind of recall seeing somewhere Kacey being billed higher than Sheryl. Kacey recorded an album at Sheryl's home studio drinking Guinness on tap planning her wedding to Ruston Kelly. I think they're going to have a ball at Newport.
Better Community is in town, but it sold out before I was able to get a ticket. Decided against trying to buy a ticket off Facebook since I got other stuff coming this Spring. Hoping they get announced for Newport soon.

beaker or anyone else who has seen Better Oblivion on tour - did you happen to notice if they were doing show/tour posters? I likely won't get to the NY show tomorrow until after the doors open/openers start so wanted to know what i'm in for.

I actually just got a poster...only had a couple on the table left though. Maybe they have more.

Thanks! Was it for the whole tour or did it specify your show date/venue?

Sheryl is for sure more legendary than Kacey.
Definitely yes. I think Kacey would agree. Kacey is hot right now thats all. I'm way more excited to see Sheryl. Kacey hasn't written songs the caliber of The Difficult Kind and Run Baby Run in my opinion.

GONNA SOAK UP THE SUN
😂 😂 Yeah. Sheryl, Kacey like Katy Perry know how to make a buck with pop tart songs aimed at a lucrative market. But Sheryl could turn right around and drop songs that stand up the anything. The two i mentioned come to mind. Fuck it the beatles early career was all boy band cheesy pop but didn't mean they were shit musicians and performers. Its what Epstein wanted them to do to get famous. I ain't comparing them as artists obviously. Just what they did. My kid loves Post Malone who I hate. Then at the Grammys I saw him sing acoustic with a guitar and he was actually good. Go figure.

Kacey’s music is more delightfully cheesy than pop tart, IMO. I can’t point really to any other pop country musician doing the same thing she’s doing; probably why you don’t hear much of her on country radio, although that may have changed with her latest wins). It doesn’t help she also sings about topics that are frowned upon in the Nashville country music scene. She’s got those deep ballads as well, if that’s your interest, beyond the poppier stuff.
But in some ways it’s worth comparing their two careers; I think there’s a lot of overlap. And it’ll be fun watching one play into the other regardless of who is first.
