That's cool. Your choice. Maybe you should do that then if this doesn't seem worth it. I'll get more than my money's worth at this festival. It's much easier and more convenient to see these acts in one place when I'm already off work and at the location. I'm sure I could catch many of these acts when they come around my way for cheap but then the cost of travel and hassle for time off/work day shows make it not worth it for me. Convenience is king.
There are 37 announced acts currently. Let's just say EVERY act would cost you a $15 ticket (even though we know that's obviously not the case). It's still cheaper and more convenient (and arguably more special with chances of guests and surprise sets) to get a ticket to this festival. It's over $550 if you paid $15 for each act here.
People always use the "I can catch most of these acts at local shows" argument but simplify it as if it's way easier to see 37 separate shows and not spend any money on things besides the ticket. It's fine if you aren't that into the lineup but I still don't really care whether the festival paid more or less than previous years.

For a lot of people, paying $200-300+ for lodging plus the price of the tix plus a day off from work is not more convenient. Obviously people’s values and lifestyles differ, but I think it’s totally reasonable for people to factor in the financial value of the weekend. It ain’t charity (even if some of the proceeds go to charity). also, saying it’s 37 shows is overlooking the fact that most people can only go to 1 show at a time, not all three, unless Dumbledore gave you a time-turner.
I think one of the things that makes this line up a bit more contentious so far is that the headliners seem a bit more ambiguous. Like, some people see Phil Leah and are like “heck yeah” and other people are like “no way, it’s Kacey” and then some people seem surprised that either would be the headliner; whereas with a band like Alabama Shakes, they’re place at the top is more clear, regardless of if you’re stoked for them or not.
All this being said, I’m much more hyped for this year’s line up so far than I was for last years.

All good points. I definitely am guilty of also simplifying matters a bit in terms of cost so your stuff about the lodging and time off is also relevant.
I just feel like whenever I heard the "I can catch all/most of these acts at local shows so this lineup isn't doing it for me" (not necessarily what jongilbert is saying....i'm speaking generally now) I never fully agreed with it. The festival setting introduces a special factor for a lot of shows. As I mentioned, you're more likely to get special guests, surprise sets, and sometimes a more passionate performance from artists at a festival. So whether or not I could see a lot of acts on a lineup at a local gig never really comes up as a better option to me.
That said, I do think that every year the rolling lineup tends to make the lineup seem less special at times but then by the end it usually knocks it out of the park. This festival in particular with the special sets (For Pete's Sake, Dawes & friends, past unique sets) is what I look forward to the most. And I won't get stuff like that anywhere else.

have any of you ever been to the Clearwater Festival in Beacon, NY? I'm considering going mostly because I live close and I don't have any other festivals aside from Newport lined up and the Lone Bellow & Mavis are playing. What are our thoughts on the Lone Bellow being announced for Newport?
'13 Bonnaroo, Mountain Jam, Boston Calling '14 Mountain Jam, Boston Calling '15 Bonnaroo, Mountain Jam, Gathering of the Vibes, Boston Calling '16 Mountain Jam, Firefly, Newport Folk Fest '17 Mountain Jam, Newport Folk Fest, Boston Calling '18 Mountain Jam, Newport Folk Fest '19 Newport Folk Fest '22 Newport Folk Fest
Figured Rhiannon would get announced at some point or another. Don't hear much about Alice Merton in here, perhaps because she is so tied to her one hit that it gets tiresome, but she has some terrific songs and Newport is one of the larger fests she has not played -- with a possible East coast gap in her schedule at that time.
Btw -- anyone attend the Sea. Here. Now. fest last year? Been toying with attending. Curious whether its a drunk fest, or a place where people appreciate music. Interesting mix of acts.
(And suddenly I can't insert images)
I went last year, during the day it was very enjoyable but as night fell it turned into a bro fest. We had the ability to reenter 3 times a day so if you wanted to drink all day you would leave and go to the bar outside the gate for cheap drinks or you could stay in and walk right up to stages and enjoy the show. I really only dealt with the crowd during the social d set but could definitely see that a bunch of people were wasted as I was leaving and everyone else was going to watch jack johnson.

The budget they have for artists for all three days is "equal to what one headliner gets paid at almost any other festival"
Avg headliner is between 500-700k at festivals that are 30k people a day and under
Phil+Kasey+ Sheryl would equal this entire amount on any other festival EASY but that's naming only three artists on one day of Newport which has only 10k people ie intimate and to me the one of a kind sets and collaborations are as they say...priceless
The fact that book the talent they do year in and year out is a straight up miracle and is the big reason they win festival of the year award voted on by people in the business.
also I think a lot of people have very short memories. When you look back and see say... Courtney Barnett on the lineup 4 years ago well...she wasn't as well know as she is now...she was more like Liz Cooper sized but we all look at the lineup from a few years ago and think it was so much more "Stacked" but this is hindsight. Give the new artists their due now and be what the festivals always brag about its fans... "early adopters"

Never been, but I love Beacon so now I'm also considering heading up for Mavis and The Lone Bellow
The Lone Bellow just played last year, so I'd say chances are on the slim side they're back. Unless they've got a new album ready or potentially if they wanted to do one of their acoustic trio shows on the harbor stage
Could see them being around the fest though, and maybe as a part of If I Had a Song

Not really disputing your bigger point but she was definitely bigger than Liz Cooper is, and had a fuck ton of buzz that year. Nilufer Yanya or Lucy Dacus seem like better comparisons and even those 2 aren't what Courtney was in 2015.
If you don't mind me asking what specifically did you try to check out? Studio albums? Old or new stuff? Obviously not every artist will hook other people but I feel like Todd is such a good songwriter and also entertainer/storyteller that I want to spread his work. If I had checked out his early studio material I never would have liked him like I do now.
I just went on Spotify and did a shuffle through his music, I’ll check the early stuff and see what’s up.

if you're ever in Nashville you'd know how much Buzz Liz has esp. amongst musicians but yes thank you for better examples of my point.

Regarding the lineup so far, I am a bit puzzled by the announcements. It just seems bizarre (to me, at least) that they'd announce a ton of the bigger, more well-known names in March, while announcing mostly smaller acts/artists in April.
I'm sure a lot of these artists that have been announced this month (so far) are great, but I don't think they're helping build more momentum and excitement for the festival. Compare the amount of likes and reactions on Facebook to literally almost any artist announced this month and compare it with March when they announced Dawes & Friends, Sheryl Crow, Trey Anastasio, for example.
January was also a pretty big month too for announcements, I feel. We're about halfway through the month for announcements, so I'm hoping they're saving some of the best for last. When do you all think we'll have the final lineup by? Mid-May?
I'm still very much looking forward to coming back to the Fort this year though, make no mistake! I also love discovering new artists, and it's one of my favorite aspects about this festival.

Margo Price played the museum a year before anyone knew who she was
Hozier on the Harbor Stage
The Head & the Heart on the Harbor Stage
etc etc
also thinks it's funny how many people asking for repeats like iron & Wine or Gillian vs how many people are like bring in some new names!!!

I get what you're saying but one thing NFF is not is predictable
BTW I happen to think Lucy Dacus and Our Native Daughters (I think this is the only show announced so far) are a pretty big deal and I also think the FB crowd trends much much older than twitter or Instagram where someone like Lucy had more likes or the same amount as Trey

I'm sure there are some contracts and deals in place that require Newport to wait a while before announcing certain acts. Wasn't that part of the reason we didn't know about Roger Waters or some other acts until the day of?

I think most of us ask for a good mix, but also this year's lineup already has a bunch of new names on it, so I think we also want to see some of the big tentpoles in there.
I'm with you on Iron & Wine, but Gillian hasn't played an actual set since 2011 and is one of the best songwriters of our time, that seems like a fair enough repeat to ask for.

4 spots left for Saturday and I’m hoping for some bigger names. It feels like a “new music discovery day” for me, even though Saturday should be the big day for this festival. Maggie is good, but doesnt have the “wow” factor. Dawes playing an entire album without many of their “hits” isn’t that exciting and Jeff Tweedy solo... eh. Even the Sheryl Crow announcement is nice to see for Friday, but she was good 20 years ago. Amy Ray Band ... same thing. Brand new songs from a singer that was relevant 20 years ago. We drive up from Philly every year, and it’s a $$$$ 5 day vacation for 4 people. Just not feeling the excitement this year with this lineup .... BUT I’m sure it will all work out.
Béla Fleck just added Massachusetts dates starting on 7/30. I think we can assume him to bring his banjo on Sunday...Maybe for the Pete set.
I went to a concert for Pete a couple weeks after he died in NYC where they awarded him the Woody Guthrie prize posthumously, and Bela Fleck was a surprise guest, along with Steve Martin. Steve Martin would be an interesting name to show up at Newport, now that I think about.

That’s funny, I never considered him as a possibility, but his banjo skills would definitely be appreciated at NFF and he’d also kind of fit the “novelty” booking they’ve been having recently, although I think his music is more straight-faced and sincere, rather than comedic. But I’m not really sure.

Yeah, his music solo and with the Steep Canyon Rangers is straightforward, I've seen them a couple times and there wasn't any comedy involved. He's a really excellent player though.

I think Steve Martin played the Newport Folk Festival in 2010 with Steep Canyon Rangers

Been there about 8 times over the past 25 years and well worth a one-day visit. If Newport has a laid back vibe, Clearwater is sitting on the porch with Andy after an Aunt Bea dinner.
I recommend it with caveats -- it's a smaller locale, the crowds are smaller and a bit older, the main acts are a step below Newport," and I just thought it was over after so many empty patches at the main stage last year. On the other hand, I got to stand under a tree with Rhiannon Giddens and a dozen people, as she told stories and played an intimate acoustic set before taking to the main stage with a smoking band. I didn't get pushed around once standing up front with to see the Mavericks, who put on a great show; and I decided to run off with Dave Allen and Jimmie Dale Gilmore after their set. The river is beautiful; you can go on the boat; and a singer will think nothing of giving you his ticket to fetch a guitar case from the performer's tent. It's that laid back.
The downside -- a smaller crowd can be intimate; it can also cause some acts to mail in a performance (ahem, Lake Street Dive?). if you want the big tent names, they will be few and far between. This is primarily a folk/grassroots concert of the old and new -- always Paxton and Chapin; Amram and Ani DiFranco; and an Arlo, Josh White, Langhorn Slim, or Punch Brothers thrown in. Locals acts that would play the Museum will be on the smaller stages. But was very happy to see a group like Upstate (Rubdown) after catching them busking in Washington Square Park.
If NFF does wonders with their dollar budget, Pete and Toshi must have simply offered a big thank you to pull in their acts; their producers work with cents on the dollar. Still, I've always felt that if Bruce is to make a surprise appearance it will be at Clearwater, truly Pete Seeger's landing spot. (and was a little irked he didn't come to their aid when they had to cancel the fest a few years ago).
Fewer big names this year than ever, but let's see who Mavis brings. One big plus -- you can pick the day you want to attend, and it doesn't sell out. You can camp there. And many performers play both days making it easier to choose. And, if the whim hits you, bring a guitar, sit under a tree, and you'll get a small following.
That's cool. Your choice. Maybe you should do that then if this doesn't seem worth it. I'll get more than my money's worth at this festival. Your point is a good one, but it’s not fair to multiply the $15 by every artist (37) because you can’t be everywhere at once. You can really only see six or seven full sets a day.

To be fair, I haven’t seen anyone really plead for Iron and Wine. It seems most are interested in Calexico and Iron and Wine together (which can’t happen because they’ll be in Europe). Just like Better Oblivion, that’s an important distinction because it’s a buzzy folk act, playing songs that neither of them usually play on a regular solo tour, who will most likely only tour in 2019 and maybe 2020 and then after that will disappear again for who knows how long.
As for those upcoming artists, Newport always kills it in this regard. I would not be surprised that we don’t have a few of these already on our lineup: Nilufer, Lucy, and Charley.
That said, the lineup does seem to favor the long tail artists a little more this year than in year’s past. There seem to be a lot of artists on each day that I wouldn’t have thought would be more than one of the stage openers for that day. In some ways, this year’s lineup is more bimodal when it comes to artists. You have a lot of smaller artists ($10 to $15 for a ticket at a small club) and you have more (than in previous years) big hitters ($35+ tickets); but not much in the middle ($20-$30 ticket artists).

Yeah I was doing quick, rough math just to make a general point. I also gave the benefit of every act being $15 when we know that's not the case. So let's say 18-20 sets but range from $15-$50 depending on the artist. It's still a great deal.
Also, with astral projection you can see every set. It just takes practice
